Title: What GAS do you put in your ride?
Post by: CrazyCreashunz on September 02, 2009, 07:28:19 PM
What GAS do you put in your ride?

Well basically I been using Hess and putting in Premium 93 Octane since I purchased the car in January 2008. Would it harm the car if I switched to Regular 87 Octane or should I just keep putting in the 93? It's like a $10 difference on filling the tank this is why I am asking...

I usually go to Walmart because I've got one of their gift card things that gives $0.03 off a gallon and get regular 87 octane. When not using that card, I just go to a nearby Pix (Publix gas station). I very rarely put premium in my car, maybe every 3 months.

I generally use premium.

You guys are friggin' crazy.  Costco 87 octane and call it a day.  Save your money, the 4-cylinders aren't optimized to take advantage of the extra octanes.

E-85 = 105 octane

It only cost about $2.00 extra and i dont pay for my gas so I figure why not unless it hurts it.

If you guys read your manual you will find that the I4 is designed to use 87 octane gas.

I can. I have an AEM FIC to adjust the amount of fuel I put into it. You can't without any fuel management.

With fuel management and a proper tune, you can run E-85.  Some people change fuel injectors and fuel lines as preventative maintenance, although not absolutely necessary in some cars.  Some cars will need new injectors and new lines though.

I though u can't use ethanol because it will eat up the rubber hoses because I search and found a lot of E85 conversion kits.

Title: Re: What GAS do you put in your ride?

E85 will damage certain hoses.  I'm not sure what our cars have though.  You must have hoses that will not deteriorate from the E85.

I run 93 because that is what my car is tuned for.  I've been running 93 ever since I've been on k-pro.  Before that I normally ran 87.

Hey i really hope you have the right fuel system and engine parts to run that because a friend of mines had to junk his engine, fuel lines, the liner in the fuel tank was eaten up, catalytic converter was shot. i forgot the rest but those are some of the problems.

I am running 87 now but i will be at 93 when i get my cars valve train upgraded and tuned this month. Finally Got the money for it all

93 premium every time (v6) - i try to hit up Shell V-power as often as possible.

doing 87 all day all night. Not going to go higher unless I get my car tuned to it.

question tho..... why are our brother car (TSXs) recommended to use 91 only ???

since we have such similiar engines why the difference?
my buddy says his gas mileage is complete SHIT if he uses 87 but gets a ton better when using premium

Title: Re: What GAS do you put in your ride?
Post by: NWINNIE34 on September 03, 2009, 02:22:59 PM
btw i use only 87 regular.....

used premium a few times felt no difference, gas mileage was the same if i remember correctly

87 from day one.  Lots of miles on the car and no issues so far.  I don't see the value in 93 in the K24.  Rather spend the extra $$ on hookers.

Title: Re: What GAS do you put in your ride?

The TSX uses 91+ because its CR is 10.5, hence it only making 205hp stock and being able to make boat loads more power on a 93 octane kal. Ill be running 93 octane as often as possible since all the kals I can use on Kpro are run off of RSX-S Basemap.

I have a V6 so I don't know how much the ECU's differ but, I lose about 1.64 MPG when I use 87 vs 93. I keep very detailed mileage records with an app on my phone, and The only time I fall below the average is if I use Regular instead of premium.

You are still losing money.  1.64 MPG is 27.88 miles lost on a full tank of gas (17 gallons).  I'm guessing the your mpg avg combined is somewhere around 25 - 27 (I dont know much about the v6s mpg).  Around here, 87 is about $2.25 and 93 is $0.30 more.  So, instead of eating the 1 gallon mpg loss ($2.25), it's costing you an extra ($5.10) to fill up with premium.  Not much difference on one tank, sizeable difference over the life of the car.

I'm only running E-85 for temp. I want to see how it would run on my car. I've already talked to the tuner and the shop about the E-85 switch. They say its alright, and they have done it themselves on their turbo EP3s and DC5s without changing the fuel lines. I've only put about 3 gallons to see how it would run. I will be switching back to 91 Octane (Premium here in Colorado) when I burn up the rest of the E-85. (Which will be like within the next 5 miles)

V6 is a different story.  It was designed to run on either regular or premium. I remember someone saying the V6 will gain about 10hp with the 93 octane.

I use to put 89 when I first got the car for a couple of months, then switched to 87 and never looked back.

Any 87. I run 93 on occasion to slear up the fuel system but considering running 89 from now on. I did notice a slight increase in mileage with the 93 over 87.

Title: Re: What GAS do you put in your ride?

i run 87 now, but i've kept a spreadsheet of my mileage at each fill ups for the past year. for half of that year i was using premium, 93. there was a slight increase with the use of premium at first, but over the course of time, and when i placed mods onto my car(pulleys first, then TSX IM) there were increases as well. but the best mile i have ever gotten in my car, was with regular, 87. 34.43 mpg, changed the oil and put the cold air intake back on.

its all about driving style with MPG. yes some mods help increase mileage, but they also help decrease the mile.

in my mind, not enough of a difference with the smoothness of the engine, and mileage increases with premium to keep running it. not to mention it costs more, at least $.30 more around here.

yea its a 13 hp gain from 240 to 253.  i can honestly feel the difference in the butt dyno on the rare times i use 87 for a few fillups

Just make sure it's a top tier gasoline brand as cited from a GM engineer. I use Shell, that's the only TTF around here. If it were avaliable, I'd use Chevron.

Yeah, I've had the discussion about different types of fuels from different gas stations.  It looks like I'll be running Shell from now on with the new motor.

My gf and I both run 87 in both our Accords. We drive so much I don't think we could afford a higher octane right now.

I just put 93 in it usually from Kroger or Sams. We put 93 in all of our others cars so I dont see why not mine.  Kinda off topic but how much can you guys get in your tanks. I pretty much ran mine to empty and was able to get 17 gallons in it but I could see gas which I know isnt good.

I've been using 93 octane from Shell with the new motor.

Bill, to answer your question, the gas tank capacity is 17.1 gallons.  I would assume that's the most anyone that would be able to put in their car if it was bone dry.
