I thinnk its a great start. The shell is perfect it's the quality of the members that will make this go far. We need more DIY's and part's list etc. But, this stuff will come.

Thanks Mike.  We definitely need to start working on posting basic information in stickies.  I'm working on a wiring guide (go figure) for our cars right now.  Look for it in the electrical forum.

Would it be difficult to add a "Post Since Last Visit" button.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 04, 2009, 03:58:24 PM
There is a "view new posts" link at the top right of the page just below the current date and time and a "view active topics" link on the left side of the page below the last visit date and time. ;)

Like I mentioned in the other thread, maybe we should setup some rules in regards to creating threads that already exist. Also, setup a number of posting limit before you can put something up for sale.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: MyNameIsThien on February 05, 2009, 01:33:19 AM
We already have a for sale limit. You must have at least 50 post before you can post an ad for sale. Keep the suggestion coming.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

cool. i didn't know that ...learned something new today :)

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 05, 2009, 08:46:40 AM
It's set up that you cannot post in FS threads unless you have a certain number of posts.  This is to deter people from signing up just to sell their junk because they have either sold their car, are selling their car, or just parting things out because they're done modding.  I do not want to promote that sort of thing, so people that try to join for those reasons are not welcome.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: lilmalu on February 05, 2009, 09:03:18 AM
Cool. How about a small chatbox at the bottom of the page? So that members who are online can chat about whatevers on their mind.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 05, 2009, 12:03:44 PM
It's not a bad idea, but it probably wouldn't get used that much.  In all honesty, most people have AIM, Yahoo Messenger, or some sort of chat application and that's how I shoot the shit with most memebers on the forum.  For the guys that I know fairly well, they have my phone # and text me during the day.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: lilmalu on February 05, 2009, 12:27:57 PM
True. I only suggested since over here in Toronto, the local site has a chat box and is used by the members only.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 05, 2009, 12:44:32 PM
It's not a bad idea.  I just don't know if it's a feature that would get used much since our member base is still fairly small.  I also don't know how to make that modification to the site yet.  Mark (alpha) is really the guy that does all the site set up and stuff since he's more knowledgable about it.  If it's a simple mod, we can add it and see how popular it is.  For now, I'm going to stick to AIM until we research it more.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: lilmalu on February 05, 2009, 02:49:30 PM
cool. If anything, ill get some info from the site that has the chat box and get all the source code if needed.

Dont know if its already there but how about a spell check for posting. Sometimes I type fast and end up look like a clown!

Uhhhh.  You and I talked about it when I set that up Jason.  Anyway, for the guys that I know personally, you don't have the restrictions.  Just ask me to change your user settings and you're all set.

I've never seen this red line.

It depends on your browser.  When I use IE at work, it doesn't do the red underlined spell check.  When I use FireFox at home, it does the spell check.  I'll see if we can get some sort of spell check feature.  If not, I'll mail you a dictionary Mike.

Is there anyway to remove the inactive users? I looked at the member list for no reason what so ever, and there are alot of people that becames members months ago, and have 0 posts.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 11, 2009, 12:22:34 PM
Yeah, I can remove inactive members.  I'd rather not right away.  Considering the current state of g7a, I am guessing that other people may start posting here some.  I'm hesitant to remove people that I know personally from other forums.  I will probably wait until someone has been here a year without posting before removing them.  I think that will be the bench mark for now.

Not in their defense, but I became a member months ago and never posted here, however I have been on here several times to lurk in the shadows and read stuff.  Now that G7A blows a fat dick I decided to post here.

To clear that up, this site was dormant for a while because of inactivity.  We created it last year, but it never really took off and things were getting a little "better" over on g7a so I put my efforts back into making g7a better.  We were all fairly inactive over here, so new accounts weren't noticed.  Sometimes I don't get the e-mail that new members have registered.  The change over on g7a has made me want to put more effort into this forum.  I really do hope to help continue the community that started over on g7a.  Again, if anyone has any suggestions on how to make the site better, please post your suggestions in here.

I have created a Regional forum in the Lounge category also.

No specific ideas, but lets all do everything we can to get this place going.  Thien has obviously already put a lot of time into restoring the DIY's.  If anyone else has access to the archive, would could bring everything back.

I was actually wondering the same thing that was mentioned in the first page of this thread about the for sale section. Does that rule apply if you want to buy? As it stands by this current post, I'm only at 11. If it doesn't apply, no biggie. I don't have anything to sell.

Yet.

Here's what I have done.  They guys that I know from the other forum, I have changed your permissions so you can create a new thread in the for sale forum.  Anyone that's a registered member can post in an existing thread though.

