if by tethering you mean using your iphone as a wifi hotspot, if you're on VZW, you will have to jail break it to enable that functionality without getting charged for it.
Edit: just read Mike's post.. that's a better idea

Like Brian said, jailbreak it and use any of the tethering apps you can find through Cydia. It works out better if you have the old unlimited data plan so as to not go over your data usage. The app I used to used was called MyWi.
I'm going to also like Mike's idea as well. Apple can suck my balls.

Pretty much. It does for iphone what Android has out of the box. On the Android subject, my new one is enroute to me as we speak.

just remember, if you jail break it and have to take it in because you broke it or dropped it somehow, do whatever you can to try and un-jailbreak it beforehand. otherwise, your warranty is voided, if they notice.
