Title: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: Nit3h4wk C0uP3 on November 21, 2012, 10:05:21 PM
Ok! Per request! Let's try this out..post everything and anything beer in here :) Recipes, pics of the beer you tried or the one your crazy Uncle Bob gave you. Memes, dates of limited releases, where to find the hard to find stuff, and fun merchandise. Have-at-it :) hopheads lol

Edit! It was recommended to use bottle caps for a rating system. 1 bottle cap being a crappy beer, and 5 bottle caps for an all around awesome beer and you want to go swimming in it. I'm not an expert on qualities (after taste, hops, bite and etc...) so I guess mentioCon which aspect stands out, or makes it suck! I figured I'd keep it simple, since we might be under the influence when rating. (I know I might be :)

Here's the list:

Aloha Series: Wailua  2 Caps
Arrogant Bastard Ale     3.5 Caps
Atwater brewery: Cherry Stout.   3 Caps
Berkshire Brewing Co: Dean's beans coffeehouse porter.  3 Caps
Big River: Sweet Magnolia   3.7 Caps
Blue Moon: Valencia Grove Amber  4 Caps
Blue Moon: Winter Abbey   3.5 Caps
Boulevard Brewing Co: 6th Glass   3.5 Caps
Capt Lawrence IPA     4 Caps
Cerveza Del Pacifico.   3 Caps
Crispin Cider     3 Caps
Flying Dog Brewery: In-heat wheat    2.5 Caps
Goose Island Honkers Ale.   4 Caps
Innis & Gunn: Rum Cask     5 Caps
Laguntas: Little sumpin sumpin ale.   4 Caps
Lion Stout     3.5 Caps
Magic Hat: #9      3 Caps
Magner's Irish Cider     3 Caps
Negra Modelo      3 Caps
North Country Brewery, Spring Ale.    4 caps.
Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale    3.5 Caps
Pabst Blue Ribbon         2 Caps
Sam Adams, Hazel Brown.   4 Caps
Sam Adams, Merry Mischief.   2 Caps
Sierra Nevada: Ruthless Rye IPA   4 Caps
Shadow's: Wild Blue   2 Caps
Shadow's: Wild Black   3.5 Caps
Shipyard: Smashed pumpkin.      3.5 Caps
Shock Top: End of the World Midnight Wheat.      2.5 Caps
Shock Top: Lemon Shandy   3.5 Caps
Shock Top: Honey Crisp Apple Wheat   2.5 Caps
Smithwicks Imported Irish Ale.     4 Caps
Tenacious Traveler Shandy   4 Caps
Wells, banana bread beer   4 Caps
Yuengling: Dark Brewed Porter    4 Caps
Yuengling: Traditional Amber Lager     .75 Caps

Sam Adams Hazel Brown

It's got a nice hazel nut / toffee flavor. I was really surprised by how good this was.

Edit: 4 CAPS

I actually tried that tonight too! I was surprised by the Hazelnut tones in it! You guys didn't lie it's awesome! :D

I'm hit or miss with Sam Adams...I love Cherry Wheat, Summer, and Porch Rocker, but don't care for Boston Lager, IPA's or the Winter..

I leave this up to Denny to decide, since it's her thread.  I would suspect that it gets too convoluted if we start posting anything that contains alcohol and I'm only posting beer that I would recommend somebody to try.

Just another thought, good rum deserves better than to be poured into a Solo cup.

Chris, you wanna make a booze hound thread? Or an Alcoholics not-so-anonymous thread? Lol

Title: Re: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: gargantula99 on December 04, 2012, 01:39:31 PM
Denny, I think you should come up with a rating system for us to use and modify your original post to list all of the beers that we've talked about.

No Separate booze thread.

Lol @the alcohol-not-so-anonymous

And Nelson  :( I know.... It sucks cuz I have no sink to wash things in.... And my Das Boot is packed away in a box in the container outside... We slowly started to bring things in yesterday...

Title: Re: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: Nit3h4wk C0uP3 on December 04, 2012, 07:48:23 PM
So I was thinking to use either bottle caps ex: 4 out of 5 caps... Or frequency of belches... Like a crappy beer could be a little sissy burp, and a really good beer could be a Barney belch from the Simpsons....  What do you guys think?

Title: Re: Re: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: CrackerTeg on December 04, 2012, 08:00:24 PM
The bottle caps idea seems better. The belches are too subjective.

Title: Re: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: gargantula99 on December 04, 2012, 11:39:47 PM
I vote for bottle caps.

Title: Re: The Beerologist thread.
Post by: HEcreated487 on December 05, 2012, 12:00:41 PM
Love these types of thread.  I vote for the bottle cap rating method, but I think we may need to distiguish what categorizes the various ratings (overall taste, after taste, flavor, body, hoppiness, etc.), as it still seems subjective to the drinker's pallette.  I would love to add to this, but getting the unordinary, non-standard, off-the-shelf beers here is costly.  Stupid shipping.  :D

Someone left this at our house, I love the label, very amusing! And it's one of those beers that isn't great, but you can't stop drinking it. There's something familiar about the smell and taste, but I can't figure it out!

I'd bet anything its based off sales and everyone with a drinking problem from MA and RI go there to buy alcohol. The number is falsely inflated by the low prices. Sorry to burst the bubble...

My living room is bigger than this dive, there's hardly any beer..and there's a board on the wall with food, but the bartender tells us there's no food.  (Don't think I'd trust it anyway) this band is too good for this place!

I love yuengling!

Country have you tried Yuengling Black and Tan?  That's a pretty good dark one.
Ive even had an actual Black and Tan with Guinness on top and Yuengling on bottom that was great.

As for the shitty yuengling... it may be because of your location.  I'm about an hour from the brewery and I know wont ship it anywhere that takes more than a day or two.  So to help demand they opened a second brewery in FL (IIRC) and I heard the quality/taste is just not up to par.

Eh, not a huge fan of Black and Tan either. Most of the stouts I drink are chocolate stouts.

Never heard of it.

I've had a saranak caramel porter before, it was really good

So did quite a bit of drinking over the past week.

Shock Top "End of the World"
2.5 caps.  I thought it would have been more flavorful, but all those spices were a little too subtle.

Shock Top "Lemon Shandy"
3.5 caps.  This was surprisingly good.  A hint of lemon on the onset, then a nice follow through of spices.  Very good!

Shadow's "Wild Blue" (Blueberry flavored)
2.0 caps.  I like the fact that it is 8% by volume.  This particular blend was very sweet, especially the follow through.  Full of flavour, but I had one and that was enough.  Let's just say that it's almost sweet enough to put on you morning pancakes :D

Shadow's "Wild Black" (Blackberry flavored)
3.5 caps.  I really liked this one over the "Wild Blue".  Again, 8% by volume and full of flavor.  The follow through was very favorable, much more "bitter" (due to the blackberry), but still very smoothe and no bite.  I am inclined to try the "Wild Red" (Raspberry flavored) now.

I love Shock Top :) the Raspberry Wheat in particular, I know fruit = girly, I don't care lol They have an IPA I haven't tried yet but that's because i've yet to meet an IPA that I like. Lemon Shandy is very good. Shock Top Pumpkin is good as well.

^^ Yep, definitely a fan of Shock Top as well, Denny.  I think you'll like the "Shadow's" brews as well

We got a variety pack of Shock top a couple weeks ago (belgian white, summer shandy, wheat ipa and raspberry wheat).  All were good and were enjoyed.

Wild Blue is good if you like fruity beers.  Just be careful with the 8%, my lightweight roomate found out the hard way and stained our sidewalk. :P

So I was at the bar the other day drinking Blue Moon drafts and this dude kept asking me why I was drinking ladies drinks.

A slice of orange in a draft beer makes it a ladies drink?!

Interested in seeing what you guys think...  Not that it will stop me from drinking Blue Moon, I love that beer.

Does this guy have a double axel truck with a set of silver gonads hanging from it? Lol IMO it's not a girly beer, and just because you have some class and add some citrus garnish/flavor doesn't make it girly either.

Agreed. That's how I got turned on to Blue Moon awhile back. I'll bet that guy's "man drink" comes in a red, white and blue can and has the initials PBR.

The guy is just an idiot and trying to be a tuff guy. I add stuff to the beer I brew and my co worker brews. He is just a guy that thinks he knows beer and he doesn't. People like them insult themselves by trying to be " smart "

Saw this on the shelf and decided to give it a go. It's ok. It's as if you were drinking a caramel apple. Picture soaking an apple in beer and then coating it in caramel. This is what that tastes like. It's like a dessert wine but not as frilly. I give it 2.5 caps.

The description on the back of the bottle was more entertaining than the beer itself. There was talk of nipples with mouse traps on them, and mouths being wet with banana. The beer belongs in the dirty section at the bookstore, the taste was ok, there was a faint banana, but I don't think it lived up to the hype. 2.5 caps.

This beer is serious business, it will whip your ass!! It tastes like there's whiskey, or some other esophagus burning agent inside. Good for a cold winter's night. I give it 3.5 caps for doing it's job!

Red Horse.  Reppin' the native land!   Refreshing, very smooth, slight fruit flavor.  And it's 7% by volume.  Solid 3.5 caps.  Could be 4 though.

Alpine Spring.  Slight citrus flavor.  Nothing very unique or out of the ordinary.  Overall, nice subtle flavors and body.  2.5 caps.

At $15 a bottle, you gets no case.

You will get a bottle at Z's BBQ though, if it's still available.

Our normal beer haunt is closed :( so I looked up a new one.. and I found...The Drinkery.. hidden under a music hall one town over in Londonderry, carrying 400 different types of beer, and a huge wine selection. There was also a friendly dog named Obie, as in Obie Wan...I think we'll be visiting this place from now on :)

Does anybody know where I can find a limited edition bottle of Jameson called "the urban escape"?

Title: Re: The Beerologist thread.

"The Jameson Great Urban Escapes bottle is now available in key international hubs across Europe, theAmericas, Gulf and Pacific Travel Retail."

First of all, that's a very beautiful well designed bottle   and second, the above statement is all I keep finding!!!! ARG! I'm on a mission to find this thing. It's not even on Egay, have you tried calling nearby liquor stores?

I think it's only found at duty Free stores in airports. I saw it in Seattle but they wouldn't sell it to me bc I was flying to Newark.

Has anybody tried third shift amber lager?

Enjoying it now.

Lets start with the no bullshit packaging and label:
The box is exactly the same. That drew me in.

Now the flavor. It is what you would expect out of a good lager. Its got a hint of bitterness to it but not overwhelming in any way. On days like today where it was a bit on the warm side, its actually very refreshing. I give it 3.5 caps.

Got a case of Long Trail Ale this week.  Def my favorite of the Long Trail lineup.  The sampler is good to if you guys see it.

Funny story about Long Trail, my dads friend moved up to Vermont a years ago (where the Long Trail brewery is).  They toured the brewery and asked the guys of they could buy a keg and take it with them.  The guys at the brewery got confused cause no one had ever asked them before (it was still a pretty new beer at this point).  So apparently my dad and his friend were the first people to take a keg of Long Trail beer out of the state of Vermont. :D

Time for a thread revival.

Spotted this brew today and decided to give it a try as I'm a huge fan of IPA's and I like to think I'm a rebel when I'm really not.
That said, it's a weak IPA. It doesn't have that hoppy punch IPA's are known for. Hell, Boston lager has more of that punch than this. It isn't a bad brew but it's a disappointing IPA. 2.5 caps is my rating.

Made a trip to our favorite beer cellar and got a random 6 pack. I liked this beer, slightly hoppy with a light aftertaste. I give it 3.5 caps. Trying a Schofferhofer grapefruit as I type. .. Review soon ;)

I tried a four loko for the first time this weekend.  Absolutely the most disgusting thing I've ever drank.  I took a few sips and poured the rest down the drain.

Its changed a lot since it was in the news a couple years ago. It was probably more awful then!

Holy resurrection time Batman! What else are we going to do with 6 foot snow banks and -8 wind chill? BEER! Now I've had Peak Organic Apricot and it was exquisite.  Winter session is OK, a little hoppy. It tastes better the more I drink it. I will not seek it out going forward. I give it 3 caps.

i believe 5 Caps is max? i would give the Great Divide Collete a 4 because it lives up to its label

"COLETTE is our homage to the saisons that Belgian farm workers have enjoyed for centuries. Brewed with barley, wheat and rice and fermented at high temperatures with a special blend of four different yeast strains, COLETTE is fruity and slightly tart, with a dry finish that makes it that rarest of treats — a beer as refreshing as it is complex."

Titan IPA a 2 1/2 max which was disappointing since i am a fan of Pale Ales