Cool man. Works for me.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: b_beau_09 on February 15, 2009, 03:44:29 AM
i know this is all still semi-young, but i'm gonna start promoting in my area for elitecm.net for sure..  and since i was going to get a g7a sticker before it went to hell, i may start designing one for elitecm.. i think if we all started promoting to our seperate CM's we'll easily get some good members over here.  so with that being said, i think advertising for elitecm.net is the best thing we can do.. once old g7a members see that the format is generally the same, they will come in flocks. haha.

and tim, i think i'm speaking for everyone in saying that if you need any help here with keeping the site up and running, or maintenance, just speak up.  we're here for the community.

maybe we can contact 'glily' to distribute decals for this forum? since hes already distributing them for G7A.

I appreciate the offer man.  I definitely want to get some decals made soon, but I want a design first.  I posted a thread for decal design submissions.  I will contact glily about getting decals made for us.  If that doesn't pan out, I'll go to the guy I went to last time.

I'm liking what brian said about promoting in our respective areas. Good thing I never got a g7a sticker.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Mike on February 16, 2009, 08:23:38 AM
I don't think we need to do as much promotion as you guys are thinking. I'm pretty sure that the consensus here is that we are after a forum with quality content not a high member count. I'd rather have 50 good members than 100000 dopes any day.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: b_beau_09 on February 16, 2009, 11:39:52 AM
i fully agree with you, mike, as far as quality over quantity.  i was just saying we should promote within our respective squads.  get the people we know over here so that we can maintain our squad information in one place instead of two or three different forums. the less confusion the better.

Ooh ooh, I have a suggestion!  I think that on the entrance page, we should put a short summary of the site so that when you see the site listed on a search engine such as google, it will have the site description. As of right now it reads like this on google;
Results for: elitecm

EliteCM.net
EliteCM.net. Enter Here. contact: admin@elitecm.net.
elitecm.net/ - 6k - Cached - Similar pages

That's all it says.  Also for the same page, I think that for a cool thing to do (although it may require more work for the admins), we should elect a new accord picture as a splash screen monthly or bi-monthly.  Whenever you guys feel is better.   Just a few ideas I've had.  And yes, tim thanks for mentioning me on your first post. *headslap*

I agree Brian.  I know we need to refine the site some more.  Between Mark and I, we will be doing some of this stuff.  As of now, we are both extremely busy with personal stuff.  As time goes on, we will be knocking out the list of things that need to be done to make ecm a better place.  I think you have some pretty good suggestions though.

So it seems there might be a small exodus from the new G7A coming over here?

My suggestion, do not make this board like the new G7A ever, it is the most difficult forum to work with I have seen.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: CrackerTeg on February 20, 2009, 07:26:43 AM
I don't think that'll ever happen man. This board is going to stay the way it is and as far as the exodus goes, the movement is happening and they're coming in droves!

True man.  There are a lot of people coming over from g7a because of the new format.  You guys have the right to beat my ass if I pull the same shit Art did.  We are going to keep this format.

I know this is a fairly new site, but once we get everything looking spic and span (ie: header, entrance page), we should update the meta tags and search engine submission.

Also, Tim...you may want to set your nameservers to private. At the moment, anyone can get your name, addy, phone, email via the whois.net (its public information if you don't set it to private). Also, looking at your info on whois, looks like this site is hosted by 1and1, i use them as well and i know they provide the "private" setting for free. Just go to your domains and you can set as private.

I'll offer any help that I can, but for the time being I'm super busy with school and also trying to set-up my cycling team's webpage. Shoot me a pm or email if you have any questions though.

+1 on the meta tags.  However, you don't think that would attract noobs?

On that note, I think we should have the same activation process as the original G7A.  It keeps out spam (for the most part, except for the guest forum), and it keeps lazy noobs and their "do these fit" posts out.  However, I think meta tags are important too.

Also, I understand that Tim is very busy so if anyone else could jump on the ball and start designing us a  better  banner, that would be sweet.  No offense to the maker.

Well, that's something that every forum will have.  We all have to start learning somewhere.

We do have an activation process.

Anyway, I know there is a lot of tweaking to do.  Eventually, we will have more features and a sexier look.  My main focus will always be improving the content found in the site.

All good suggestions guys.  Now that I am finished with my class and got my MECP license, I will have a little more free time to dedicate to the site.  As soon as I get back from FL, I'll start working on more stuff.

Tim, on FLAccords we have a donation bar that show's a monthly goal and the current donation level. Is there anyway to incorporate that on here? Either way shoot me the ECM paypal adyy later so I can send some loot.

thats a good idea. i would give my share aswell just so it wont happen same as gen7accord old forum. its also gonna be fair to the guys who maintain it.

It as an administrative tool, there is a "word censor" that you can replace any bad word with either a different word, or a bunch of ***'s.  Those were just words that Art chose to replace "bad words", which I felt were very corny.  As I have mentioned before, I prefer not to treat you guys like children unless you act like children.

