The new contract signed Monday by Pats quarterback Tom Brady pays him $27 million total over the final three years. But he was paid $30 million as a bonus for applying his name to the dotted line at the bottom of the document.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Brady received a $30 million signing. He’ll also receive a base salary of $1 million this year and $2 million in 2014.

This device, given the three new contract years, results in a cap number of $13.8 million in 2013 — $8 million less than the cap number under his prior deal. Of that amount, $6.8 million comes from past contracts. Another $6 million comes from the initial proration of the new signing bonus.

Next year, the cap number increases to $14.8 million.

The cap numbers for 2015, 2016, and 2017 will be $13 million, $14 million, and $15 million, respectively. In each year, $6 million is attributed to the $30 million signing bonus.

Over the next two years, Brady will make $33 million. Which is $3 million more than the $30 million he was due to earn under the prior deal.

Less money, indeed.

So if he went to FA he wouldn't have made more that's where the money was given up. Could have hit the market and demanded 20 - 25 per year.

Well remember he still had a couple years left on his deal before he signed his extension, so he wouldn't have hit FA anytime soon. 

He was smart and got as much guaranteed money as possible from a team that loves to cut pricey vets in exchange for some salary cap relief.  Good deal for both sides.

He actually helped us out too by cutting the franchise tag price for QB down almost 1mil.  God forbid we have to use it....

I hope not. That's a deal that needs to get done. Honestly be cool to see Flacco take a little hometown discount to get some more talent on the field. More guys need to realize you can't win alone. Happens in all sports. Alexander Ovechkin is the prime example. Probably the most talented player since Mario Lemieux but wants the max contract so he plays on a losing team, and his stats decline due to the lack of  a supporting class.

I think he's a younger player that is similar. I don't think he is the upgrade but if they bring in an outside receiver it will help the offense. Honestly Welker was a problem for Brady. He forced the ball to him to much. They were at there best when the spread the ball around. Welker had two bad drops in the pats last two playoff games. Hell of a receiver but he's past his prime.
