Alright heres a quick question. What is required for the purchase of a gun?  I was in a store yesterday, and I'm looking for a new hobby I was think of a bow, but, was surprised that a gun is actually in the same price range. Is shooting at the range a good time? I'm just looking for a little stress relief, and something to spend some time doing that isn't work related.
Shooting at the range is definitely fun.  Sunday was definitely a fun and satisfying day for me.  It definitely took my mind off work, made me focus and concentrate on shooting.  Stress relief is definitely a benefit.

As for purchase requirements, that is dependent on your state.  State laws vary; i.e. in California, to purchase a handgun, you have to pass a test to obtain your Handgun Safety Certificate.  Once you get that, you can purchase a handgun from an FFL dealer.  When you purchase it, there is a 10 day waiting period, which includes a background check, prior to being able to take delivery.  This waiting period may be shorter or non-existent in other states.

It's best to check what your state laws are; you should be able to check your state's DOJ website for info.  They should state what the requirements are for purchasing from an FFL dealer, private party transfers, etc..

Which model? Full size, compact or sub compact? I believe the glock 17 is the full size .40. Don't quote me on that. Honestly, shoot some other guns before making a decision.

Actually it would be the glock 22(.40 cal), if you are referring to the full size.

Alec, What purpose do you want the gun for? If it is just something you are gonna throw in the nightstand as home defense and take it to the range once a month or so, I would certainly recommend the Glock 22. In fact, I am about to either pick one of them up or a Springfield XD as a duty weapon. The reliability of a Glock is unsurpassed. Also, if budget is an issue, A lot of places buy factory glock refurbished Glock 22's. Basically what they do, is they buy duty pistols back from police agencies and put a new spring in them and make sure everything is perfect and sell them to dealers. That in-turn gets you a reduced price(and they generally have night sights).

Now, If you are wanting something you can carry on your person, I would recommend the Springfield XD. It is a little bit smaller and has High capacity mags as well. The springfield is a little bit more slim, which makes it a little bit easier to conceal. The problem with Glock as a carry weapon is its size. Even when you buy a compact or subcompact they are still as wide. The width equates to bulk and bulk leads to people knowing you have something in your waistline(example) that doesnt need to be there.

One of the primary things is to make sure you get enough practice and learn how to use it.  Having it in the nightstand is one thing; knowing how to properly use it is another (hopefully not needing it for but in a defensive situation, especially).

I've never actually bought anything off gun broker but I frequently search through it. A friend of mine has bought a few things off of there and has not had any problems. There are a lot of good deals on there too.

The way it works is you purchase the firearm, then go to your ffl dealer and notify them and they will give you their price and info to give the seller. You give the seller the info and they will ship it to the dealer who will handle everything else
