How is the Scratch Doctor product? I've never tried it but, I have a couple of scratches that I need removed.

Well, for scratches on your clear coat, Scratch Doctor works miracles. But just something to note, it takes out a little bit of your clear coat, so only use it when absolutely necessary and don't use it too often.  Also, it will not work on scratches that go beyond your clear coat and into your base coat or primer.

Nothing will work on scratches that go into your base coat. The idea of how it works is just like anyother scratch remover. More abrasive than polish less abrasive than wet sanding. As a product does it preform well. Have you ever used scratch ex? Is it similar?

Windex (for interior paneling)
Black hole
Stoners invisible glass (for the glass)
No More Dust wheel cleaner.
Klasse all in one.

Yes, it performs really well.  As for ScratchX, I do not know.  I haven't tried it, but I've heard good things about it as well.

Yeah it's basically a miracle in a can. LOL! And it's good for people like who me dont have the time for a full full detail. And the best part is that is works on just about every surface, even the glass.

Glass and wheels too! It really makes wheels sparkle. It is especially good at cleaning the barrels but of course that requires pulling the wheels off of the car.

Got to's in no specific order---------

Dura Gloss car wash
Poorboy's Spray & Wipe (couldn't be without it)
Wet Paint Glaze
Menzerna Intensive Care polish
Menzerna Final Polish
Duragloss Aquawax (actually a sealant)
Duragloss #105 sealant
Poorboy's Bold & Bright (tires, interior plastic)
Sprayway glass cleaner (cheap, tint safe)
Detailer's clay (whatever is on sale)
Stoner's More Shine (tires, engine, wheel wells)
Porter Cable random orbital buffer
Cyclo dual orbital buffer
Lake Country buffer pads
Optimum Spray Wax

Where can Poor Boys Products be purchased I've been looking for something new to try on the interior. Also, are there any interior cleaners that help to reduce the collection of dust?

Poor Boys depending on where you live can be found at random auto supply stores. In my area their products dont exactly pour off the shelves but I can sometimes find it. As for the interior dust I can recommend a specific product but I think you have to look for something that's static resistant which is what causes the dust build up.

I've never seen Poor Boys stuff in the New England Area. I'm going to have to look for something anit-static.

The real reason I know about the static thing is because of my tv. Ash and I bought a 42" plasma about a month ago as well as a black glass tv stand for it, and surround sound. Well the plasma as well as all the other electronics create so much static electricity within one day of havin everything set up my glass shelves on the stand looked like they had been sitting there for a year without being dusted.

Have you found a product to use on your glass shelves I have the same dust issue around my components and I've never even thought of the static adding to the problem but, it makes sense!

I've never seen Poorboy's anywhere except on line.
http://www.poorboysworld.com/ (http://www.poorboysworld.com/)

I'm not aware of any interior products that are anti static. I use a small version of the California duster on the interior to keep dust down.

EDIT!! I just discovered this about Aerospace 303, one of my favorite products for the dash and other areas:
Routine treatment with 303 can virtually eliminate UV induced fading and cracking. 303's premier product, 303 Aerospace Protectant, is the world's most powerful sunscreening treatment for vinyl. It is water-based, contains no petroleum solvents or silicone oils, restores lost color and leaves a surface that repels dust, dirt and oil-based stains.

Finish Kare #425 can be used on the paint, glass, plastic, Plasma & LCD screens, etc. and is anti static. It REALLY adds bling to any finish. Not meant for dashboards or porous items.

I've been sticking with the NXT line of products.

I use:

NXT wash
California Water Blade
Absorber shammies
NXT 2.0 Liquid Wax
Meguiars Rubber/Vinyl protectant for the interior
Stoner's Invisible Glass
NXT or Stoner Tire shine
Lint Roller for the black upholstery
Swiffer Dusters for the dash

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?

I must admit to using one but, only on the windows. Works great when there is frost and it defrost so you don't get the damn water spots on the glass. I'm never been brave enough to use it on my paint. Although we've used it on the wifeys camry with no real ill effects.

