Title: Stuck spark plug (solved) Post by: GNskates on March 07, 2011, 01:42:17 PM The other day i was going to change my spark plugs, so then i checked the plugs to make sure i needed to change them. i took them out successfully and checked all 4 and they are soon to be needed to be replaced. as im installing the first plug, the socket comes off the extension as i pull it out and i then go back and fight for 30minutes to retrieve it successfully. but then the rubber that is supposed to be inside the socket is stuck inside the well/tube around the spark plug, which left me to just drop the rest of the other 3 and tighten them back down without the rubber. the rubber is keeping me from getting the plug back out because its blocking my way of seizing the plug. i tried everything, wired hangars, picks and hooks to get it out.. knowing that i have work in the next hour i put everything back together and started the car. and it ran fine. no check engine light, nothing. I am a complete idiot for having this happen :'( . any suggestions or what not will be very helpful.

Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 12:27:45 AM nope, its in there good
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: cna on March 08, 2011, 12:45:39 AM Try some thin needle nose pliers if not take it to a mechanic shop am sure they can get it out for you
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 01:45:30 AM do you think i should spray wd40/motor oil in it to loosen it? im looking through other forums and they all say to do that. or maybe get a long enough needle nose to grip the spark plug and loosen it that way since im getting new ones anyways?
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: CrackerTeg on March 08, 2011, 09:30:52 AM You have absolutely no way of sliding the socket around the rubber boot? If the rubber boot is still around the plug as its designed to be, you should be able to put the socket on over it and remove the whole thing.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 11:19:23 AM The more is tried to the more it got deeper. Remember, i had to reassemble everything to get to work. And ill try again to get the socket around the rubber. And get a picture right after i get out of class.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: CrackerTeg on March 08, 2011, 11:50:14 AM Sounds good.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: Mike on March 08, 2011, 01:35:12 PM I would attepmt to pull the rubber out with a long thin pair of needle nose before spraying anything in there.

as you can see i attempted to do whatever i can to get this fucker out. the wd40 made it softer but still no movement Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: Mike on March 08, 2011, 06:56:57 PM Its like it expanded...
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: gargantula99 on March 08, 2011, 07:39:51 PM That's a tough one. I would say, use an x-acto blade to slice away some of the rubber, in vertical section. Then when you have a segment off, use the pliers to pull the rest out.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 09:20:50 PM Would that reach down to the rubber?
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: gargantula99 on March 08, 2011, 09:33:48 PM One of these.

Since it's coming from me, I would take it with a grain of salt. Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 09:40:17 PM I know what they are its just im not sure if itll reach down that far.isnt that almost as long as a pencil or just a bit longer?
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: gargantula99 on March 08, 2011, 09:44:03 PM about as long as pencil. but there's different holders for them. That's about the only thing I can think of.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 09:49:33 PM I guess Ill go looking around a bit more for tools thatll be usefull for this.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on March 08, 2011, 09:56:18 PM Hmmm, what if you get a dry/wet vac, get an attachment that will go over the hole, then try to suck the damn thing out? Just make sure you clean out the vac's tub before you do this, so you can find the thing again. :P
Not sure if it'll work, but hey, you've tried everything else, so what the hell! :eatthis: Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: gargantula99 on March 08, 2011, 09:58:36 PM I was actually thinking about that idea too. But I figured, if he already tried pulling it out with pliers and it didn't move, then a vacuum cleaner won't be able to help either.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: timot_one on March 08, 2011, 11:07:25 PM You may want to try locking forceps (kelly clamp). It's long and thin enough to reach in there to get it, and the locking mechanism makes it easier to get a good grip.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 11:11:41 PM Dont forget this rubber is hard as fuck. I was thinking of finding a long ass 15" radiator hook pick.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: timot_one on March 08, 2011, 11:12:56 PM Sure. I was just throwing out an idea. So, is this the rubber that's usually on the inside of the spark plug socket that's stuck in there?
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 11:17:51 PM Correct
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: timot_one on March 08, 2011, 11:23:30 PM Bummer. Does the socket have a warranty. You could have them recoup the expenses to have a mechanic get it out.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 08, 2011, 11:37:37 PM I had these tools for a while. And i dont have a warranty.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: Mike on March 09, 2011, 08:25:23 AM I would be slightly afraid that it might melt during an extended trip... Just a thought that was in my head and I figured I would share.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: CrackerTeg on March 09, 2011, 01:03:57 PM It kinda looks like it did already.
Title: Re: Stuck spark plug Post by: GNskates on March 09, 2011, 09:46:14 PM well good news guys, i finally got it out with in a hour with a small knife and knitting needles :D. :flip: what i used to suck out the chunks of rubber was straws duct taped around the vacuum. took time, but i finally got it all out. thank you guys for the tips.
