IPS cams are known for being very high quality and for making power.  They do a lot of research to make sure they are not only a part that will make power, but also provide engine reliability.  Compare them to the Skunk2 cams which were known for timing chain slap in K Series motors.  A lot of "stage whateverthefuck" cams also put additional stress on the timing chain tensioner causing it to fail.  It wasn't so much that they were high lift cams with longer duration, but it had more to do with the opening and closing ramp profiles.  Unfortunately, IPS has closed it's doors to the public again.  These cams may be the last set ever made.  The IPS KSC '11 cams have a different profile on the low speed cam for better drivability when compared to the original design.  I also know that they are made of a lighter material.  With being out of business, I am unable to get any more info now that their website is down.

After talking to you the other day I searched these cams a little bit. It is a shame that they are no longer in business, from what I have read they look great. Very nice power increase compared to skunk 2 and another one I can't remember at the moment.

Here's a nice updated on the car.  A few weeks ago I got the motor back in and things were running fine when I first fired it up and let it run to purge the air from the cooling system.  Then I drove it to get gas and things were still okay.  The next morning, I went out to get breakfast and things went very very wrong.  One of the intake valves on cylinder 4 broke below the keeper and the valve dropped, causing a bunch of damage to the combustion chamber and piston.  So I pulled the motor and took the head off to find this:

Not a good sign that the valve spring was still de-compressing as I was taking the cams out.

You can see that the valve stem and keepers were still in the retainer when I pulled it off.

Here's the broken valve stem.  This was definitely the cause of the problem, but how bad is the damage?


When I pulled the supercharger off, I found more of the valve in my intake manifold.


Here's the extent of the damage to the head.  It's pretty much trash now.


Here's the damage done to the piston.



Now it's time to completely rebuild the motor.  My plans are in the OP.

I was pretty much expecting the damage when I pulled the spark plug and picked up something in the combustion chamber with a magnet.  At least it's a chance for me to upgrade and do a full build now.

Very true.  But at least I know that I can utilize the full 50º advance on my intake cam gear and know that I built the block properly.  I already picked up a k20a2 head.  It sucks not driving it, but I'm going to take it slow and set my goals to have it completed by next summer.

damn that sucks Tim, but like you said perfect time for a rebuild with a bunch of upgrades to it  Wink

now are you going to use aftermarket forged pistons and are you going higher on compression the same or lower?

The stock k24a2 internals are forged with a 10.5:1 compression ratio.  I'm going with aftermarket pistons.  I'm going to stick with the same compression ratio, or get as close to it as possible.  I can get CP pistons with a custom compression ratio, but they're $100 more for the set and take about 4-5 weeks.  I'm on the fence about going with off the shelf or custom.  I'll probably go with off the shelf though.

Sorry to hear bout the motor, but happy to hear about the rebuild. CP is a good choice! Also, I'm jealous about the cams aha. Some quality parts up in this build! IMO I'd pay the extra $100 for a custom set of pistons, guaranteed good quality control on them then. CP is a great company but you never know shit happens sometimes...like a valve dropping...freak failure anyways I'm deff following this build! Good stuff!