Oh!  Are there shortcut key commands for font effects like bold and italics?  I keep hitting ctrl+b and pulling up bookmarks.  It's fucking annoying!  <--- (lol just for jokes, but... the key commands, that's no joke).

I don't think there are kb shortcuts but on the top of the reply box there are the commands you're looking for. Just type between the parentheses to get the desired effect.

I've noticed a latency when clicking the post button sometimes, and if you click it a second time it goes fast but, post the same thing twice. I dont know if there is anything we can do about that but, i'm putting the info out there.

I'm not sure if it's the server or what.  Since we've been getting busier, may be due to the amount of traffic.  I have noticed it too, but I'm patient and just wait for my posts to be submitted instead of clicking the submit button more than once.

Has the forum not updated for day light savings time?

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on March 13, 2009, 01:42:51 PM
That depends on your User Control Panel settings.  Time zone and day light savings time vary from user to user, so you have to change that yourself.  To change that, you would click on "User Control Panel" at the top right of the page just below the banner, then select "Board Preferences" in the column on the left.  That will automatically bring you to the "Edit global settings" page and you can see where you can adjust the time zone and turn DST on and off.

This is a really really small insignificant thing, but if you wanted to, you could match the background color of the logo at the top with that blueish color around it. It'll give it a cleaner look. I could even do it for you if you wanted. In fact, here you go:

To be honest, I would rather use a picture from an ECM meet with ECM members.  I threw this together from the meet we had.  It obviously needs work, but it's a bit better than what we have right now.  Now I have to try and remember how to change it.

easiest way to change it: go through to these folders on your ftp      /forums/styles/subsilver2/imageset/site_logo.gif

and replace site_logo.gif with your image and name it the same thing (meaning it also needs to be a gif and named site_logo)

Yeah, I would love to do that.  Too bad it's been forever since I've made any changes and forgot how to change it on the server.  I haven't gotten much help with it, so I guess it will remain the way it is right now until I can figure it out or get more help.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: mnkyman on June 12, 2009, 11:45:52 AM
let me know if you need any help via email (my elitecm username @gmail) or pm

usually you can type this in your browser: ftp://elitecm.net (http://ftp://elitecm.net) , it will then ask for you username and pw, which you can find if you log in to your 1and1 account and go to FTP Accounts

You can then navigate the folders and find the file as I described in my previous post

another way is to download a free program FileZilla (which can do the same as doing the "ftp://..." method but it will save your username and pw and makes it easier to add/delete files)

I figured it out.  I was on my MacBook and was using Safari for the browser.  I remember setting this up on my PowerBook with Firefox and used the control panel.  Since Safari isn't a supported browser, it didn't show where I could access the ftp folders.  I just tried at my work comp and got access.  I'll just try to use XP on my MacBook from now on when I want to change anything on the site.  Definitely a huge "duh" moment.  In my defense, it was over a year ago that I did this.

well if you really want to learn setting up the whole thing, you can make a dummy site and install a forum on there to mess around with, that way if you want to try something new on ECM, you can try it there first and if it works great, if not...you haven't lost everything...

If my memory serves me correctly, you use 1and1 for hosting. They usually allow you to have anywhere from 10 to 25 databases with their basic hosting packages, so you can make a sub domain on ecm (as in go into the ftp and make a folder entitled "TestSite"...and then when you go to elitecm.net/TestSite ...you will get whatever is in that folder, so you can create another forum in there)...i'm currently doing the same thing making dummy sites to learn how to use WordPress (a blog software). As far as actually installing the phpbb forum software, they usually have step by step instructions on their website or README files

Ok, so in the Classfield rules it states that new members cannot post to to prevent from people just selling on the forum. I am at the moment a new member as stated by the text below my name. I think that the status below our names such as "newbie" or "new member" is what may confuse some people on that rule with that rule, since they may think theyve posted quite a bit, but they may still be classified and a "new member". I think it would be cleared if you change that to people who are newbies cannot post in the classfields or something along those lines.

Somebody will probably wanna kick my ass for suggesting this, but since I view this site from work, I've noticed one major annoyance.

Tim, might you and the community consider changing the Maximum signature pic size to something smaller? Maybe like 500 x 200 or somthing like that.

Why?

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Why?

Cause the images are to damn big!  but actually, I don't know how many members surf the site from work, but when I do surf at work, I try to keep it low key because anybody walking by my desk can see my monitor. Therefore, with the sig images being so big, it catches too much attention.

I wonder if others have this issue?

Considering that the banner width is 800 px and the maximum picture width is 1200 px, I want to keep the signature width the same size or smaller.  Anything larger than that becomes offensively large.  I want to give people enough room, but at the same time, limit those people who always take things too far.  I'm fairly content with the maximum signature width being 800 px.  I don't see the point in making it any smaller because it would just create problems.

