Title: If I were to Vinyl wrap my car what color should i go for
Post by: Iceburgers on February 26, 2013, 12:03:45 PM

I wouldn't do it because your paying a lot of money for something that isn't even permanent.  Now a show car or a garage queen I could understand, but not a DD.

Now if she was offering to wrap your car for just the cost of the materials since she is a friend, I would consider that.

Isn't your car white?  I think it's the best color on an Accord.  I'd leave it.

Matte "red dirt" brown.  No need to ever wash your car.  Ever.

I'm def down with the black roof... not sure about the whole car...

Z edit-Quit hashtagging fucker. Just hit the report button so we can fix it.

I already have the roof wrapped in black, was thinking about doing the whole car now. The front bumper and lip have a bunch of scratches from bugs and rocks so i figured i would just wrap the whole thing.

#sorryaboutthat #noslappingnecessary

Title: Re:

Hahaha #loveit

Yeah I really like the way black roofs pop.  I'd wrap mine if it wasn't black already... :P

Post by: Rich01 on November 15, 2013, 07:53:50 PM
I say wrap it, I'm not a fan of the matte red tho. I would do a gloss red (1080-G83 or G203). Plus side of wrapping IMO is you can easily replace it in sections i.e. lip, bumper, hood, if you get chips or scratches versus repainting. We all know Honda's paint is temporary ;)

Title: Re: If I were to Vinyl wrap my car what color should i go for
Post by: CrackerTeg on November 15, 2013, 08:49:03 PM
The other plus with wrapping is it doesn't "chip" like paint does. It'll tear but like you said, easily replaced.

Exactly. ^

Gloss red huh? Got me thinking there.... I'm gonna try something tomorrow

What does wrapping the car cost

Exactly what I was wondering.

I've thought about wrapping mine since my paint looks like shit. I'd do gloss white and keep my roof black

Title: Re: If I were to Vinyl wrap my car what color should i go for
Post by: olecram39 on November 16, 2013, 12:40:52 AM
It can run you anywhere from around 2 to 4 grand depending on the kind of material, car etc. Almost like a paint job. But this what i do when Im not in school, so for me it would just the cost of materials.

If any of you guys makes it down to Miami or Gainesville one day, I'll wrap your car if you get the beer :)

A wrap won't fix scratches or smooth out dead bugs.

Title: Re: If I were to Vinyl wrap my car what color should i go for
Post by: olecram39 on November 16, 2013, 01:36:43 PM
Tim is right, it wont. If the paint has any relief the vinyl will also take the shape of it. However, it will make things significantly less noticeable.

This is my rear driver door. See the three big scratches?

Same scratches covered with vinyl.
(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1840_zps0c7890cc.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1840_zps0c7890cc.jpg.html)

This is the biggest one.
(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1845_zps895bb81f.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1845_zps895bb81f.jpg.html)

This is the front lip.
(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1863_zpseb86f86c.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1863_zpseb86f86c.jpg.html)
(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1864_zps9335e186.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1864_zps9335e186.jpg.html)

After the wrap.
(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1866_zps12962de5.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1866_zps12962de5.jpg.html)

(http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s576/olecram93/IMAG1862_zpscd8d7ef3.jpg) (http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/olecram93/media/IMAG1862_zpscd8d7ef3.jpg.html)

If you look closely at it in person (couldnt capture it in the pictures) you can see the craters in the paint through the vinyl, but it still covers a lot of the color differences and such. For something like this it is recommended to sand those imperfections and smooth out the paint as much as possible.

Buggy mirror.(i need to wash the car i know) And this is obviously not how you do it, the car needs to be washed, clayed, buffed and cleaned with alcohol before the vinyl is applied. I did this for informational purposes only.

After i removed the vinyl.

Wow wow wow wow wow! !!! Pump your brakes there buddy.  That's what I'm going to be doing for next season, I was using that exact same car as an example too lol. Stop copying me j/k. Just don't go with the orange accents like this guy eventually did.

Z the part# is 1080-G120, gloss white aluminum is what we were talking about last night.

Gloss white aluminum. I knew it was some odd name that sort of, in a round about way meant silver.

Its not 3m. I took a gamble on a material called VVIVID, i read online that it was pretty good and wayyyy cheaper so i went with it. To my suprise it was VERY good. Air release is great, and the adhesive is very strong so overall im very happy. Im still not done, only have the bumpers left, one side skirt and the trunk.

I'm sticking with silver. I like the color but hate the rock chips.

I did notice something on vvivid's site regarding the adhesive. It says its solvent-based which may pose a problem for the paint underneath.

Title: Re:
Post by: olecram39 on December 23, 2013, 12:00:57 AM
As long as the chips are not extremely deep, it will cover it.  What does being solvent based translate to?

You are supposed to remove everything if you wanna do it right.

Title: Re: If I were to Vinyl wrap my car what color should i go for
Post by: CrackerTeg on December 23, 2013, 07:09:06 AM
I'm not entirely sure what it means. If its what I think it is, the solvent could ruin the paint underneath. As for the chips, not really that deep. I've hit most of the scratches and chips with touch up, a little sanding and clear. Everything is smooth but you can still see the repair. It bothers the hell out of me.

VVivid is still a budget alternative, though it is good, 3M is always better. If going with 3M wont kill your pocket you should.

When you did yours, apart from what's in the pics, what did you remove and or separate?

i ordered carbon fiber vinyl wrap to wrap my roof and trunk to avoid paying hundreds to fix paint delamination.

I chose carbon fiber because i wanted it to match my carbon fiber hood   :)

Same thing i have going on; check out my profile. I started with carbon fiber but decided to go a different route. I will be sanding off all the damaged areas before wrapping. May also use 3m primer in those areas also.

I removed the door moldings, trunk lid spoiler, roof molding (thing that goes from the rear windshield all the way to the bottom of the front one), I didnt do this, bu i recommend removing the hood so you can work the edges more comfortably.

If you sand it down very well and get rid of the flaking clear coat you wont have to use primer in those areas. Make sure you get rid of all the weak clear coat or else the vinyl will left it up for sure.  Where you should use primer is anywhere you have a less than 90 degree angle, for example the lower corner of the headlights, where the lip meets the bumper, where the rear bumper meets the trunk, and any other place where you had to stretch the material quite a bit.

I too work in the industry and will eventually be doing Matte white. All we use at our shop is 3m so will be getting gloss white and putting matte laminate on it. The laminate makes the life expectancy of the vinyl increase by a couple years at least... The sun out here will eat it up within a couple years w/o lam...

Ok cool, when I did the carbon fiber I stuffed it behind that rubber molding on the roof the same way I did around the rubber for the windshield and back glass. I don't have any door moldings so that should save some time. Hood maybe staying carbon fiber if all goes as planned. I do have a pint of primer and edge sealer for all those tricky areas. Thanks for your insight bud. Also, from what i've done on the RDX, the 1080 is a lot easier to work with than the Di-noc because it's thinner.

Here is a little photo shoot of my accord and another forum member's accord. It took me 4 days to do the blue one, the material is 3m 1080 and the color is called indigo.

How do you think it would be for an ameteur to do their own wrap?  Obviously it takes a lot of time removing body pieces and smoothing out each body panel, but would you say it is harder than tinting a couple cars worth of windows?

Way harder than tinting. Not something I recommend an amateur to do, simply because the material is expensive and making mistakes can cost a lot of money, you gotta know how to work the heat and curves.

Damn, thats what I thought.  P.S.  That matte gun metal color is pretty spiffy.

i'd vote for something super unique and probably never been done by an Accord owner:

the Vinyl would probably cost more than some paint jobs
