Look into the environmental damage caused by producing the batteries.  The recycling thing is just so they don't fuck up the environment even more.  Here are a few articles that talk about the environmental damage caused by manufacturing the batteries in hybrids.

As you can tell, I am anti-hybrid and anti-electric because of the harmful effects of battery production.  It is grossly overlooked when compared to cars that burn fossil fuels.  I'd prefer to see alternative fuels used instead of electrics.