Don't have a really long list but here the are:
Wet paint
Pinnacle Leather and Vinyl Cleaner - this stuff cleans amazingly well.  Better than the peoples and meguires stuff I tried first.
Pinnacle Leather Conditioner - works well and smells great too.
303 aerospace protectant

That's about it

yea, i use mothers gold carnuba as well, i'm a fan of the gloss level it brings out, but it doesn't seem to last long.
i mainly use mothers products and some meguiars.  other stuff i get from my connection where i used to work (detailing department at a cadillac dealership)

I have been using the waterblade for a while now. It really helps to get the bulk of the water off of your car. This makes a big difference if you live in a warm climate because you can towl off the remaining water before it can dry. Given the blade is medical grade silicone I don't see how it could harm your paint.

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?
Post by: Abailey4 on February 19, 2009, 12:18:35 PM
As long as the water blade is used on a car that has a lot of water on it it's fine.  I've seen people use it on cars that are barely wet and you hear this awful screaching noise because of the dry friction. It's leaves real bad surface scrapes when that happens.

Post by: b_beau_09 on February 19, 2009, 12:28:45 PM
^ if any contaminent gets on that blade (i.e. rocks, dirt), it will scratch the hell out of your paint, if you drop it, throw it away.

Hey, you guys were talking about Wet Paint.  I went to their site and read that it was a polish glaze.  So, I'm assuming it's a polish and a glaze, I may be wrong, but that's why I'm asking.  Is Wet Paint a polish, glaze, or a type of sealant?  I asked Tim and he said it was a sealant.  Some clarification would be nice :) Thanks.

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?
Post by: Mike on February 19, 2009, 12:41:52 PM
Wouldn't the blade just wipe clean/rinse clean? Also I think most people use wet paint after wax so I'm going to assume most use it as a sealant.

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?
Post by: b_beau_09 on February 19, 2009, 12:46:23 PM
it would.. unless the contaminent made any kind of cut in the blade, which isn't hard to do on that type of material..

and yea, you'd use the wet paint after wax, as a sealant.  atleast thats what i remember reading on old g7a.

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?
Post by: Mike on February 19, 2009, 12:48:12 PM

It's actually an "all in one" product for lack of better terms. It will clean without marring and leave a layer of sealant behind for protection. If used on a clean surface with a buffer it will polish and remove minor marks, spider webs, etc. while leaving sealant behind. It's actually quite amazing as many here can attest to. I buy it by the case because (1) I go through quite a bit of it and (2) it's less expensive per unit.

I hope that answers your question.

Here are a couple of pics of what it can do safely. I did this by hand using about 1/3 more product than usual. No marring of the paint when done. Mind you this is an extreme example I did to show what is possible and extra care was taken. I've used the product for five years and know what I can & can't do. I'm not recommending others with less experience use it on a car this dirty. Sorry about the poor lighting but you get the idea.

Frankly any metal polish and some terrycloth towels that you can throw away when done (black city). Depending on how stained the tips are it may take several applications. If they are too far gone you can only expect to make them look better, not like new. If they are really awful then steel wool or aluminum foil can do wonders.

Title: Detailing Products That I Regularly Use
Post by: Deep Gloss on February 21, 2009, 10:34:02 PM
I always get asked what products I really like, if you want to read through my ramblings I  have included most of my go-to products below.. At the end of this I have included the url’s for the main shopping pages for the mfg of the products referenced. FYI: Surf City has free shipping and Duragloss have a flat $5 rate.

I have quite a few shampoos and in a pinch I have also went to the local Auto Zone and got some Meguiars Gold Class shampoo and it works great. My favorite regular strength maintenance wash is Durgloss 901/902.. The smaller portion is 901 the larger size is 902 – same shampoo.

For shampoo that is stronger, to strip old wax sealant of to ensure a clean starting point I will use Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss

I use a chennile micro fiber wash mitt like this (can be found at local stores as well)
http://www.chemicalguys.com/CAR_WASH_MI ... ic_493.htm (http://www.chemicalguys.com/CAR_WASH_MITT_MICROFIBER_p/mic_493.htm)

Glass Cleaner-Surf City  Clearly Better

Pre wash -treatment for paint and engine – it strips off old protection and cuts throughg grease = Surf City Grime Destroyer

Duragloss %501 to seal rims – makes brake dust wash off with no chemicals just soapy water.

Surf City Beyond Steel for regular duty rim cleaning

Danase Assasin Tire cleaner for heavy duty rim cleaning  but you have to be smart how you use  this because it’s HF acid based….

P21s Wheel Gel cleaner for cars with high end /braking components.

