That's not totally true. I took one of my clearly jail broken iPhone 4's into an Apple store that had a cracked screen and walked out within ten minutes with a brand new free iPhone 4. The broken iPhone had Barrel and Paralax running which completely change the way the screen moves.

How do you make sure you don't get charged for tethering with your cell phone? For instance, I have an unlimited data plan. But I think they'll notice if I've been using say 500mb a month versus 5 gb a month once I start using it as a hot spot.

if you're on ATT and iphone I have no idea.. but there may be an app that tracks your data usage.. VZW has one you can download that shows the data you've used in your billing cycle, but I don't know if there's one for other carriers..
basically you just can't be dumb with it and use it as a primary internet connection. and check your bill for extra charges..

I want it more for like when we go on vacation, so I can either use an iPad or my laptop with it. I've got cable internet at home w/ wifi.

you should be fine as long as you're not trying to stream movies and higher size files. I would just keep an eye on your data usage when you go on vacation make sure it doesn't get really heavy.

That's the beauty of jailbreaking. There's always a cracked version.
With the little bit of time I was able to mess with my new phone, I loaded Launcher Pro Plus and tried to root. Turns out, I just happen to have the version of Froyo that doesn't have a root available. I'll have to mess with it more when I get back from this patrol. With the little time I've had with it, I love it. Takes some getting used to but its pretty fucking sweet.
