1  K Series Performance / Stock Motors, Transmissions, & Maintenance / Cam lobe scuff/wear - How urgent to replace? on: April 03, 2014, 12:33:27 PM
So yesterday I was performing a valve lash adjustment.  That's when, I noticed this...

 Shocked

These 2 show the wear all of the intake lobes seem to have. Doesn't look too bad, but I'm not qualified to say.

These 3 are of the far left and far right cylinders' exhaust lobes. These look like they need replacement, but again, I'm qualified to say...

How bad is this?

Will it get worse over time?

Will this need immediate repair, or can it wait a while?

Other thoughts, opinions?

I believe this is related to a low oil pressure issue I had a few years back due to a clogged oil pickup. Enough to cause the VTC not to activate, sending the car into limp mode. I had the dealership clean out the oil pump pickup and VTC strainers for free because this occurred within days of an oil change they did *AND* their man only put in 2 quarts of oil. It's worked fine ever since, no oil pressure issues. I've also started doing my oil change and switched to M1 full synthetic and switched over to a ~4000-4500 mile interval.

Performed a valve lash adjustment (last night actually). It wasn't too bad after having watched a few videos and read a few guides. But what they don't tell you, is that reaching the exhaust valves is very awkward. Enough so that my lower back and hamstrings are sore today. Also, for the exhaust valves, if you have the 3-point STB it's easier to use a 10mm wrench and screwdriver combo than to use a jam-nut tool. Or you could just remove STB, but I wasn't up for all that.

Found some scuffing of varying degrees on several cam lobes will post in another thread...

I just sent $24. Hopefully that is still enough to cover 2 months operating fees....

...and enough to partly make up for 7 years of lurking/benefiting from the knowledge posted by others.
