Title: Your oppinions please..
Post by: LiquidX on May 04, 2009, 02:39:33 PM
When i bought the accord, it was exceptionally priced. But after 2 years of ownership i crave a manual. So here it is, i decided to get a cheap older car to mod and play with, while leaving the accord untouched until the warranty is up.

Heres a potential car:
1989 Honda Prelude 4ws 2.0 Si with 191K for $800. Not harassed and one owner.

should i go for it? im looking for a cheap fun car.

i think a mid 90's accord or prelude would be the way to go.

hmmm are there any other options that you were looking at?

manual and cheap, im looking for under $1500. So anything mid 90's is out. Besides 135hpd 127tq isnt bad, already better than non-si civics. Its a dohc, and with a little elbow grease i could get it to a quickness. I dont care for any options. I got my inspired accord for all that

You dont see many of the older gens anymore. So thats a plus.

Heres the list i was going by before:
1989 nissan 240sx 5mt ka24de $2000
1991 mazda miata 5mt, 200k $2100
1989 ae92 corolla gts, then i found out it was fwd, so i backed out $1800
1988 1jz single turbo supra, needed too much work $1900
1990 rx7, also too much work. $2000
1992 civic vx hatch, too weak, but very clean. $1700

Besides, a little bit of motor work and a mid-level ebay turbo. I should have around 170whp. Which is quite enough for a fun time.

if you want it as just a GG/DD i say go for it. I wish i had another car besides my accord to drive to work in. I hate putting all these city miles on it. Other than the normal recomendations like take it for a test drive and seeing if there are any maint record available and getting a carfax, looks like a solid deal. Then again you could always do an 800 dollar mod the the accord

Buy it. Old school hondas are a lot of fun. I love the headlights. I've owned an 87 and an 89 accord and they were both nice cars.

Don't get it.  The 4 wheel steer Prelude is a death trap.  Those cars are so unsafe.

seriously? Ill always take Tims advice. Whats the biggest problem with the 4ws, dont i have to engage it for it to actually steer with all 4. If so, i dont plan on doing it, regardless.

I would personally save my money and buy something a little newer...we're talking about a 20 year old vehicle here...thats the time that very weird things start breaking and finding parts gets harder and harder.

I would suggest a mid 90's civic or newer integra...then a K swap :)

I have to agree wihth Skip on this one... A 20 year old car even if it runs great things still randomly break and the parts that you need will be scarce... I personally would save up a little bit and but a EG hatch in great condition and then after some time do i Ksawp, After riding in one I really want to build one but my finances do not allow such toys

ok, i love the responses and i do appreciate the input. I dont plan on doing a K swap, or a B swap ever. This is a car that i would play around with for the summer months while im home from school, then park it on the side of the street until winter and spring breaks come around. Eg and dc, even DAs are hard to find in my surrounding area in ok condition. People ask stupid prices for cars that make this prelude look new.

Well, I have to contradict myself, IF that is what you want then go for it. I cannot say I dont blame you for wanting a older car to sort of toy with as i am saving to buy a 240sx project

the 1989 nissan 240sx 5mt ka24de $2000 sounds nice cause the aftermarket is crazy for that car plussssss you drive a FWD car...a project RWD car would be fun

I agree with Tim, in that the rear wheel steering is really weird.  But I disagree with Skip!  The 83 Prelude is the stuff!  The engine is so simple!  None of this power-steering, ABS, or any other complicated convenient or safety enhancing technology :D

gl :)

Everyone here has not even mentioned an american car, what's wrong with a chevy malibu, buick regal, ford mustang or even a olds cutlass supreme?
you can still get one for about $1,500 or less, some granny or grandpa would love to free up some garage or yard space, just gotta look, you gonna get the same gas usage as if getting a japanese or european car anyway and also the parts for
an american car can be even cheaper if you need to change anything, all I'm saying is you got a lot of options, american is just another.

This is just my opinion, so take it however you want.  If you're planning on modding your Accord after the warranty expires, you'd just be wasting money on a beater car.  I'd save my money and spend it on the Accord when you do start modding it.  Instead of blowing a few thousand on a POS car that will cost you more for maintenance than it will in upgrades, put that money in a bank account so you can save it for your Accord.
