I personally would prefer an Ivy Bridge processor and skip the overclocking.  Sandy Bridge is still a great processor, though.

Any particular reason you are going with a Vertex 3 instead of a Vertex 4?

If you're planning to do video editing, I would suggest getting more RAM.  What's the max your chosen motherboard will take?  RAM is fairly cheap nowadays.

Mostly price. I got the i7 2700k on sale, and the OCZ vertex 3 as well. My motherboard can take up to 32GB. There is definitely room for improvement in the parts list. This is my first build so I didn't want to go too overboard and accidentally break something...

So I should pickup some more RAM? H

Honestly, if it were me, if the motherboard can support 32GB, the machine would have 32GB.  Only thing that would prohibit it is cost, but RAM should be anywhere from $40 to $60 for 8GB depending on configuration (2x4GB, 1x8GB, etc.).

32 GB is definitely overkill.  12 or 16 GB should be more then enough seeing as it looks like this will mainly be a gaming rig anyway.

I missed the video editing part in his post, but my point remains.  Unless you do heavy video editing for a living, you'll probably never use 32GB of ram.  Plus he would have to use only 8GB sticks to hit 32GB total (assuming the motherboard only has 4 ram slots).  8GB sticks of good quality ram isn't cheap.  

I guess in the end it really just depends on his budget.

That's true, which is why I stated the only prohibiting factor is cost, or how much he wants to spend.

I was curious and looked up the mobo specs, which does have 4 slots.  I proceeded to check out 8GB in 8GBx1 config on Newegg, and saw that the range of prices was anywhere from $35 to $100, with a median around $40 to $50.  I would at least buy 16GB of RAM, in 8GBx1; this would leave you the option of adding more RAM if desired without having to replace old memory.  This could be done for about $100.  I just don't think 8GB is enough for any decent video editing these days, but maybe it is.

But I'm also the type of person that likes to max out my build.

So I have parts on the way for my HTPC build..  It's a bit overkill (OK, a lot overkill) for an HTPC, but I do plan to make it multipurpose.

The primary purpose will be for live TV and DVR capabilities; other purposes will include, but not be limited to: playing blu-ray movies, streaming, video encoding, and other media based duties.

Now to request for a tuning adapter and a CableCard from the cable company.

So my newly built HTPC doesn't POST.. ugh..

I think I've narrowed it down to either out of date firmware on the mobo, bad mobo, or bad processor..

Well, looks like I'm going to have the Apple fanboys here at work sold on getting some Android tablets (preferably the Nexus 10) for one of the classes. There's a pilot program we're going to run and see how it works out. I may even convince them to get me one so I can trade in this iPad I don't really use and let another fanboy use it. :fingers crossed:
