Title: COD 'Black Ops' Review & Chat
Post by: slipkord on November 09, 2010, 01:50:35 PM
I’m creating this thread because I just picked up Black Ops for PS3. This would be a good place for us to all chat about it, give our opinions on the game, and maybe play online.

If you have COD black ops please post what gaming system you have it for. I'm new to PS3, but I'm sure we all have a PIN or the like, post up those too.

Thanks

Jer, good choice on the PS3.  Its the most powerful gaming platform out there.  You should pick up some PS3 exclusives like God of War III to see what your system can do.  I'm playin BO online.  Tell me your PS3 user name and I'll add you.  So far game is good.  Got a few kinks to work out.  Sooo much better than that MW2 trash Activision has been pettling for the last year.

MW2 is good. I use my PS3 as a blu ray player. I don't think the online gaming comes close to Xbox Live.

People hating on PS3 online gameplay. They have stepped it up A LOT since it came out. I've owned both and yes the Xbox is better but the PS3 is not far behind.

I can't agree with that I own both, and have used both and they are night and day. No matter what on either platform this game is killing it.

You've played the same game on both platforms? What issues have you had on the PS3 with online gameplay?

But I have to agree with that last statement, the Black Ops is on point!

Mike doesnt have the game on both platforms, just that he has both 360/PS3

I played the game on PS3 over the weekend at a buddies house for a couple of hours. It's just not as smooth. Honestly the PS3 online is about where Xbox live was on the original Xbox. The two biggest things are cross gaming chat, and game invites.

I have to agree with Mike ... the xbox version is definitely smoother.  The reasons for this are well documented.  Game was designed for Xbox and the PS3 port is subpar, utilizing less than 50% of the PS3 processing capability.  Some say this is by design given that Microsoft pays Activision for semi-exclusivity rights.  There's a video floating around where a guy supposedly was emailed from an Activision employee who stated they submarined the PS3 version on purpose.  Don't know if that's factual, though.  Frame rate and resolution was REDUCED for the PS3 version even though the PS3 is a much more powerful system.  This goes back to the port comment and the simple fact that Treyarch didn't want to invest the time to utilize the PS3 hardware properly.  Dedicated servers vs host based system ... that's COD life on the PS3.  Never gonna change.

Frankly, none of that stuff bothers me too much.  Game is OK but the PS3 version is buggy as hell.  Can't keep a party together for more than a match before folks get kicked, etc, etc.  I had the opportunity to play the Killzone 3 Alpha/Beta (Killzone is a PS3 exclusive) and the "rough draft" of KZ3 was visually head and shoulders above Black Ops.  It even seemed less buggy.  To be honest, PS3 exclusives are where its at for me.  I want to fund the developers that appreciate what the system is capable of and utilize it.  $60 for a crappy port?  I'd rather burn my money.  Rent Gran Turismo 5 and revel in its beauty.

Xbox version is great. Multi player is off the hook purchasing upgrades is awesome, and there is far less camping. I have not visited the single player mode of the game.

Couldn't agree with you more unfortunately for PS3 this could become common place because Microsoft is "in bed" with alot of developers for obvious reasons. Not that I want to argue the "console war" but, I think Microsoft is setting themselves up to take over in the next generation. Currently all of the development seems to be toward Xbox live, and if Gaming follows into the Streaming (online Purchase) path that most of todays content (Music, Movies, etc.) is Microsoft is light years ahead. Xbox Live, Windows Live, Windows Media Center I just can't see Sony investing the Money into the PlayStation franchise when they have so many other areas the operate in. MS is all software, and I think that where this war will ultimately be won.

And the end of the Day Black Ops is awesome on either system. The 360 Version is less glitchy and smoother online but, game play is basically the same. It's very much like MW 2 without all the bull shit that drove me nuts!

I'm curious about the next gen xbox and how they will solve their short comings in disc storage space.  Since HD-DVD is dead, would they dare buy bluray rights from .. um .. Sony?  It will be interesting how it shakes out for sure.

Avoiding the console war element here, but I think xbox is the preferred platform for devs cause its kin to the PC so they are really coding 2 platforms not one.  Much more cost effective.  To unlock the true power of the PS3 you need to program differently.  I'm not too smart and dont understand the lingo, but I do know the xbox/pc speaks english and the PS3 speaks french from a programming standpoint.

