Title: How To: Shift boot on A/T
Post by: MyNameIsThien on February 06, 2009, 09:51:30 PM
Okay let me start this these first pics are on how to remove it, and how much he cut of the shifter

after removing the trim and oem shift knob, you should see the metal rod.
if you are trying to shorten the shifter itself, you will need to cut it with a pipe cutter or my method was w/ a dremel. Using the dremel was so much easier than the pipe cutter, the only thing is you want to make sure not to cut the rod that is in the inside of the pipe. ....if that makes any sense.
Instead of cutting it below the first hole like most ppl did, i cut right above the first hole. this way i can switch back to stock if needed and without having the issue of redrilling another whole to prevent the oem knob from spinning.

04-You can remove these two pieces: the white plastic and the slanted metal from the shifter. they're are not really needed when using an aftermarket knob.

05-In my case, i decided to keep the white plastic on there...even though it really has no use. Oh and you may also need to cut the inside rod in order for your shift knob to secure onto the outer rod. I didnt have to since my shift knob was able to secure onto the outer rod

06-For the boot, as mentioned earlier, you will need to trim the plastic base of the boot on the bottom left corner and the bottom.....please refer to pics posted earlier in the thread. you probably want to just trim it in a straight line rather than curving like i did.

07-I also trimmed on the top of the plastic base as well, since the boot gets pinched between the plastic trim and the shift knob when putting it in Park.

08-Pic of the boot installed

10-Place the base of the aftermarket shift knob.

11-Place the knob itself and tighten the screws onto the rod and screw the base onto the knob. ....giving you the final product.

It still sits a lil high because i didnt cut the inner rod, which i am probably going to do later.
also I'm probably going to end up tucking the boot between the base and the knob, other than that i'm content w/the current setup.

with that knob you wouldn't need to press down on anything right?

That is the Momo Automatic Shift knob. It has a button on top to push down to put it in gear.

This is an interesting mod I need to get around to ordering the parts to do it.  MOMO charges too much for that fuckin' knob.

i always wanted to do this but ended up just cutting it up and putting the OEM shifter back in place. looks stocky.

Kind of off topic, but not really. Will the 06-07 shift knob, automatic, fit on the 03-05?

Title: Re: How To: Shift boot on A/T

HELP ME !!!!   HELP ME !!!!

ok so heres the issue.... i did all the trimming that was nessesary to get it all to work and function great.... looks awesome too

so... i pushed the oem automatic shifter downward to get it to line up with the 2 screw holes..... once all screwed in and while driving the shifter will push from R....N.....D...3....2 where as before i ever touched this project it would only shift from N.....D....D3 while driving

so now i can all of a sudden shift up to R and down to 2 without applying the brake and just pushing the shifter, during regular driving..... god forbid anything ever hit my shifter and i went into reverse on the highway at 65+ mph

also.... another problem

i guess i can live with the shifting up to R and down to 2 thing.... but now when i put it in P i cannot get the keys out of the ignition
i can see the white plastic mechanism which controls the brake release and key release functions.... but when i put it in P the key release function will not fully turn over...thus not releasing my key
this is due to the inner shifter rod being too far down, thus not allowing for the key release and park mechanisms to fully push down

i know this is confusing... but please help hahaha this shit sucks and for some reason 4 years of college and a degree wasnt enough schooling to allow me to figure this one out
did i mess up a spring or something ?
somehow could i have messed up the whole shifting mechanism... it seemed so simple... unscrew the shifter... install boot.... put back on the knob and screw it in.... somewhere in between everything went wrong

Title: Re: How To: Shift boot on A/T
Post by: MyNameIsThien on March 08, 2009, 02:07:38 PM
The shifter is positioned to far down. Try raising the shifter up and reposition it higher. That will solve your problem.

Title: Re: How To: Shift boot on A/T
Post by: NWINNIE34 on March 08, 2009, 03:06:52 PM
how is that possible?

i am pushing the shifter down so that the holes match up with the holes on the shifter rod.... that was i can screw back in the oem shifter
i didnt change any of the heights so i dont know why all of a sudden its too low

im gonna go play with it now.... i'll let you know what happens
shouldnt be this complicated

Title: Re: How To: Shift boot on A/T
Post by: NWINNIE34 on March 08, 2009, 03:24:55 PM
haha... so here im am 15 minutes later..... everything works perfect, shifting is back to normal, and now my key releases

i have no idea why it wasnt before.... but now it does haha who know...

thanks anyways, looks nice !

