Title: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 12, 2009, 03:21:52 PM Hey guys. Me again. I noticed that my car in the morning makes almost no noise when it's cold but when it starts to get warmer and eventually gets to temperature I hear a loud clack clack clack noise and it's like metal againts metal. Does my engine need to adjust the valves or is this normal? I really don't know much about the past life of my car since it was preowned and I got it at 64k. My car now has reached 71k and I know the book says not to adjust until 105k or until it gets loud but I really have no reference to what is loud and what is normal. Can someone upload a short vid on how a healthy j30 should sound like or guide me in the right direction? Thanks for your time!

Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: wtcii on September 12, 2009, 08:46:18 PM What is piston slap? I think I may be thinking of something else but I would have thought it would've been quieter as the engine got warmer because the piston expands reducing the space between. But, then again I have no clue what I am talking about and you know everything you are talking about.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: NVA-AV6 on September 12, 2009, 09:16:49 PM Piston slap will get quiter briefly, but then get louder agin as the block and sleeves catch up on the expanson.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 12, 2009, 09:40:30 PM If it were piston slap what could have caused it ? Also which test do I need to do to see if it is piston slap or another thing ? Paul could you post a vid of what a healthy j30 sounds like if it is not much trouble ? Thanks again for your responses.

Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 13, 2009, 04:40:45 PM Well I found a vid. My engine sounds pretty similar to this one :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J01TDMlg1zM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J01TDMlg1zM) It's the clack clack clack clack clack clack continuous sound . Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: NVA-AV6 on September 13, 2009, 04:46:50 PM At least from the vid it doesn't sound too wierd.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 13, 2009, 06:34:46 PM So are J series supposed to be this loud ? I will still make the vid of my engine but it sound very similar to that one .
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: NVA-AV6 on September 13, 2009, 08:24:57 PM It is very difficult to judge sound without it being live, unless it is extreamly bad.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 22, 2009, 04:01:49 PM Well here is how my engine sounds ...

Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: NVA-AV6 on September 22, 2009, 06:04:06 PM A good valve adjustment should help, I don't hear anything outragous, but agin without hearing in person I can't be sure.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: Antoni0_23 on September 22, 2009, 08:05:16 PM Thanks Paul. If I run the car like this for a little bit more can it cause any type of damage ?
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: NVA-AV6 on September 22, 2009, 08:20:41 PM It doesn't sound like it is that bad yet.
Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: gargantula99 on July 20, 2011, 05:51:53 PM I read somewhere that the J30's don't need valve adjustments? I guess it's not true.
I'm almost at 60K miles. I think I may do one. Is there a "how to" for this? Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: thisaznboi88 on July 20, 2011, 07:08:34 PM its pretty easy. Just need to get a feel for it. I did it on my dad MDX. It was a bitch because the car was soo high up and the engine was low. My only issue was doing the rear exhuast valves. I triple checked my work. Also took the time to clean out his TB and intake manifold..
Give yourself a good 4-6 hrs. another thing to note is that you should do it if it gets loud or if its too quiet. Too quiet means that the exhaust valves are really tight. That could lead to burnt valves. My dad MDX exhaust valves were really tight. Not even .008 could get in. I also got a misfire in cylinder 2 and 6 because of it. The intake was just the opposite. a .012 could get in easy. Title: Re: Valve Adjust Time ? Post by: gargantula99 on July 20, 2011, 07:38:54 PM I need to read up on this more because I've got no clue of what you're talking about.