The PS3 speaking French is going to be its downfall. They won't go to Blu Ray because that format is going to fall flat and the industry will be dominated by streaming movies. The problem that Sony is going to run into is being different. Games for the wii, PC, and Xbox are all similar, and obviously developers are going to continue to port games for PS3. There will be the 10 - 12 PS3 exclusive games but, from a content stand point that’s not enough. There is more Xbox only content than PS3 only content available, and that will continue as Microsoft continues to purchase developers, and franchises. As far as disk shortage I foresee a large hard drive and games being downloadable and played from the hard drive. This option is actually available in the current 360’s. I think we are a few years off from the next gen consoles but, imagine COD in 3D….

Disclaimer: These are all my opinions, and in no way fact.

eventually it will be streaming, but  first you need to convince 430 million americans that they dont need the physical presents of a disc. to actually own it. i agree it will be streaming, just were not near that time yet. people want to be able to hold disc and say looky looky. and another problem is, lets say you buy Saw 16 to stream, data goes bad, so if you save it on a hard drive sooner than later the file will corrupt.

Xbox 360 allows you to download content as many times as you want once you purchase it. It gets tied into your gamertag.

The service is a million miles better the PSN I have both systems so you can't claim its fan boyism. Xbox live is well worth the $60 a month.

i havent play xbox live in about a  year, but a buddy and i used to play modern warfare 1 on live all the time, and game play seemed the same just only real difference was 99% of the people have mics rather than like 25 % on ps3.

Streaming content is an interesting thought.  Not sure it feasible from a piracy standpoint.  I see lots of folks getting free games with that model.  I've heard the xbox is pretty hacked as it is, although you run the risk of a permaban from xbox live.  Can they brick your console as well?  PSN is underwhelming but its free.  It serves my purpose but I'm not a hardcore gamer.

BTW, the 1.04 BO patch was just released for PS3 and the game has gone from bad to horrid.  I'm on GT5 cause I cant stand all the disconnects, etc.  Kudos Treyarch!

well i like my psn just because something free is better then nothing free i just really like the controller gets the job done with out popping batteries in it all the time for wireless and the support for blue ray is nice since now they compatible with 3d blue-ray if your t.v supports it

thats true, i think my bias is because of the controller, i was to young to ever get a NES, i got a SNES when i was 5-9, and 9-13 had a playstation,n64,bought a ps2 at 14, and my buddy had an xbox, and i just could get use to the controller. i would bet if i was 6 and santa got me a 360 rather than a ps3, my bias might be xbox. i also suprised of the ps3 peeps in here, usually im the only one in my group of friends with a ps3

The PS3 isn't bad at all I just don't think they can keep up after this genearation. At some point they are going to improve PSN and charge for it anyway so the cost arguement will probably go out the window. That update actually helped with some issues on the 360 version although connecting to game has gotten a little worse. I notice that the knife is weaker, and the sniper rifles have become more arrurate/powerful.

All PS3 games are on bluray.  They hold a lot more data and are much more durable ... but you already knew that.  Maybe I missed the context of the question as I didn't state anything you didn't already know.

This isn't true... 98% of the games you are playing are ported over to the PS3 the graphics are not different.

Title: Re: COD 'Black Ops' Review & Chat
Post by: DV8mAn on December 22, 2010, 12:28:38 PM
I bet the only ones that come close to filling the bluray disc are PS3 exclusives.  GT5 is a massive game and I know FF is too.  They ported it over to xbox and it takes 3 discs to hold the data.  Other than exclusives, doubt any game comes close to filling the bluray disc.

Mike,
I stick with 2 basic classes.

1.  Famas with extended mag or dual mag
Scavenger Pro
SOH Pro
Hacker Pro

2.  AK47U with rapid fire
Scavenger Pro
SOH Pro
Hacker Pro

Thats it for me.  Commando is a great gun but seems like you run slower and ADS slower.  Dunno, maybe the physics are different in the PS3 version.

My girlfriend got this for me for Xmas and I just started playing it last week. I think I like MW2 better.

Zombie mode is a lot of fun, too bad I suck at it.

I have it for the 360, it's the only way to play a Call of Duty game.

Agree Justin.  Activision should just make it a xbox exclusive, and that's coming from a PS3er.  They put such little effort into the other gaming systems it shows and takes away from the game as a whole.  Its a great game on the xbox and a piece of shit on the PS3.

I didnt know that. I have the maps on xbl. They are okay they def. each provide a different type of game play.

Berlin wall = alot of long straight sightlines
kowloon = lots of buildings windows and doors at various levels. Alot of places to go.
stadium = a couple of dominant positions but, run and gun beyond that
The name of the last one escapes me but its def. Built with the long shot in mind.

The maps seem very complex over all, and are tough to play at first. After learning the angles and sight lines they are fun.
