I'm at my local honda dealership while they're performing required maintenance on my car. (05 Accord EX sedan) and I'm wondering if everyone else gets required maintenance done or if they just do it themselves.

So let me ask: Do you get required maintenance done or do you do it yourself?

I do most of my own maintenance. Personally I feel more comfortable knowing what goes into, and comes out of my car.

I cant really remember what the 60K was since I'm at about 110K now but I think it's simple enough to do yourself. Actually most of the required maintenance's are simple enough to do besides like valve adjustments and crap like that.

I'm still here while they're performing it and one of the technicians just tried to get me to agree to a front brake replacement for $240.00. No thanks.

I don't think I'll ever get required maintenance done again, just do it myself.

^Yeah the only time doin it yourself may be a problem is if you ever have a warranty claim.  Some dealers will try to get shitty with you if you havent had maintenance done at the dealer and then come in for a warranty claim. Especially if the warranty claim is related to whatever maintenance you did yourself or had somebody else do.

You can get really nice pads and rotors for the price they are trying to charge you!

I do my own maintenance because I'm capable of doing it.  The last time I went to a dealership was to have a RSX Type S flywheel, ACT HDSS clutch, TSX 6MT, and TL Type S front sway bar installed by Skippy.  Everything else, I have done on my own because it's less expensive for me to buy all the parts/fluids and do it myself, plus it makes me feel more manly when I'm finished.

Change Oil Filter
Change Transmission Fluid
Change Cabin Air Filter
Change Air Filter
Change Coolant (Optional or if coolant is dirty or has been 5 years since last changed)
Change Brake Fluid (Optional or if dirty/contaminated)
Rotate Tires

Front Brakes for $240. That is outrageous. I'm going to let you guys on a secret about the dealers (Esp. Honda Dealerships). Never ever do brakes through them. They pad slap their brake jobs. They don't resurface rotors. Don't know if Skippy can chime in on this, but the 2 Honda dealers in my area pad slap their brake jobs.

That's weak about the brakes.  You can do your own front brakes for less than $200 depending on the products you buy and where you buy them.

My dealership always recommends to resurface the rotors and we have very few customers that will not agree to having the work done.  We charge a flat 89.95 fee whether you resurface the rotors or not.  If your rotors are too warped to be cut or are out of service limit, we recommend changing them.  We also will recommend a brake flush which I believe is another $80 IIRC and that should be done every three years but I do it on my vehicle every year.  The tech removes all fluid from the reservoir, replaces it with new fluid, and then runs a full container of brake fluid through the lines to remove all old fluid.  If it was $240 for a resurface and pad replacement...yeah that's freaking ridiculous....if it was to replace pads and rotors...sounds a little bit better....if it was all that and a brake flush, it's probably spot on.

I need new front brakes so I went to the dealership for shits and giggles.  The service rep quoted me 460 for front pads and rotors and an additional 100 dollars for the brake flush.....a little expensive I think so.

Yeah Jason that does seem a little excessive for just pads rotors and brake flush.


Yeah I ended up doing my brakes myself w/ a little help from my moms boyfriend. We replaced the front brake pads and brand new rotors for about $80 with my moms discount from a parts store. (My mom worked at a dealership for 25 years so I still get a discount at parts stores, woot!   )

And the only reason I got the work done is because I was under the impression I had to get the required maintainence done to keep up my warranty, but I found out that wasn't true. Oh well, lesson learned.