It can't be changed Misha.  This version of phpBB calculates font size as a percent, not as a 1 = tiny, 2 = small, 3 = normal, 4 = large, 5 = huge.  Normal font size is 100 = 100%.  If you want the font to be smaller, the number should be less than 100, if you want it larger, it should be more than 100.  When you post here it is 50 = tiny, 85 = small, 100 = normal, 150 = large, 200 = huge.

I'm curious as why spell check has been put under the "chop block" category.  Don't we have spell check?  lol

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: CrackerTeg on July 09, 2009, 11:08:37 AM
Because the spell check would interfere with the acronyms people use. If you wanted spell check, type it up on Word then copy paste into here.

I'm waiting on Keith to hook up a banner picture.  He has the pics already and knows what I want.

As far as a spell check is concerned, FUCK THAT!!  It would just make the site slower, cause problems with intarwebs speak, and be a pain in the ass.  Buy a fucking dictionary if you don't know how to spell.

not sure if its been said before but rollover indexing preview would be AWESOME.  (i.e. getting a preview of the thread before clicking into it).

also - i said it before, but all outside links to a new window (target="_blank").  just add that to the href and problemo solved.  (in full <a href="newwindow.html" target="_blank">a new window</a>). its just mad annoying to click on outside links, navigate around and then realize you lost the elitecm page
EDIT: sorry tim, just looked back to the OP and noticed the 2nd request is on the to do list ::slaponwrist::

Basically, when you hover your cursor over the link for the topic title, it'll have a little box that shows the first couple sentences of the post. I don't really know how to do that, though. Actually, I do now:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 0&t=794905 (http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=794905)

Not sure if your phpbb board can do mods or not... I work with SMF boards, but usually they are pretty similar in design.

I know what the preview thing is actually.  I meant the 2nd part after "also".

To be honest, I think those rolover indexing things are annoying.  Whenever I'm on a forum that has them it always pisses me off because the preview gets in the way of the next few thread titles.

Oh, my bad. But yeah, they do tend to be pretty annoying.

But as far as the links go, look at what I found:

http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/links-o ... w-windows/ (http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/links-opening-new-windows/)

A couple of forums I visit have an option in your personal settings where you can turn off avatars and signatures.  Is that something that would be easy to do?  Seeing the same pictures over and over again gets a bit annoying plus it would decrease page load times.

^this can be done already.. instructions:

click on your "user control panel" located top right of the page.
then click on "board preferences" located on the left hand side of the screen
next in the same location, click "display settings" and there will be a place where you can select to display signatures/avatars.

What about a box that shows 'what people are doing'. You can click on someone's profile and see that their viewing a certain thread or updating their profile. And to add upon this have it where you can see who is viewing the thread your looking at. I know there is something at the bottom that says, "users browsing this fourm". Just trying to take it one step further. Is this too much effort for little gain?

If this has already been suggested sorry.

Hey Tim, I made a Paypal button for you using the email you posted a couple pages back.

The end result is simply this:

I'm working on finding a good location to put the button, and I think that in the top right corner of the page would work. You can check it out here:
http://www.alpha27.net/dev/phpBB3/index.php (http://www.alpha27.net/dev/phpBB3/index.php)
It can either be floating with the browser, to where it's always in the top right corner, or it can just be at the top of the page. Currently the donate button is set to stay fixed with the browser. Click here (http://www.alpha27.net/dev/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1&p=3#p3) to see it in action while scrolling.

Also, I figured out how to set up RSS on phpBB. You can check it out on the dev site. I even altered the forum so that posted links will open in a new window/tab.

I added you on AIM, so we can add this donate button and RSS feed whenever you'd like.

Slipkord, did you know that you could click on the Who's Online title and get to this page?
viewonline.php?sg=0 (http://elitecm.net/forums/viewonline.php?sg=0)
It pretty much does everything you talked about.

(http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/3214/frontpage.th.png) (http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/3214/frontpage.png)

I can't actually upload the page to anything right now, because I don't have remote access to my home server (security measure). I'll upload it when I get home so you can check it out as a real web page. I sliced the image into parts so that the "ENTER HERE" part is a clickable link that goes to the forum.

That can be done. Just throw me the pics.

Also, Tim, I wouldn't recommend making the picture fill up the whole page, mainly because of two reasons. 1) People have different resolutions on their computer, and it may interfere with how the picture will show up, and 2) Having such a large picture load on the page will take forever to even load.

I'll figure something out.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on October 28, 2009, 12:21:37 PM
Okay man.  I just think it would look better to have the email link in the picture instead of being on the border.  To me, that would look a lot better.  I'm considering incorporating a Ride Of The Month and having their car featured on the main page.  I would rather keep the banner the same picture instead of something that always changes.  I just like to have some regularity instead of it looking different every time you sign on.

Check this bitch out guys:

http://www.alpha27.net/dev/ECM/frontpage2/ (http://www.alpha27.net/dev/ECM/frontpage2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Damn I'm awesome! Does everyone like the larger size / cool rollover links?

The roll over links look good man.  If I had time, I could try to create that in flash.

Better. I like the fact that the picture is larger than the first one. The rollovers look good. And Tim, if you do flash, many of us with iPhones may not be able to view it. Damn you Apple!

Yeah, that was a big issue for me too.  I'm glad Jeff could help us update that feature.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on October 29, 2009, 12:13:17 PM
No problem. Like I said, though, all links prior to this mod will still open in the same window. If you come across this (and it's one of your posts), you can simply just edit your post then resave it. Otherwise, any moderator or admin that finds one that still opens in the same window can edit the post themselves and resave it.

I'll be updating the main page when I get home from football today, so expect ECM to become even more awesome! Afterwards, I think I'm going to start coming up with some ideas on how to get a Member of the Month rolling. So far I haven't found any mods directly for phpBB, so this may be something that we'll have to do manually.

Also, I just found a pack of 918 smilies, so I may upload that to see what they're about.

New main page is up. Although, it seems like it loads a little slow. I already tried making the file size smaller once, but if I go any further, it's going to look like crap.

OP updated.  Could you make the picture physically smaller possibly?  Maybe that will reduce the file size a little bit.  I personally wouldn't mind if it was a little bit smaller.

I just made the front page smaller. I toned the pic down from 1000 x 700 to 900 x 630. Is that good for you guys? See, it's hard for me to figure out a good size because I've got a 20" widescreen monitor with a 1680 x 1050 resolution, so I've got plenty of room, lol. The main page loads quicker now, too.

It's not completely live, but rather it updates every minute. I've found that with the one I use on a different site all the time, it works flawlessly. You'd never guess that it's not a live shoutbox.

Shoutbox has been added. Just need to wait for Tim or an admin to purge the cache.

Also, the registration emails have been fixed so that once registered, you will get a link in the email that shows you have to get your account activated. Once your account is activated, a second email is sent with a link to the forum rules.

Man, we're kicking some ass! We've updated/upgraded/altered 8 things within the past 4 days!

Hey Tim, I just noticed this. If you do a Google search for "elitecm", the meta description I made for the forum index actually shows up now. The main page hasn't changed, though. It's harder to do one for that because in theory there is no content, just some links.

My suggestion.......add the shoutbox to the top of the screen, instead of the bottom. Is this even possible? I figured it would be easier for people to view it, rather than scrolling down to the bottom of the page. Not sure if it's worth the trouble. Just an idea!

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: CrackerTeg on November 06, 2009, 07:19:58 PM
I think I had mentioned that elsewhere but can't find it. Tim wanted to keep it at the bottom because there's already enough clutter at the top of the page. I'd agree with wanting to put it at the top since it seems that most people miss it because its at the bottom but ultimately, the final placement is up to him.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on November 06, 2009, 10:34:07 PM
Having it at the top would make it better, but I'd have to agree with Tim; there's already too much clutter. I did add a link that'll take you straight down to the shoutbox, though. It's better than nothing.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on November 07, 2009, 08:00:44 AM
IMHO, the shoutbox at the top of the screen is going to be way too cluttered.  To prove my point, if Jeff wants to mock up a page, you'll see what I'm talking about.  Either way, it's going to stay at the bottom.  The link that Jeff put at the top of the page works really well for those of you who are too lazy to scroll down to the bottom of the page.

When you click "View New Posts" and there isn't anything new, click "No unread topics found since your last visit. Click here to try all unread topics." and it will show you everything that you haven't read yet.

wow, what a change.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: NWINNIE34 on July 01, 2010, 05:52:21 PM
the change is a little crazy....

over on TSXCLUB we have rep points..... its a pretty cool idea

say someone needs help, you give him some tips/tricks/hints/instruction/experiences..... show them a link or express your useful opinion, he can click below your name and give you positive rep points....

now say someone needs help or has a question, you give him false information.....or if your a straight dick to them, or if you have a bad sale/experience with someone you can give them negative rep points

these all tally up below your name....say every 20 rep points you get a bar...once you have 2-3 bars or even 6-7 bars like the longtimers you know that guys been around and has a lot of useful information.....where as you see someone with 1 bar or a red (negative) rep....you avoid them and be cautious with for sale posts, information, attitude, etc...

i know this isn't necessarily a new forum.... so this might not jive as some people in the 1000+ post range have been here from the beginning, and that speaks for itself
helps people to get good useful information, promote a helping/lend a hand environment, and flag out the people who dont belong here

just a thought

Everyone now has the option of having the shoutbox either at the top of the page, or at the bottom. To choose which one you want, just simply collapse the one you aren't going to use by clicking the minus button on the right side.

