Title: Orangey stuff and the removing of.
Post by: Jellynuts on April 29, 2009, 12:57:07 AM
I googled on how to get rid of orange peel, but when I looked up what it actually is, well... I couldn't find a good answer.

Where does it come from?  And is wet sanding the only way to get rid of it?  Can you claybar it off?

[Edit] My apologies, this post is NOT about Orange Peel!

Orange peel is usually the result of a bad paint job, mostly improper or not enough prep-work. I'm pretty sure that you can only get rid of it by repainting the car. Maybe you're talking about something else that has developed over the years that you have owned you car though

You can wet sand it but you have to be carefull because orange peel is usually because the clear was sprayed on dry and sprayed on flat, so therefore its usually a thin layer of clear.  Just gt yourself a nice sanding block and 2000 grit sand paper and take your time.  i have heard clay bar removing orange peel but the orange peel would have to be almost non existant

Wet sand (more than once) then machine polish (more than once) or a complete strip down and repaint by a pro. Clay has NO effect on orange peel. In short, it's not worth it.

+1 to what Rick said.  Every car (that's not a show car) has orange peel.

WHOOPS!

Sorry, did more reading on google, and orange peel is not what I thought it was.  I was more referring to those orange/yellow specs that get stuck on the body.

Clay bar should take pollen and stuff out that won't wash out

well pollen should wash out. but yeah orange peel is just from a bad paint job. sanding is whats needed to get rid of it.

Sorry RJ, but you are mistaken about orange peel.  All factory paint jobs have orange peel.  Only show cars or expensive paint jobs don't have orange peel.

Jellynuts, you may want to try and identify what you're trying to clean off and rename the thread.

Agreed, orange peel is normal unless you own a Rolls. What the hell is it you are trying to remove? Got a camera?

Thanks for the response everyone.  My apologies for misleading the thread however, I wasn't talking about Orange Peel.  I'll have a picture in the next day up as to what I'm referring to.

Bah, I feel like an idiot.  Ahwell.

If orange peel is really what you are describing wetsanding will level it out BUT you then need to compound with wool (more than likely a couple times) then multiple steps of varying polishes will be needed to restore the gloss... This process should not be be tried unless you have tested your process MULTIPLE times on a scrap panel...

If it is contaminants on top of the paint (fall out / rail dust / etc), clay bar will remove it.
