Title: Modified Mugen Sport Shift assembly and a new shift knob :)
Post by: Skippy on April 09, 2009, 08:00:38 PM
I didn't want to steal the OP's fire in the "Comptech SSK and monster knob" thread so I'll post up my pretty pictures here :)

As most of you know (or should know) I'm an OEM freak, and what you might not have known, is that I'm also a shift knob whore :)

I get tired of shift knobs easily and I've always flip-flopped between two predominant shifters; a Greddy coffin style shift knob, and a Skunk2 10th anniversary 440g shift knob.

I've also been a guinea pig for a lot of different shifter setups.  I've had the neuspeed short shift kit, I've run on a modified stock shift box, and I've gone as far as to cut and re-tap the stock shifter box without a short shift kit to achieve what I wanted.  After the threads that I tapped in the stock box randomly came undone, I decided to blow $230 on a Mugen sport shift assembly.

The description stated that Mugen had (among other awesome modifications) shortened the shift lever by approximately an inch.  When I still had my skunk2 shift knob it still sat ridiculously high for my tastes...The greddy shift knob gave the effect of a shorter shift lever because the threads started half way inside the knob and went to the top, whereas the skunk2 knob had the threads start from the bottom and they only went about half way into the knob.

As I stated in the monster knob thread, I've always wanted a spherical shift knob, and after seeing the S2000 CR's accessory shift knob, I determined that I had to have it.

Although Chris (MTSixspeed) had his shift lever cut and welded to lower the height, I decided to have the Angry Spic cut my shift lever, grind the lever down until the diameter matched the threaded portion that was cut off, and then tap the lever for the shift knob.

As usual I don't have pictures of how it was done because it was an "on the fly" modification, so I'll just say that when Angry Spic said he could do it today I basically grabbed my car, parked it outside my buddy's bay and ripped the shifter box out in 20 minutes.  After the modification was complete, I reinstalled the shifter box, installed the new shift knob, and here's what I ended up with.  Enjoy!

Needless to say..it's what I've always wanted :)

Let me know what you guys think :)

I like it. Reminds me of how my shifter sat in my old DA. Your boy, the Angry Spic did exactly what I did to my shifter in my DA. I also tapped the ITR knob I had to go all the way to the top like your Greddy knob did. This is definitely something I am looking into doing later on.

This is a love hate thing for me.  I love the way it looks, the lowered height, and the shorter throws.  I hate the fact that I need to get this done and spend the money on a Mugen SSK that will need to go under the knife before I install it..

Don't hate on the woodgrain, gotta rep the EX package :)

I don't feel like painting all the panels black...it's too DX or LX-ish.  No offense to my buddies with LX's :)

Woah woah woah! What do you have against the LX's? At least we don't have sunroof's that can leak! HAHA!

Daaaaanm, that thing looks caved-in.  I love the shift know but I can't imagine the effort needed to shift with that thing!  How is it?

Must be hard to reach... I have the pspec shifter and I had to raise it up a bit a couple weeks ago.

Reverse lock out.  I don't think it's connected any more though.

I love the way it looks, im def. cuttin mine down maybe this weekend, the only thing is it looks like its almost too low, like you have to reach down in to get to the shift knob.  Around how much lower is it compared to the stock shifter assembly, assumin that the mugen one is 1 inch lower

The shifting isn't all that different in comparison to a comptech kit.  The better thing now is that I'm saving my synchros since the effort is on my end not the tranny's.

It's not difficult at all to reach.  It was a bit weird not to have it sitting as high, but it feels WONDERFUL to shift.  Resting my hand on the shifter from the different angle also changes things up a bit.

Yeah it does seem a little short from the pics but it's just about as high as the S2K CR knob sits...maybe a touch lower.

Oh yeah...the knob literally cannot go down any more, Infumous, lol.

Yes, Tim is right, the red button of doom was once my reverse lockout solenoid trigger...but I got tired of manually switching it on and off....so I disconnected it....too lazy to buy a replacement trim panel since I don't want the gaping hole in there...I also still have to get around to wiring up my reverse lockout solenoid to my brake switch...then I can actually have a working 5th to 6th gate...need motivation....

Milan, the effort isn't that bad.  Yeah it's a little more effort than I'm used to, but having it look this way and having a spherical knob makes overhand shifting so much more comfortable.

I used to like shiftknobs that encouraged "thumbs up" grip shifting, but they were uncomfortable for me since I'm more of an overhand shifter.  I prefer overhand to thumbs up.

I would love to take up the slack in the boot, but it's tapered so I can't stretch or cut it without rendering it useless.  I may find a solution to this using the TSX boot that I have on there, or I may actually pony up the $60 for the CR shift boot....don't know about it though because who knows if it'll fit even with modification...

Slammedk24 - It's not really a pain to reach down, more of an adventure :)  The mugen short shift kit places the lever 1" below what the standard shifter is at, and Angry Spic probably took off 1.5" from that, so figure 2.5" total????

I can't wait to drive my car in the morning!!!

for $60 (or less) you should check out some of the shops that do custom interiors. Most of them could fab up a nice shift boot in whatever material/color/size you want

love the short shifter - it makes it ridiculously fun to drive, but height is a bit too low IMO.  to each their own.  have fun with it!

Oh man, thanks for this thread.  I was trying to find a 6 speed knob, and completely forgot about Skunk2's and S2000's!

Your setup looks incredible!

I suppose...  being that you're a knob whore, the one's you have aren't for sale eh?  :D

I've been known to pimp out my old shift knobs when I'm not using them for my own purposes :)

Very nice Skip. You WILL help me do this one day. I dunno if I'd get the Mugen SSA, or just get an OEM assembly and keep my Neuspeed SSK. But this will happen on my car. The exposed metal stem of my shifter needs to be chopped off.
