Title: Lesson Learned - Buy the extended warranty on electronics !
Post by: NWINNIE34 on September 02, 2009, 11:58:41 AM
So.... i learned a valuable life lesson, always buy the extended warranty on high end electronics...

once upon a time 3+ years ago i bought a 37" LG LCD 1080i tv for 1249.99
got the $200 extended 4 year warranty with it too, figured...why not....
this has saved me SO much money in the long run its sickening

tv picture would cut out.... ended up having 2 geek squad visits....and ended up replacing the main motherboard of the tv (control module, estimated cost $500 for parts)
worked good for 6 months....then audio/video wouldnt work when i turned tv on....
over the past 12 months of this...there has been apprx 4-5 visits by geek squad...and 2 more related repairs to the tv (estimated $500 and $300 for parts) from what the guy told me

now recently... it broke again requiring a 4th repair....thus is covered as a lemon under my warranty

so now Best buy gave me $ for the most comparable tv they they currently sell.... (got the guy to hook me up with a more expensive tv) worth $950
so i got $950 on a gift card...and upgraded to a 47" Toshiba 1080p with the 240hz clearscan processor for $1399 + additional $229 for another 4 yr warranty.

That original $200 i spent for the warranty has accumulated a value of approx $1300 in parts, 3 repairs worth of labor, 5-6 geek squad visits, and now $950 in cash
man oh man am i glad i got that warranty !!!!

heres my new tv... its so fuckin sick haha

dude its so sick... my LG was a great tv don't get me wrong
but was ancient compared to the newer technologies of today

I had a LG 37" LCD  1080i with 60hz processor
went to
47" Toshiba 1080p with 120hz processor but also uses this 240hz clearscan technology which upgrades the 120hz even more... making it closer to like a 180hz even tho a 180 isnt even made
the picture is excellent.... tv is almost too big for my room haha

100,000:1 contrast....colors are amazing so far

gonna get it on the wall tonight.... JUST IN TIME FOR FUCKING NFL SEASON TO START BABY !!!!!!!!!!!
could not have picked a better time for my tv to shit out on me... im lovin it !

oh and i qualified for 36 months of no interest on best buy credit card... so my payments are like $26 a month haha
might try to trade my wii+  games for a ps3...

Problem #1, you bought an LG.  lol.  My 46"  LCD has been hanging on my wall for 3 years.  Only been removed for a fresh coat of paint.

my dad has a toshiba and he loves his...
for the 46-47" class this was the best they had without buying some rediculous $4000 LED with 600hz processor...

Those Toshibas are very nice, almost bought one.  I have a Phillips, bought it at Sam's club of all places.  Don't remember model #, but the reviews were high, price was right, and most everyone that walks into my house compliments the HD picture.  All in all, I'm a happy camper.

I never buy it, maybe I should rethink that. I have never had a tv go
bad on me. Two of our tv's we have had for atleast 5 years. A sony ad samsung plasma. The Sony is so old that the tuner is seperate from the monitor. They have both been excellent. I love Samsung tvs. Out of all of our flat screens none of them have gone bad on us.

i guess it all depends on yur luck and how much cash you have at the time of purchase.....thank GOD i decided to buy it

literally $200 that i spent was worth over $2000 in the long run
worked for me... i said what the hell.... rather get it and not use it then kick myself in the ass down the road when the tv shits out....
4 years is a long time for $229

Usually those extended warranties are garbage.  As a person who supports products from the manufacturer's end, I have heard the horror stories about Worst Buy and the like.  I will never buy another LG product ever again after all the trouble that I've had with their phones.  Glad to hear you got a better TV out of it.

What problems have you had with LG phone?  In the past 6 years I've owned 3 LG phones and never had a single problem with any of them.  My Dare is a year old now and still works flawlessly.  Might have something to do with how well I take care of them though.

i got the $200 warranty for my 40'' HD toshiba a couple of years ago (which just expired) .aaaaaaaand, never used it.  waste of coin for me.  on the up side, my tv still is kicking ass and is a total beast.

I take pretty good care of my phones actually.  I just seem to have bad luck with phones in general.  To put it in perspective, I have a brand new phone that Verizon replaced for me and within a matter of a day, it started doing the same thing that the last one did.  It should shut off during calls and randomly during the day.  I called LG about it and talked to Verizon about it.  They all swore up and down that there are no problems with the phone and everyone but me loves it.  When I was in Verizon yesterday they admitted that there were tons of problems with the phone, now that they're not selling it any more.  Needless to say, it was the 3rd LG phone that I had that was a total pile of shit.  I will never buy another LG product as long as I live.

Same here, Tim. I'm on my third or fourth LG Voyager. To be honest, any LG phone product sucks (can't say LG in general, I've got an LG HDTV and love it). My first phone was echoing people's voices back at them, then the second did the same, then the third the internal speaker went out, so the only way to hear people is through the speakerphone. I'm crossing my fingers on this one now.

I went through 3 Voyagers myself.  Back OT though.  Those extended warranties are okay if the manufacturer has a shitty warranty or shitty service.  I would never buy one of those extended warranties from a Worst Buy for anything that my company sells because I've heard some of the horror stories about places like that jerking customers around.  I have a thing against Worst Buy because I've always gotten horrible service and terrible advice from the high school rejects that work there as sales people.  Flat out, those guys don't know jack shit.

Honestly it's not worth buying extended through the retailer. A good company will stand behind there products(may need to call and beat them up).

to each his own... my 4yr extended warranty costed me $200 and was worth over $2000 in the long run....

i guess i thought of it as.... would i rather spend more now.... or run the risk of being raped later?
$229 is a small price to pay to make sure i will have a perfectly operating BEAUTIFUL tv for the next 4 years, no questions asked....

for phones....they shit out way too often and they take a mass amount of abuse compared to some other higher end electronics

just put it up on the wall last night.... so pumped for NFL season
goin to the Jets/Eagles game tonight...free tix  FTMFW !

GO BIRDS !!!!!

I have 2 questions.  What was the manufacturer's warranty?  What would they have done under these same circumstances?

I remember that I bought a 2 year extended warranty from Home Depot for my Dremel.  When my Dremel died, I went back to Home Depot and had them tell me that they couldn't do anything for me since it was still under the Dremel warranty (which was 5 years).  So I asked them, "Why did you sell me this warranty?  It doesn't even seem like I can use it."  They basically said that they wouldn't do anything to help me since their warranty expired before the Dremel warranty.  Those fuckers!!

Manufactores warranty on any home theator ex HTIB, TVS, DVD is always 1 year if you read the fine print on that label it says 90 days parts and labor and for the rest of the year just parts, but its limited meaning they would only cover manufacture defects.

I don't think I've ever paid for an extended warranty... to be honest, I've never had the need. The only warranty that I would keep is for my phone, since it's a complete pile of shit. As far as my TV goes, I'm crossing my fingers, lol. It's been running completely fine though. Oh, another thing I got an extended warranty on (well, it was free) was for my Xbox 360. I'm on my fourth replacement so far, and now my warranty is out (3 years for the red rings of death).

I never worry about warranties for computers, either. I build my own, so if the certain part doesn't work when I just put it in, I just RMA it for a replacement, lol. Some computer parts manufacturers have some pretty good warranties, though. I didn't realize it, but I had some RAM that died, but the company has a lifetime warranty, so I got a free replacement, even though the RAM was like 4 years old lol.