Surf City Tire Pro tire dressing… Not shine, just a deep rich matte black. It’s water based so no sling and it will not discolor the tires. As with all water based products, the longevity is not as long as silicone based products BUT those products sling and can cause the rubber compound in the tires to discolor.

Micro fiber waffle waves to dry

Micro fiber glass thief for windows (e-shine.ca)

A wet / dry shop vac with different crevice tool attachments, may as well get the heavy duty hose that is longer and thicker.

Interior trim cleaner, protectant, UV inhibitor, Aerospace 303 and Surf City Dash Away… Both are an AIO (all in one) product. Surf City is less expensive and in my observations perform the same.

To clean the heater core I use 1z Klima Cleaner

For leather I use Leather Master (3 step system) twice a year and then for regular maintenance (one step products) I use Zaino or Surf City with the latter being cheaper.

Any stubborn stains on exterior painted panels, faux chrome trim, chrome, stainless is Duragloss 501.. Just rub in into the area on concern, friction is good.. Obviously surface needs to be squeaky clean.

Stoners more shine to dress wheel wells.

Paint correction procucts below  to be used by machine & are listed in order of most to least aggressive:
Meguiars M105 Ultra Cut Compund
Menzerna Power Gloss Compound
Menzerna Super Intensive Polish
Menzerna 106ff
Menzerna 85rd
3M Ultra Fina
Quick Detailer] In bulk, Finish Kare 425, in consumer sizes Surf City Speed Demon Detailer (carnauba based) or Surf City Hot Rod Detailer (sealant based)

I know most people just want to know what wax and sealant is best but to be honest the wax and/or sealant application is funny.. I can add Simonize or Turtle Wax to a car that has had the proper prep work and hat it will look better than a car with a coat of $30,000 Zymol Solaris…

I think I covered most of  the stuff that I use repeatedly and really can’t see being without..

Duragloss.com

Chemicalguys.com

Surfcitygarage.com

Detailersdomain.com(Leather Master Products & Menzerna ,   3M and 1z products)

Finish Kare 425: fk1usa.com

Jason and I exchanged PM's over what he used to clean the interior of that ram, and he mentioned a "hot water extractor" not sure if that's the same as steam cleaning but, I figured it might add a little insight to your question while we wait for his response.

^No it's not the same as a steamer.  It's a machine that looks like a vacuum and combines hot water and a cleaning solution to clean and soak whatever you're cleaning and then the vacuum portion extracts the water and solution. We've got one at work that we use for reallyyyyy shitty interiors. I think it cost around $400-500 dollars.

Danase Assasin Tire cleaner for heavy duty rim cleaning but you have to be smart how you use this because it’s HF acid based….

what does HF stand for?

would you use that particular product on a rim thats never been cleaned at all before? can you use it on all material types of rims (alloy, machine finish, chrome, etc...)?

HF= Hydroflouric which is a acid if I remember correct.

Hydro flouric Acid

Jason, I recall that you mentioned using a steam cleaner for your interior.  Which one do you use?  Do you have any suggestions for a normal guy like me?

I use both.. Steamer to disolve solids and then the extractor to spray hot water and suck it all up..

For the "Avg Joe" I would recomend a spray bottle of carpet cleaning solution, a spray bottle of hot water, a carpet brush and a wet/dry vac.

Dry brush the carpet
Vac
Spray the cleaning solution
brush carpet
let dwell
lightly spray with hot water
brush carpet
use wet/dry vac to suck everything out
Use towel with downward pressure on carpets to remove residual moisture

^No it's not the same as a steamer.  It's a machine that looks like a vacuum and combines hot water and a cleaning solution to clean and soak whatever you're cleaning and then the vacuum portion extracts the water and solution. We've got one at work that we use for reallyyyyy shitty interiors. I think it cost around $400-500 dollars.
^^ What he said 8-)

Glad you found it of use..

Yep, if yoy use the Zep traffic lane cleaner carpet cleaning solution you will be doing fine... Just don't over saturate the carpet. If you have very troublesome areas another OTC (over the counter) product that can be found at Home Depot is Folex...

I have not heard of it nor used it. I use Amazing Roll Off......it may be better, it may be worse, I don't really know. Excel Detail is a place I trust so take it from there. You also have to figure this out: Do I need a little bottle or do I need a gallon? Work out the cost per ounce with shipping (on various products) and go from there. For me Amazing Roll Off is the best of its type and is worth the extra $$. For you? Maybe not. The stuff in the video might even be better. Try it and let us know.

