Well, you know all this world is anymore is a quest for more money. It really sickens me the lengths people will go for money. The cityof Chattanooga, last month, decided that they were going to charge officers who live in the city limits 20¢ a mile and those who live in the county 30¢ a mile for their take home cars. Which is bullshit. Our chief told the mayor that if it is going to happen make the fee equal across the board, and to not divide his department. Well the mayor has one upped it this time, the mayor has now decided that the 'savings' from the people outside of the city parking their cars will pay for every one who lives in the city to take their cars home for free. Which means if you live outside the city limits, you will be paying 0.30$ a mile for something others get free. Now, while all of this transpire, a police union pointed out that Tue mayors friends were recipients of a $400/mo stipend for driving their personal vehicles but they were like a city court judge, and a human resources director and a few others. Since they did that, the mayor did away with the stipend but gave all of them a 4800$ a year raise. Now I haven't seen the 3% cost of living raise since I started yet its part of my employment contract. They haven't given anyone a raise on the lower levels in about ten years. Yet these people, who all make over 100k a year need a 4800 a year raise because they don't get a city funded vehicle? Corruption at its finest folks. Sorry for the rant, but people gouging money and my employer on the news lying set me off...

No problem. In my opinion, the people who get "take home vehicles" should be charged to take their cars home, if they basically just get a car to get to the office and go back home.  If they use their vehicle for official use, then no, don't charge them.

Or they could just drive to work and then hop into the official vehicle.

Well you see with police vehicles, you are technically on duty any time you are in your vehicle. So if you're on your way in and they tone a bank hold up a block away from you, you have to go, or if you roll up on a wreck you can assist until the officer who's district it is gets on scene etc. Your police car is your office. And like the investigators they get called out at all hours so they need their vehicles as well.

Yeah, that's the same deal with my brother, he's a state trooper in KY.  I did a ride along with him once.  Pretty cool.  His car was literally his office with a printer and everything.
