Title: My LED projects, LED tail lights, interior lights, other
Post by: AV6NHBP6SPD on February 07, 2009, 08:16:40 AM
Started my custom LED tail lights

using red/orange Lumileds leds (hpwt-dh00 bin j16,j25,j22 and h34)
2 rows of leds (120 leds per side. not including backup leds and turn signals)
bottom and top row for brake and running lights
middle row 20 leds will be used as rear foglights and come on with front fogs
Turn signal will be in middle of tail where its clear section for backup lights. sorta like some bmw 5 series have red led turn signals
that will be 48 leds on each side, running at max curent(60-70ma regulated with voltage regs(sharp)
backup lights will be on same section
they will have 54leds at 2 or 3 different angles.
there will be maybe 9 or so facing to sides like turn signals

here is pics of almost completed tail light

lens on
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t55/sy272004/Projects/LED%20taillights/IMGP8762.jpg)
you can see where i put 35% tint film on and it didnt change brightness of leds
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t55/sy272004/Projects/LED%20taillights/IMGP8770.jpg)

as you might notice middle strip(turn signal) is "wierd", not all leds are visible from same angle, that was done on purpose so turn signal would be visible from wider angle, there are 3 sections and they are mounted at 3 different angles
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t55/sy272004/Projects/LED%20taillights/IMGP8743.jpg)

this what it should look like when both sides are done
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t55/sy272004/Projects/LED%20taillights/tails.jpg)

comparison. same camera settings for both pics, left is dimmest setting, right is highest setting (60mA)

more pics
http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t55/sy272004/Projects/LED%20taillights/

backup lights (possibly some blue and red leds for strobes)
54+ 5-chip leds (there will be about 9 or 12 leds facing to the sides)
backup lights gona be insane, thats about 1000 lumens per side (running at 3.8V and 90mA, or 874 at 3.6v at 90mA, thats asuming leds are about 75 Lumens/Watt)
mounted backup leds on board with 2 versions, not sure which ill go with.

question: what should creep4 be run at? on spec sheet it says 3.6v-4.6v
this will be for backup lights only (probably for strobes as well)

i heard ppl run them at 80mA, at what Fv (3.6 or 4v)?, they will be on sharp voltage reg so i guess max is 4V per string of 3

Awesome work Misha. Those turn out great.

Looks good Misha.  I hope you can get those tail lights to have sequential turn signals.  That would be awesome.  I also love the lights in the bottom of your door panels.  I need to do that to my car.  I have about 40 superflux LED's that will hopefully find a home in my door panels one day.  Maybe even in my overhead dome light too.

Post by: AV6NHBP6SPD on February 08, 2009, 10:15:02 AM
not doing sequential turns as i decided. one reason is because turn signal leds are at 3 different angles so it will look wierd, but i will probably still order 4 sets of parts to make sequential controllers. it took me 3 hours yesterday just to figure out how to wire PWM and sharp regulator together, and thats with Daves schematics.

so far about 40 hours. on one tail. couse first one always takes long time. second you just copy everything so not much R&D

i might consider selling boards based on todays tests. i think they are too bright. and if thats the case then id rather use pure red leds since it will be bright enough with little different design for turn signal part

Title: Re: My LED projects, LED tail lights, interior lights, other
Post by: timot_one on February 12, 2009, 10:52:36 AM
Are you using a PWM to dim them?

Title: Re: My LED projects, LED tail lights, interior lights, other
Post by: AV6NHBP6SPD on February 12, 2009, 11:33:19 AM
yes. combination of PWM and sharp 12V reg. pretty much same thing as Daves optidrive which i ordered yesterday since its easier to do then riging up what i did. and now that i think of it. he is using 15 step pot to controll brightness so it will be easier to use, im gona use what ihave now for tails for my front turn signals and make ptidrives for tails when they come in and i still need to order other supplies that are not included with optidrive

Post by: AV6NHBP6SPD on February 12, 2009, 06:32:11 PM
did some testing. they are bright. with tail tint it will be perfectly bright, just dont like turn signal very much couse leds are at 3 different angles

i might be changing my mind about turn signals. i might be using top and middle row for turns and top and bottom for brakes if that will be possible
or
top and bottom row for all 3 functions with Daves optidrive

oh oh 13 posts, today is Friday 13th, cant be good lol

^^ was gona say why you need it since you have sedan.
What about $200 shipped(thats price for ppl i know)? that would include Optidrive(controle module) you can wire it so top and bottom functions as brake/turn and running light or just wire it so only middle strip can function as turn only

there are 180 leds in each light

leds alone are $90
optidrive modules are about $20 each for parts only (boards dont come ready to go. you have to get components, solder them onto optidrive board)
PC boards $20
so thats 150 in parts
labor it took me at least 15 hours to do each board

didnt try, but it shouldnt be hard. just a lot of work, keep in mind its not gona be cheap. around $300-400. in mine at end ill be around 80 hours of work.