When you click on "view your posts", is there any way for just topics to show up that you've either created or posted in, rather than showing every post you've made one-by-one?  I liked that old way of "searching" just for my stuff better.  :-[

Not that I know of.  To be honest, I'm still getting used to this new format as you guys are.  Jeff is the one that sold me on this format since he said it was more modifiable.  He would be the best person to make suggestions to in this thread.

I'm sure many have noticed the rep points under everyone's user name. As Tim said in the Off Topic thread, let's not abuse them. I'll come out and say I was guilty of a couple. My question is directed towards everyone on the forum. How do you guys propose on using these things? I've never seen a forum with them so I'm curious of what you guys think. Positive/ negative sales? Good/ bad advice? Shoot some suggestions. Hell, its the title of the thread.

the rep points could be a bad idea because anyone can give negative points based on personal issues which can easily arise between members that dont know each other well. i believe that a member should have a certain number of posts before being allowed to give points to another member.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: wtcii on August 25, 2010, 11:25:30 AM
I think to give negative/positive points you should have to submit a reason and allow that person to see it and give them the ability to protest it. Not sure if that is possible though.

but then who would be the one to evaluate whose argument is valid? sounds like it would create alot of extra work for the admins.

All valid points.  It was something that another member had suggested and was easy to implement.  I'm not sure if it could be modified to give reasons that need to be approved by a moderator, but that's not a bad idea.  Realistically, we would have one person appointed to "moderate" the negative and positive comments.  It would be pretty nice to make it available for everyone to see what was said and who said it.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Mike on August 25, 2010, 02:25:34 PM
Another option to this might be to have it set up so only Mod's and above can give the points then members could reccomend them via PM. I'd take the burden of tracking it but, we would have to write out a set of guide rules which we can work together on. I have some ideas.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

I'm for that completely. The way its set up now is that any jackass can give neg/ pos points and nobody but the person who gave them knows. I wonder how difficult it'd be to set up that system and maybe I can edit the feedback thread and possibly add those to the rep points. Again, feedback on that idea is welcome.

I just changed the upcoming events/birthday thing to where it'll only show the event or birthday on the day it's happening. I'm still trying to figure out a way to change the text from "Upcoming Birthdays" and "Upcoming Events" to "Today's Birthdays" and whatnot.

Also, if you find any smilies that you want added, post them here. Bill, I know you posted a couple in the ECM chatroom.

I've tried figuring out a solution to this, but I just can't seem to find a way to change it to what you're describing. It sucks I know, but we'll just have to make do with how it is until I can figure out a damn way to change it, lol.

Edit: Another new update. I installed an "Advanced Reputation System" mod that massively alters the built-in karma system. I'll be talking with Tim about how to get this properly set up.

Edit2: More smilies!

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

He actually changed how the reputation thing works last night.  Now, you have reputation points based on a few different parameters.  You can see who gave you a negative rep point and they can leave a comment why.  Now the anonymity is gone, so I have a feeling that fuckers won't be abusing it any more.  To use this feature, click the red/green arrow icon between the email and PM icons for another member.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Go to your profile and on the left you'll see a link that says "View Reputation". Also, moderators and admins have the ability to delete reputation if there are any problems.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: wtcii on September 26, 2010, 02:32:33 PM
What is the rating based upon?

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on September 26, 2010, 02:53:00 PM
You get a point for every post you make, and 3 points for every thread. For every 100 points you get, you gain 1 power. For every 1000 points you get a bar. When people give you good or bad rep, it gives you positive or negative points based on the giver's rep. So if Tim gives someone rep, it weighs more because he has a lot of rep.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: wtcii on September 26, 2010, 02:54:33 PM
Oh, okay. This is a lot better than the previous method.

No big deal.  Now, I just click on "view unread replies", which is basically along the lines of what I was requesting.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: CrackerTeg on September 29, 2010, 03:11:25 PM
This isn't a suggestion but more of a heads up. Those of you that have a keen eye may have already noticed the trader rating. I went and updated everyone's rating based on the feedback thread. Obviously, I didn't buy and sell all the shit that reflects in your feedback but in the details, it shows what you typed for the person you left feedback for. One other thing, the feedback thread has been removed as a result of the forum mod. Enjoy!

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Keep the suggestions rolling in, guys. Chances are I could probably implement it (with the exception of a few things already). Also, like I said, if you find a good smiley that you like, post it here so I can add it to the site.

