i installed a TSX IM few months ago. and a code p0171 popped up. so i erased it. (it never came back) but that didnt reset my ecu? did it. i just installed synthetic oil yesterday so i want to reset my ecu to adjust and re learn everything. can i do this with any computer. or does it have to be the honda computer thing. i dont kno the proper name

Most code readers will reset the ECU when they erase codes, another option is to remove one of your battery cables for 15-30mins.

would it say on the code reader that the ecu has been reset or would it show some kind of sign that it did reset?

The only sign that it will show of it being reset is no trouble codes and possibly a few other things. The biggie that I can think of is codes. Other than that, I don't know.

The way you would know it the reader did a full reset is to look at your LT fuel trims under the data, if they are zeroed out then the ECU was fully reset.

Resetting the ECU is most likely different than clearing the codes.  Clearing the codes just erases the freeze frame data that is stored whenever the car codes.  Paul is 100% correct.  The fuel trim values will be zeroed when the computer is truly reset.  All essential learned parameters like fuel trim and crank pattern are cleared when the ECU is reset.  To reset the ECU, disconnect both terminals of the battery for 10 minutes.  Reconnect the terminals and start the vehicle with all electrical loads off.  Let the vehicle idle for 10 minutes (2 cooling fan cycles) untouched.  The vehicle's ECU is now reset and will begin to re-learn essential operating parameters.

Ironically enough, i just reset my ECU doing terminal-unhook method. Can't back it up with evidence, but I'm pretty sure that worked, lol. Maybe it's just me being crazy, but I have noticed my intake whistle a little more at around 2,000-2,500RPM when I'm not actually flooring it. :P
