Computer Help
«
on:
July 24, 2009, 08:32:19 PM »
I have a HP dv4 that is about 3 months old. It's not a monster, but it has plenty for me. My problem is when I wake it up to log in, it lags. I tried googling it, but none of the problems were the same as what I am having. I'll begin typing and nothing will appear. It seems like it can't keep up. It's not a big deal but it is really aggravating. Thanks for any help you all can give me.

I guess he has money to burn. I'd rather waste my money on parts that actually make my car faster, hookers, and drugs. Fucking amateurs. :

WOO something in my specialty!
I know this is annoying, but have you updated Windows at all? Is it XP or Vista? If you're on XP, make sure you're up to SP3. If you're on Vista, make sure you're up to SP2. I know that for Vista SP2, they did some fixing on when the computer comes out of standby.

That's because you don't give it time to load everything up, that's probably do to a slow startup. If you want faster startup you should clean out your registry, defragment your hdd, and clean up the startup items. I would suggest a program such as tuneup utilities or ace utilities. Also why do you put it to sleep instead of shutting it down? Is it because of a super slow startup? If so the beat bet for that would be doing the same that I stated above.

It is Windows Vista 64bit SP1. I didn't know that SP2 was out yet. I use Windows update regularly. I put it to sleep because I read somewhere that it is better to put vista computers to sleep than shut them down. Regardless, it is much faster to put it to sleep opposed to shutting it down and rebooting it.

Resume performance when Wi-Fi connection is no longer available after resume from sleep
See if that helps.

Matter of fact, I got the update for Vista 3 days ago. My computer is always going to sleep and I have noticed the boot time from sleep being quicker. Who knew?

I just got done talking to my Dad, who used to be an IT but is only proficient in XP, and he said not to get it. He said if I needed it Windows would push it. So what should I do?

Windows would push it? Well, if it does end up "pushing" it, you could always uninstall the service pack, I believe.
I installed SP2 on my stepdad's laptop, and noticed no decrease in performance.

Windows won't push it. Your updater would pop up saying there's an update available and you just click yes, same as any other update. Vista is a whole other animal than XP.

I think what he meant by pushing it is that it isn't showing up in windows update.

Dude vista is a ram killer! How much ram do you have. I upgraded the memory in my HP laptop, and it made a world of differance.

True Vista is a RAM killer, but when you have at least 2GB, it runs fine. Hell, I'm running Ultimate on 2GB right now and I'm using about 50% of my ram with 5 programs running.

Vista used to take up 1.5 gigs on idle out of my 4. Windows 7 now take up 500mb. Yes, I am running Windows 7
. I hate Vista soo much.
I still say, you should defragment and cleanout your registry and clean out your startup items.