How has everyone been holding up with the new format so far?

Thanks guys.

One thing I really should've done though was catalog all of the modifications i've done to the site. The reason why is when an update comes out, it'll overwrite most of the changes i've done. Having a list of everything i've done would make it easier to remember what I did. I'm pretty sure that most of the canges i've made i've announced here though, so it shouldnt be too hard to go back.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on October 07, 2010, 10:39:21 PM
One thing that I want to point out. I don't know if it's been bothering just me, but I hate how links in posts are the same color as regular text, so you can't distinguish a link from regular text without hovering over it. I've already made it so that it underlines when you hover over the link, but I still don't think that's enough.

What do you guys think? Should I make the links darker or brighter than regular text?

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on October 07, 2010, 10:48:06 PM
I concur.  Make links a different color.  Blue seems to be the universal link color.  I'd like to see a dark blue. ;)

Post by: timot_one on October 09, 2010, 10:54:56 PM
It could just be my laptop, but I had a hard time telling the difference.  Whatever though.  I'm open to other colors too.  Doesn't have to be blue.  Maybe grey won't stick out so much, but will remain noticeable?

Tim,

You should make a preview of the thread when you hover your pointer over the thread title

I actually hate that feature.  The "preview" box always blocks other thread titles and gets in the way of shit I'm trying to read.  For the record, I make none of these changes.  Jeff deserves all the credit for doing the work.

The Trade Count idea is a great way to quickly see how many feedback somebody has, but I don't think that they should be in parenthesis. In accounting, anything in parenthesis is a negative number (or red). The first time I saw it on mine I thought, how did I get -3 already lol.

Just a thought. Keep up the great work  :)

I don't like it at the bottom.  It's a shout box and should be at the top. People should know the difference between logging in and shouting.

I liked it at the top.  Honestly, if you're not smart enough to pay attention to what you're doing, then you deserve to get fucked with.  The way we set it up before is that it was both at the top and bottom and it was collapsable on either end.  I'd prefer to keep it that way.

I just added a mod that will resize really large pics and will turn them into thumbnails that you can click to open in a new window. When I looked at Bill's post of his iphone I was like holy shit! So I decided to install this mod. While I was installing it, I accidentally typo'd a couple lines of code, so it took the whole site down, lol. It's all good now, though!

Title: Re: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on February 28, 2011, 11:06:51 PM
It's because I made the threshold too high. I originally had it set to downsize pics that were 640px or wider, but thn I changed it to 900px. That may have been a bit much haha.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on February 28, 2011, 11:08:48 PM

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on February 28, 2011, 11:10:25 PM
The only problem is it will do it to signatures as well. When it was at 640px, it sized down your sign. I'll have to figure something out.

Z, I think I may have fixed the problem, but I'm not sure. Let me know if you run into any more errors. As far as the resize mod goes, I got rid of it for now, until I can figure out a better solution.

FYI, I'm pretty sure there is a thumbnail code that the Imageshack uploader will give you, so if you know that the pic is extremely huge (Bill!) you could use that code instead.

The reason why it shows only after you log in is because most of the news is for members only. Also, you can't even use the shoutbox if you're not logged in, so the news ticker wouldn't even matter if people are trying to use the shoutbox while not logged in.

Ok, now that I'm a little sober, let me clarify this.  The shoutbox can still be used if your not logged in, I just tested it.  I just think that it doesn't make sense for the red ticker that says, don't use the shout box to log in, only appears after you've logged in.  If it's possible to make it visible before hand, I would do it like that.

Damn, I just tested it too, and you're right. I even have it set to not display to guests, but I guess it's not working. Either way, I changed it so that guests can see the news ticker now.

I could probably make a workaround to where you have to log in to see the shoutboxes... I'm not sure why it's not working how it should be. I'll have to look into it.

Alright, I just changed the shoutbox so that if you're not logged in, you can't view it, and it instead tells you to login before you can use it.

For some reason, an update to Tinyportal (the mod I use to be able to make blocks to show the shoutbox and countdown and what) messed up how it handles who is able to view what. This workaround I did will work for now.

I also made it so that you have to login to see how many days until Z gets back. If you're not logged in, there's a nice message for you.

Also, for those of you that don't know, this site does support Tapatalk. All you have to do is make a search for "elitecm".

Title: "Product Review" Sub-Forum/Thread?
Post by: Accord Euro-R on April 07, 2011, 10:43:40 AM
I remember there was a thread like this over on Gen7 Classic which helped me out several times when I was looking to purchase items for my car.  I haven't been able to find anything else on here, but I was thinking if one could be made it might help out some of our newer members with their questions about mods/parts/supplies they are considering.  I want to write reviews on several products I have used recently but have no specific place to do so.

