Title: Everyone, Meet Scoot!
Post by: timot_one on March 10, 2014, 09:17:40 AM
Hey everyone.  I recently had the opportunity to be come the care taker of a 1979 1200 Civic, Scoot.  Originally I was told Scoot was a CVCC, but found out that it's a 1200 Civic.  A buddy of mine got it a while back.  Unfortunately, my friend passed away a few years ago and his wife had been keeping the car in storage since then.  She decided it needed to go to a good home because she couldn't take on another project.  I picked up Scoot yesterday and brought it home.

My plan is to fix the sheet metal, undo any hack jobs that had been done in the past and take care of anything mechanical.  It may get a swap down the road, but I just want it to be a reliable driver when the weather is nice.

Wow! Scoot is in good shape! I had no idea that was also in the garage with the other car.

Historical vehicle...is that the same as an antique plate out here?

That won't happen. It will be restored and left alone, unless I do a k swap in it.

The stickers will probably be removed. I never liked the shocker sticker. It's just not my style.

The historical plate is like an antique plate. That was on the car when I got it. I'm going to be sending it back actually. I registered Scoot today, but didn't get historical plates because I would be limited with how much I could drive. Vehicles with historical plates can only be driven to and from shows/events, not for pleasure.

Where's the fun in that? ^^lol

That's why it has regular plates on it now. I got it registered and insured this morning. I just need to get a new battery for it and Scoot will be road worthy.

Was the registration like 20 bucks? :)

Title and registration was a little more than $20.

It only has 50k on it.

I'm very fortunate to have found such a solid car.

I'm surprised with how clean it looks inside.  Someone kept real good care of her.

Yup. It's a great start. I'm trying to source all the parts so I can replace the brakes on all 4 corners. I noticed there was brake fluid leaking from the left rear wheel yesterday. No bueno.

Scoot looks nice am sure it will be a gas saver once completed

They say the 1200 Civic got 50 mpg. Probably because it weighs nothing.

Anyway. The brakes were mushy and non-existent, and I found a leak on the left rear drum. Most likely it's a bad wheel cylinder because I couldn't bleed that corner. So, I got all new parts to replace the brakes and wheel bearings and to rebuild the calipers. Scoot will be stopping on a dime soon enough.

Screw that. I'd keep it as stock as I possibly could.

It's loads of fun. It's just what I would do.

Stock is boring. This thing is screaming for a k24 swap.

For now, it's going to stay the way it is. I've considered k swapping it, but not right now.

holy crap, nice little project there! Do my eyes deceive me or is that an auto? '79? I know in TX there is a difference between antique and classic plates. Antique being show only and classic meaning you can drive it whenever (albeit with a higher registration cost). Is there no such difference in MA?

I've always wanted a cool old car to fix up and drive around for fun. Still kicking myself for passing on a sweet old Honda s600 for dirt cheap...but I had no money, no place to put it, and it didn't run...

Sam, I actually live in Ohio now. They have historical plates here, bit nothing else. Since I wanted to drive it, I picked regular plates.

Ryan, that's the car Roger built. I've been following the build for the past few years. He actually sold it to someone in Norway and bought a '78 Accord to build.

I would love to do a swap, but it's a LOT of work and custom fabrication. I'm torn between restoring it and doing a swap and leaving the exterior as it is.

I was just fooling.  I say just restore it and have a cool daily.

Finally, somebody who I agree with on this! Thanks Ryan!

I was actually going to do a sympathetic restoration and keep the original paint and "character".

Wow! That's a clean Civic. It looks like they flared the wheel wells a little bit. Funny how it has an RS badge on it, but doesn't have the RS mirrors.

Thanks Nelson. That's the Civic that Roger built. I've talked to him before. I'm not surprised that it's up for sale again. I know the full story with the car.
