Maxima's have usually been top notch cars over the years. That VQ35 is a hell of an engine and has won many awards especially in that era. That's bout all I know about that car though.

my friend had an older gen maxima for a long time (late 90's) and it was always a good car to him.  I really dont think you can go wrong with a solid nissan.  plus, when buying an older car i tend to look at whats still out there on the roads.  its not exactly scientific but being that you still see a lot of older maximas still driving around speaks a lot to the model.

and yes, you can always check out consumer reports for the older vehicle lists of recommendations.  they have tons of info if there were any bugs of defects in specific models and what years they were fixed

One of my neighbors has had a 96 maxima since it was new, and she hasn't had many issues. She mentioned brakes, exhaust, and a driver side axle. That's no to bad for a 13 year old car.

General Discussion is for general discussion about our cars. I'm personally not a big Nissan fan but I see a lot of Maximas on the road so they must be reliable. Or at least a lot of people think so.

maximas are pretty decent cars. very easy to work on as well. the vq30de is pretty stout for the car.

Why is she looking at an older Nissan Maxima? I'm sure you've already tried to persuade her to get a civic/accord?

Honestly I havent had or know anyone personally whose had a good experience with a Nissan. Tell her to go to a bookstore and buy a Used Car guide and it'll tell you most everything you need to know. Expecially if that model yr has any major issues.

My sister isnt in the same finance bracket i am. Shes in the one that makes 0k per year. She just graduated from college and is looking for a job, but she needs a car to get back and forth. so my parents are getting together to buy her a car 3-4k range, something they didnt do for me when i graduated. I would tell her to get one of those books, but she wouldnt know what shes reading, i also dont think she would take the time to read it.
