Tell me about it...i have no idea how people afford to live in a house...it's ridiculous
Depends where you live and down payment. My mortgage is less than 1050 a month. That includes taxes and insurance.

This. Trying buying in HI.
yeah, while not as bad as you guys have it, southern california is pretty bad too. it just sucks when i get all hyped up about looking at what's out there and looking at model homes only to realize the cost of my wish list. i know what i want, and i have come to realize in the past that it results in a very high number; and in a lot of cases, to a point where the monthly mortgage comes in higher than net salary.
it makes it harder because i'm picky, and i haven't really sat myself down to come up with a list of things that i could compromise on.
but i would love to get into a place without shared walls..

That's one of the benefits of living out here. The cost of housing is a lot lower than it was when I lived in MA.

MA / RI are very area dependent. Any where with easy access to the cities cost a fortune. Out laying areas are cheap. My house was under 160k

I live a ways out from the city (i.e. dowtown Honolulu / Waikiki) and definitely not beachfront property; somewhat small town and country-ish. Let's just say my house and property was over $500K... and it was built in 1946
. As Mark stated, and coming from a 2-Bedroom TH myself, a single-family dwelling >>>>>>>> Townhouse with shared wall, IMO