Title: Re: What are your "go to" detailing products?

I just may have to try some.  I figure I can use it on the rest of the household's vehicles that dont get washed that often. Then I wont have to waste my tire shine cuz they all drive vehicles with huge tires. As a comparison how much does the Amazing Roll Off go for and what does it come with Rick? Sorry if you've already mentioned it already in this thread or another.

Just google it to price shop. I've found it cheaper at Marine Stores than online detailers. What does it come with? Nada, nothing, nary a thing. You'll need a trigger spray bottle to dilute it and a scrubby brush. It is QUITE strong so use it in an open area and don't get it in your eyes because they will look like this   (that's the Roll Off I'm talking about)

Oh, Mike I also ordered some of that Finish Kare #425 that Rick told us about earlier in this thread. The one that's anti-static... It also comes with a free sample of your choice, I got #108 which is for the engine bay I believe.

Derrick,
The #425 will knock your dick in the dirt! It is short lived but the look it adds (to a clean surface) is just Wowzers! You don't need very much so keep that in mind. A sprayer with a very fine mist will save you a lot of product and give the same results. Spray some on an area and wipe it very briskly until it disappears and you feel the slickness occur......you're done, move on to another area.

It certainly did!!!! I cleaned my tv stand and tv with it about 5 days ago and there is just a really light film of dust. Usually after this amount of time after using a regular cleaner it's covered in dust like it was never cleaned. I also used it this weekend on the windows for the Sentra and the Accord and it's lovely. Oh and the added bonus is it smells like bubble gum! I didnt get a chance to use the #108 for engine detailing yet though.

Also got a chance to use that Tuff Shine stuff as well.  Extremely impressed!! I've never used a tire shine before that actually dries to the tire.  After about 5 minutes you can touch it with your hand and there's no residue or stickiness at all! And it gives either a natural look or a very nice shine depending on how many coats you apply.  I took before and after pics but haven't uploaded em yet.

You talking about on the paint or glass.  I did see that you can use it as a clay lubricant but just wanna be clear on exactly what you're talkin about.

ON THE PAINT my man, the fact that is works well on glass is just gravy on the side. It's way too expensive to use as clay lube, it's a quick detailer designed for painted surfaces that happens to work well on a number of things.

Use it on practically the whole exterior except tires of course. You know the black plastic at the base of the windshield? Turns it beautiful! Windshiled wipers....not the blades, returned to like new. Wheels, black plastic, and on & on. Once again it is for use on clean surfaces, light dust is okay.

Hey Rick, I was just thinking, I'm about to get our rims out of storage to put them back on. So of course I'm gonna clean em up first. I was wondering if and how well the Finish Kare 425 would work on the rims especially because of it's anti-static qualities. I was thinking it could possibly keep down brake dust a lil, even though we dont get much anyway anything and every lil thing helps.

I was clueless as to the number of applications Finish Kare 425 could be used for I will by purchasing this asap. On the vehicle exterior you just use it as like a "mist, and wipe"?

It may help but it would have to be used quite often. If given the choice I would use WP, the wheels get just as slick as paint does and are very easy to clean when needed. Try both and see which works best for you. Either way I would use WP first on the barrels and the exterior "showy" side.

That is correct and quality microfiber towels are a must. Some of the things I use it for (which is why I get it by the gallon) are:
1. Car
a. paint
b. glass.
c. black plastic
d. chrome or chromed/plastic
e. clear cover over speedo/stereo
2. reading glasses
3. furniture
4. plasma/laptop screens/regular TV screens
5. mirrors/glass doors

.........and more. That's all I could think of at the moment, there's more but my old fart brain is refusing to work today.

Mike actually posted a thread about their products a few weeks ago.  They just started selling their stuff in normal auto retail stores like Pep Boys and Advanced Auto parts so it's a lil easier to try their products now that you dont have to order online unless your area was left out.  I actually picked up some of their Dash Away last weekend even though I've yet to use it and I need to get some of their leather stuff(Voodoo or something like that).

I checked every Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, and O'Reillys in my area a little while after Mike started that thread. This was a total of six stores, my town sucks so we probably won't get any. I'll probably just go ahead and order it online. Have any of you used the dirt catcher that goes at the bottom of the bucket? It sounds like it would work well, so I might order that as well.