Mods - Any chance a "Product Review" sub-forum could be created, perhaps under "Black Market" area or anywhere really?  Keep it simple, 1 ongoing thread per product.  Just a thought.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: timot_one on April 08, 2011, 12:13:25 AM
Ben, it would have been more appropriate for you to post in this thread instead of creating a new thread.  That's why we have this thread.

Anyway, on to your suggestion.  I think a product review area is a great idea.  I'm not sure how I want to work it out yet though.  I'm going to try and figure out if we should just have one product review sub forum in the lounge or black market, or if we want to have a product review sub forum in each general forum.  I'll work that one out and create whatever seems to be appropriate.

Title: Re: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: CrackerTeg on June 23, 2011, 01:00:27 PM
The tapatalk sigs can be disabled by the user. I'm sure its also something Jeff can filter within the forum itself. My .02, the ridiculous sigs are my fault. I spawned that beast by creating the "Sent from my Droid, bitch" sig and it got out of hand with Bill's response sig. I don't think eliminating the sigs altogether would be the way to go and should be left as the responsibility of the user.

Title: Re: Site Suggestions

Jeff,

Can you bridge two threads into one?  For example, if there's a check engine light issue and some of the codes are the same for both the K's and the J's, can you bridge them, so that it doesn't matter if somebody posts something in either thread, they both show up together?

Give me a call if you want me to explain this a little better?

Title: Re: Site Suggestions
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on June 24, 2011, 02:48:07 PM
I think I get what you're saying. You want one thread, but in both the K and J series forum? I've actually never seen a thread like that before on a forum, unless I installed some kind of announcement mod that shows the thread in every forum.

Personally, I think it would be easier to have the K series forum to have its own thread, and the J series forum to have its own thread. Alternatively, the check engine discussion thread could be moved to the General Automotive forum, since that is as general as it gets, lol.

Don't know if anyone has seen what popped up in the shoutbox COUGH Tim, Jeff COUGH but its not going to be free anymore. As of the new year, that shit will be dead, unless of course something already got done about it. Figured I'd bring it up in here even though I don't use it as much as some of the other guys here.

Here's the basic gist of it:
Quote
Eventually, users with free accounts will need to switch to a paying plan or stop using the service. The date is set at January 1, 2012. After this date, free accounts will stop working unless upgraded to a paid plan.

The good news is that ShoutMix will be available for only $0.99/month and will be available effective immediately. For our old version (the Classic) it will only be available in Premium package which costs approximately $1.67/month.

Either way works for me. I'm partial to the OG way of talking on forums. Shoutboxes I normally don't use.

It never did anything for me, it was a 2nd smaller chat room.  It's not worth paying for IMHO.

Yeah the shoutbox to me has always been pointless, hence why I have never said a word on it lol. Good choice in not paying for it.

FL accords did a pretty cool idea, their banner has rides of members.  with every refresh or a different page opened within the forum, the banner changes to a different member's car

I like the idea.  We would need a lot of pictures though.  The pictures would have to be 797x163 also.  Let me talk to Jeff when I have time and see if that's something that's easy enough to do.  After that, I'll open up a thread to have people submit pictures in the banner size/format.

Yea, we could take a lot of the pics from the picture threads.. I have plenty I could send in, especially after the 10th :D

You're putting the cart before the horse there guys.  I'll talk to Jeff first, and if it's possible for him to do it, we can start collecting pictures.  I would rather have people provide pictures of their own cars (with their permission) in the correct format so that minimal editing needs to be done.  I'm not about to just start searching through threads and picking off old pictures without the owner's permission.  I want to be sure that the owners want their car pictured, and I want to make sure they're a current and active member.

Agreed. I'm down with throwing my car into the mix once we get word that Jeff can do it.

I just had an idea. Add a man points counter. Kinda like the reps and such. Like someone posts a kick ass bacon recipe in the recipe thread and +20 man points to you!

Tapatalk for iCrap sucks. Used it for a bit on that loaner iPad. Nothing but problems. My two android devices? Just fine.

I haven't had many problems with Tapatalk on my iPhone. I've heard Tapatalk2 is junk though. Maybe it's just because you're an iHater though. Either way, if there's an issue with Tapatalk, sometimes it needs to be updated on the forum. Please post in here if you do have an issue so it can be resolved.

Its not because I'm an iHater at all. Its just the way it is.

Z, that's weird, because I always have issues with the page numbers on Tapatalk. For example, page 132 will show page 132, but page 131 will show page 132 as well. Fuck!

Well, the problem that I have is that every 2 days or so the app won't let get onto the site. Some message pops up about the plugin not functioning correctly. So my solution, that Jeff showed me, is to delete the app and reinstall it. Which gets annoying.

For fixing the page number issue, all you need to do is refresh the page, then it shows up correctly.
