Title: Front License Plate Options Post by: mnkyman on May 13, 2010, 01:51:38 AM Hey guys, I've having my front bumper repainted after the idiot at the inspection place somehow scraped the front of it during the "brake test"...I currently have my front plate on using the stock bracket, however, over the last couple years, parking on the street and such, people have bumped the plate and messed up the paint underneath the bracket as well, so I was going to have them fix that and fill the hole from the bracket while they are at it...so I was wondering what other mounting options are out there (pictures would be awesome too!) that don't mount directly to the front of the bumper. It just looks so much cleaner without it there
And yes, the front plate is required in TX ![]() Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: Mike on May 13, 2010, 07:42:08 AM I've seen people mount them off to one side but, its still mounted to the bumper.
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: timot_one on May 13, 2010, 08:08:35 AM Be a gangsta and put it on your dash.
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: CrackerTeg on May 13, 2010, 08:59:55 AM Or be even more gangsta and ziptie it to your passenger visor. Cop comes up and flip that bitch down while doing your gangsta lean.
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: sherker55 on May 13, 2010, 09:09:22 AM depending on your state, you can get a ticket for not having it permanentaly affixed to your front bumper, i.e. NJ
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: Lemonjelly on May 13, 2010, 09:51:52 AM I have the grill craft grill and have my license plate ziptied off to the side on the grill.

Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: jdmaccord on May 13, 2010, 10:25:58 AM just paint your tag on your bumper so you can tell the cops that the plate number is there and they never said it had to be an actual plate
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: Anthony212 on May 13, 2010, 12:21:53 PM I have mine ziptied to my bumper where the lower grille would be, it looks like my car is eating the license plate is like on an angle now. You can always buy a license plate relocate kit.

Ya maybe I'll just fab something up out of L brackets, reusing the stock bolt locations....I remember seeing a thread years ago, where someone took the stock bracket, and flipped it upside down and cut it up a little and made it mount where the lower grill would be

I think it's illegal everywhere. I was just messin' with ya Sam. You can buy relocation brackets also. LOL. That gives me a couple ideas though. I'll fabricate something at work out of aluminum. Maybe I can come up with my own design and begin selling it for $19/ea! Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: mnkyman on May 18, 2010, 08:09:09 PM everyone who has fabbed up their own brackets, could you please post pictures?
I have an idea of what I want to do, but want to see what you all have before I go at it. Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: b_beau_09 on May 18, 2010, 10:55:05 PM ^just click on my profile page.. you can see the two L brackets kind of in the "mugshots" section. it's literally just two "L" brackets from home depot... $5 maybe? then bolted onto the underside of that opening on the bumper. you can put a little bit of foam tape on the bottom edge of your license plate, as it will probably hit the bottom part of the opening, so that it doesn't scratch the paint. you can even paint the L brackets prior to installation so they aren't seen as easily. if you want more detailed pictures of the whole thing let me know, I'll try to get some for you.

I think i'm going to try to fab up something to mount to the stock bolt locations...basically look the same as a stock bracket, but it will be sitting in the opening gap rather than on the bumper itself Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: MTsixspeed on May 19, 2010, 09:15:32 PM Just don't block too much air from getting in though that opening and to your radiator.
Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: sherker55 on May 19, 2010, 09:38:33 PM I don't get the purpose of relocation from center...it makes it look out of square

Some cars even come with them off to the side from the factory Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: timot_one on May 20, 2010, 12:46:59 PM Quote from: "sherker55" I don't get the purpose of relocation from center...it makes it look out of square There are 2 reasons. The more common reason is because of how it looks. The less common reason is because the plate is blocking the radiator or intercooler reducing air flow. Quote from: "mnkyman" if you are referring to my idea, i'm still going to have it center, just in that gap That's not a good idea Sam. You're basically blocking your radiator and reducing it's efficiency and effectiveness by doing that. I'd recommend another alternative that will not affect your engine cooling. I found this link through yours: http://gominigo.com/NHLPB-main.html
This makes me wish our cars had the tow hook point in the bumper! Title: Re: Front License Plate Options Post by: mnkyman on June 02, 2010, 08:33:37 PM Quote from: "timot_one" I found this today. Like someone posted on that site, it's made of steel and will rust if you don't take preventative measure.