Did you reuse the oem knob? or did you go with an aftermarket knob?

Title: Re: How To: Shift boot on A/T
Post by: NWINNIE34 on March 18, 2009, 08:39:12 AM
re used the oem knob... not sure what the problem was before.... im thinking it had to be with trimming the plastic on the front of the boot
i tried it literally 20 times and ran into a ton of issues.... trimmed that piece and my next try was successful

saw a few sweet aftermarket knobs out there.... just make sure if you get one it matches with the diameter of the stick you have.

^ lol i used an 06 exl auto knob. and i pinched the boot between the two pieces of the knob. zipties and dremel FTW. Ill post pics up as soon as im back home again to take some

post some pics of your setup, i still have my oem knob in a box. I might switch it up lol

I took the little white piece off that was at the top of the boot... this piece made no sense when trying to hook everything back up
so for now i just tucked the top of the boot down into itself and it looks fine.... will never come undone unless someone really messes with it

Very nice, and you didnt cut anything? Mine looks way higher......i want to do a joedanger mod eventually....

Ever thought of installing black carpet into your baby? it would look killer. Someone did it on v6p, they installed a black top part of the dash and black carpet and.......pure sex.

nice... how did you get the top of the boot to secure to the shift knob?
mine isnt securely attached it just sorta sits in there... and it looks like i have alot more slack on mine compared to yours
it looks fine for now... maybe i'll mess with it a little more once its warmer

Heres what i did. Maybe it will help you get that cleaner look.

1. Removed the knob
2. I pulled up the trim piece
3. turned the boot inside out and removed the white trim piece from the boot.
4. Squeezed the boot "neck" in-between the two pieces of the knob. Also used zipties. but not necessary
5. re-installed the knob with the boot inside out and the trim piece in the air lol.
6. (only if you have heated seats) Reconnected the switches
7. since the knob is back on and the boot is inside out. It should look like a funnel. So just bring the trim down and secure.

They may not line up with the mounting points but you should be able to get what you have to work.

Drill New Holes To Mount Em Eh?

If that works yeah but what you really need to do is secure the boot so when you shift to park or D1 the material won’t come out the shifter frame.

Sweet, thanks. I'm going to see if my local dealer has any at all / has a decent price.

Do you happen to know what size screw that is? My grandfather has a warehouse full of machine supplies, so I'm sure he'd have the right screw, lol.

The automatic comes with two but I would order some any old ways because you just never know.  For that price it should not even be an issue.

Trust me…

Oh, I hacked off the plastic ring on top of the OEM boot so I could fit the boot snugly to the OEM shift knob; Just FYI.

Phew, I finally got this project done. I had to trim some of the boot base at the bottom where 1st gear was, because the shifter wouldn't stay. As far as securing the top of the boot, I don't think I did it right, lol. I used a zip tie, but I couldn't pull up the boot far enough to where it'd hide the two screws. I only got it up enough to where it'd hide the bottom screw. Either way, it's functional, and it looks pretty sweet.

I love to do this but retain the plastic around the shift knob. So basically, not a full shift boot, only the center would have it. With that knob, it'd be tough. I thought you wouldn't have to press anything which wouldn't have worked for me since I like pretending I have a manual and fake shifting =P

The boot is an OEM part. You can get them off any 7th Gen Accord with an MT.

Part Number # 83415-SDN-A91ZA

Or you can go with the Momo ones which are universal. They just wrap around the base of the shifter assymbly.

I know this thread is a little old, but finally got around to installing the boot. I was just wondering if anyone with the momo auto shift knob had any problems with the screws that hold the knob in place coming loose. I had a cheap shift knob that always came loose which was really a pita, which is why i would spend the money to buy the momo knob.

So I started doing this tonight! I ran into a few snags, .. didn't know I had to remove the 2 screws to get the OEM shifter off. Me dumb. My cutting attachment for my Dremel also broke, so I had to run to Home Depot to get some reinforced metal attachments. I still have some more cutting to do on the bottom of the boot where the white plastic is, it's not quite flush, but I have a more pressing question. How does the shifter knob stay on? I put the base on, and the top half has 3 little screws, as mentioned, but the shifter also came with 5 rubber inserts. I've been looking around online and some people have said to cut a hole in one of them and put it in the knob. I'm stuck on the last step! I'm still looking around online but I wasn't sure if anyone knew what the next step was. I'm using the MOMO Automatico knob....

What I did was take the white ring off the end, fold it inward, and tie a ziptie really tight. Works pretty well, and has yet to slip off.
