Title: Performance bulbs, (off road only)
Post by: 06RockHead on April 08, 2014, 11:23:32 PM
So I was wondering what the worst is these would do to my car. I'm looking at the Hella HB3 / 9005 100w bulbs. I'm aware of possibly melting reflectors. I'm
More interested in possible effects to the wiring harness. As 65w is supposed to be max. http://www.myhellalights.com/index.php/default/bulbs/high-performance-xenon-blue-bulbs/ (http://www.myhellalights.com/index.php/default/bulbs/high-performance-xenon-blue-bulbs/)

Go for it.  If you're worried about damaging your factory wiring, then you will probably want to pick up a relay harness for the bulbs.  That way, you won't damage your stock wiring and the relay harness will be able to handle the additional current draw from those bulbs.

Tim where would I find a harness like that, I don't think I've ever seen one in my adventures of the interwebs. And wouldn't "theoretically" a fuse blow before any damage occurred? I mean it's a 6 amp increase between the two bulbs. 2.91 per side.

I think he's talking about an HID relay harness. I don't like the off the shelf ones as there's only one relay and it feeds from one side so if something were to happen to the fuse for that side, you lose both lights.

If it goes out just unplug the harness and directly plug it into the oem harness temporary. I have back up relay cubes in the car :)
