So how bad is it really going to be for my car if I only replace one tire, as opposed to both?  I really can't afford to spend the money on a second tire..

I don't know the exact answer to that but I would think that it would depend how worn the other tire is.  If you run a brand new tire with one that is bald, the effects would be greater than if the new tire was paired up with a tire that still reads a six or seven.  So maybe someone more qualified can help you, what kind of shape is your other tire in?

the other tire is by no means bald.  there seems to be plenty of tread left on it to last for at the very least another year.

As long as it's not going to cause any kind of damage to the drive-ability of the car, I could care less really.  I hate my car (i have a civic not an accord anymore) and just want the thing to blow up or get totalled somehow so I can get rid of it.

It won't cause any damage unless its has a big varience in tread depth. Like for instant a brand new tire with 10/32nd of tread on the left front and 5/32nd on the right front may cause transmission slippage or wheel speed sensor fault. But if it only has a varience of only 3/32nd, it should be fine but you will have a tire pull to whatever side has the least amount of tread. Thats only if you are putting them on the front. If you they are going on the rear, it won't cause any damange at all.

I have the same problem with my new car. When we bought the car, it was out of alignment real bad. The front left wheel had wayyy too much toe out, so that tire is at about 4/32" vs. 8/32" on the other three tires. Obviously now that I've got it aligned (lifetime alignment ftw!) the car wants to pull to the right.

I'm just wondering how much tread will be left on the three good tires when the one tire goes bald...

The reason why you are getting for that much is because they are discontinued. They no longer make the 960AS Pole Position except in a Run Flat Size which is mainly the 205/55 R16, 225/40 R18, 255/35 R18. Its really for BMW. The 970AS Pole Position replaced the 960AS. Just hope you are getting the Japan made 960AS instead of the Mexico or USA made ones.

What's a good cheap tire nowadays that's quiet and gets good gas mileage? Not worried about a high performance tire anymore. Tires Plus recommended me some Firestone Affinity Touring tires, but the average review on Tirerack is a 5.3/10. They also have Bridgestone Ecopias, and they got 7.6/10. Everything else is goddamn expensive and is like $650+ after installation.