plus its PITA to take tail lights apart couse they are plastic welded

Chris is only one i know with sedan led tails, search for 05 accord led tails on youtube

but i already have couple jobs i would have to do after mine (my friends 6th gen(maybe 2 sets), and one of guys at work Cadillac)

making boards might be cheaper then doing whole tail light as a retro. then you can put them in

Post by: timot_one on April 15, 2009, 03:53:20 PM
I was planning on making boards for the tail lights actually.  I'm not that concerned with the retrofit of the tail lights, I'm more concerned with having controllers and power supplies that will do what I want.  I think Keith and I will try and build something though.

what i meant if i just do boards and will not be responsible installing them
boards + probably 2 daves optidrives unless whole led set up will be less then 2amps

mounted backup leds on board with 2 versions, not sure which ill go with.

question: what should creep4 be run at? on spec sheet it says 3.6v-4.6v
this will be for backup lights only (probably for strobes as well)

i heard ppl run them at 80mA, at what Fv (3.6 or 4v)?, they will be on sharp voltage reg so i guess max is 4V per string of 3

worked more on mirror lights and headlight turn signal. replaced red/orange leds that i originaly planned with amber couse red/orange might be too red to be legal so im going with amber. hope i have enough amber once

Misha any update on the 03-05 Sedan tail lights w/ LED's? that's my final mod for my exterior...

Misha, have u considered changing the 3rd brake light on the 03-05 with LEDS?  I figured this would be the easiest mod if I ever attempted...

Also, the original guide on v6performance calls for just the LED+resistors (calculated from http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz (http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz)).  Are your new projects based on the same components (what's "Dave's optidrive?")
I'm thinking I'll be using these LEDs (http://cgi.ebay.com/20-PCs-5mm-5-Chips- ... 1|294%3A30 (http://cgi.ebay.com/20-PCs-5mm-5-Chips-0-5W-Red-SuperFlux-LED-100mA-45Kmcd_W0QQitemZ220411036700QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335185841c&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|293%3A1|294%3A30)) for the 3rd brake light.

TIA!

wasnt realy considering since oem spoiler has led 3rd brake light. but. if you want to do something then i would consider getting philips superflux leds (thats what used by oem manufacturers.)
original guide is for interior where reliability is not as important as safety lights,  Dave is guy on Hidplanet who makes circuit board for controlling brightness on tail lights but you only need it if you using lights for dual purpose (running and brake)
3rd brake light doesnt need it, i would recomend to use voltage regulator which keeps constant 12V to your leds, this is safer and not effected by voltage spikes that could damage leds after a while.

i still use ebay leds but only for white, everything else i use philips lumileds or cree p4 leds.

by the way, those ebay once are ok but quality might be great, red is only used with clear lense. for red lenses red/orange type leds are used, they apear red through red lens but almost twice as bright as pure red leds, but you not gona find this kind on ebay

have to find and post pics of 3rd brake light i did for my friends prelude

Thanks for the quick reply, it cleared things up a bit.

Where did you purchase the lumileds? I'd rather go with trust than risk ebay.

The prelude - did it require a dremel to take the lens off? I'm guessing since it resides in the interior it shouldn't.

One more... Radioshack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2062600 (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062600)) has a +12 V regulator @ 1amp.  Does this mean I don't need resistors or do I need to some how modify the calculations from led.linear1?) Sorry I'm not a engineer... just picking up bits as I go along.

Thanks again =)

u need voltage reg , it does not replace resistors. you will need resistors still.

usualy you can get leds from HID planet, but if you dont need a lot, im sure you can buy some from me, they are .40cents each (red/orange), i did get radio shack voltage regs but didnt use them, got voltage from Dave again (Sharp regulators) but radioshack is fine for what you doing. needed Sharp couse of circuit board design

figure out how many leds you need and how you gona make your brake light

no didnt had to dremel anything in his light, it all comes apart, just plastick clips, just like our brake light, ill post pics when i get home if i dont forget

So I pulled out my third brake like, and it seems like I can fit a perfboard 22mm x 211 mm in there.  At 7.62mm each, I can fit 27.6 Superflux LEDs next to each other.  I'm guessing this is not realistic, so I'm thinking 24 LEDs across instead.  Using the calculator at 12v source, 2.5 forward voltage, 55 mA forward current, I should make 6 arrays of 4 LEDs each and a resistor of 39 ohms 1/4 watt.  In your experience, do you think this is reasonable?

Mebbe I'll get 24? And get one of those cool perf boards you have that's black/silver instead of the orange-brown one from Radioshack.

get 1/2W resistors, little safer. each led takes up 3x3 hole space, you might not be able to put them side by side but 4 side by side should works fine, black and silver i did it myself with paint and sharpie, behind light i doubt you gona see anything but id paint it black anyway on mounting side of leds so its kinda blackhoused

I was thinking of putting all 24 in one row, and wiring them in 6 series of 4 LEDs each. Wires would be above and below the row of LEDs.  Prob going to go out to RadioShack today and pick up a perfboard.  Do you have LEDs and a voltage regulator on hand that i may be able to mooch off of you?

i have leds but you better get voltage regs from radio shack since im sure they are cheaper then from me