Glass and wheels too! It really makes wheels sparkle. It is especially good at cleaning the barrels but of course that requires pulling the wheels off of the car.

Got to's in no specific order---------

Dura Gloss car wash
Poorboy's Spray & Wipe (couldn't be without it)
Wet Paint Glaze
Menzerna Intensive Care polish
Menzerna Final Polish
Duragloss Aquawax (actually a sealant)
Duragloss #105 sealant
Poorboy's Bold & Bright (tires, interior plastic)
Sprayway glass cleaner (cheap, tint safe)
Detailer's clay (whatever is on sale)
Stoner's More Shine (tires, engine, wheel wells)
Porter Cable random orbital buffer
Cyclo dual orbital buffer
Lake Country buffer pads
Optimum Spray Wax

Duragloss #105 is listed as a polish... just wondering if it actually differs in any way from a sealant and how long it lasts....

forumula 113 exterior detail wax
beadX (made by 113) detail spray (some of my favorite stuff on earth)
Adam's interior vinyl polish
Back to Black (for the engine detail)
mothers mag for exhaust tips/engine
good ol' soap and water for the rims with a wire brush

DG #105 is a sealant confirmed by Duragloss. Companies use buzz words that will click with the average person. Think about Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax.........it contains ZERO wax. Joe Average goes "Oh Boy a new wax" and buys it.....it's also a synthetic sealant. #105 can last from 3 to 6 months depending on a bazillion factors including how well it was applied in the first place.

Okay, so I tried some Surf City Garage Barrier Reef wax and I must say, it's well worth the money, especially if you're on a budget.  The wax is easy to apply and remove.  You also end up with a deep gloss afterwards. I love it. I also tried the Meguiar's Gold Class wax last week and for some reason it's a pain in the ass to remove.  Any ideas?  May it have anything to do with the fact that my car is new?  Or is it just my waxing technique?

You're likely using too much. Applying to a hot surface can also make it a bear to remove. Apply it so thin that you have to strain to see it on the paint. More is not better.

+2 all you need is enough wax to create a slight haze on the paint surface. I used to hate waxing because I used WAY too much wax.  Now that I've learned, waxing is a piece of cake...and should not take too much elbow grease.

manzerna deep gloose compound, yellow and green pad, then menzerna 85d i think with green pad (LLC pads), and then i think black with some finishing touches

I think you mean Menzerna Power Gloss compund...

Yellow pad is VERY agressive.. I cant imagine an anything more than an orange pad would be needed (if that). The next thing is that to jump from a compound to 85rd will not work. Compounds have such aggresive abrasives that they create micro marring of their own. 85rd has VERY LITTLE cut and cant remove the micro marring Power gloss created. Power Gloss is some agressive stuff (think rocks in a bottle).

An option would be Meguiars 105 Ultra Cut compund... this cuts great like a compound should but finishes off so much better than Power Gloss... You prob could use a white pad and get great correction and then go to a medium polish (like SIP on white) and then 85rd on black pad. If the 105 on white pad doesn't start you off right then the entire game plan needs to be changed.

Always do a test spot, do all the steps you have planned out on that test spot and inspect. If it doesn't look like you want to need to adjust your plan accordingly. By doing this you save yoruself from doing the entire car only to not like the results.

So in short, I think your prob is that you started off VERY agressive and went straight to a pad/polish with very little cut so you didn't remove the micro marring your 1st step induced

Holy shit Justin!!  Are you sure it's a wire brush?

yes, its sharp hardened steel with millions of wires that shoot flames off of the brush.

no.  its not an actual metallic wire brush, but with soft "wire looking" bristles that come off it and fit right between my spokes.  i figured you guys would be keen enough to know i wouldn't use an actual wire brush.  I've been using it since i got the car on my OEM wheels but don't use it on the summer wheels because that works just fine with a sponge.  they're ridiculously easy to keep clean

Menzerna kicks arse.. Only reason I mentioned Meguiars M105 Ultra Cut Compund is because it cuts fast and hard and finishes out with much less self induced micro marring than power gloss which means you need to do less follow up clean up work...

If you are breaking down your products correctly by using the above steps you should be fine

Jumping from a HEAVY compund with an AGRESSIVE pad to a pad with medium cut and polish with VERY little cut is the problem...
