Title: Computer Help
Post by: wtcii on July 24, 2009, 08:32:19 PM
I have a HP dv4 that is about 3 months old. It's not a monster, but it has plenty for me. My problem is when I wake it up to log in, it lags. I tried googling it, but none of the problems were the same as what I am having. I'll begin typing and nothing will appear. It seems like it can't keep up. It's not a big deal but it is really aggravating. Thanks for any help you all can give me.

WOO something in my specialty! :P

I know this is annoying, but have you updated Windows at all? Is it XP or Vista? If you're on XP, make sure you're up to SP3. If you're on Vista, make sure you're up to SP2. I know that for Vista SP2, they did some fixing on when the computer comes out of standby.

That's because you don't give it time to load everything up, that's probably do to a slow startup. If you want faster startup you should clean out your registry, defragment your hdd, and clean up the startup items. I would suggest a program such as tuneup utilities or ace utilities. Also why do you put it to sleep instead of shutting it down? Is it because of a super slow startup? If so the beat bet for that would be doing the same that I stated above.

It is Windows Vista 64bit SP1. I didn't know that SP2 was out yet. I use Windows update regularly. I put it to sleep because I read somewhere that it is better to put vista computers to sleep than shut them down. Regardless, it is much faster to put it to sleep opposed to shutting it down and rebooting it.

See if that helps.

Matter of fact, I got the update for Vista 3 days ago. My computer is always going to sleep and I have noticed the boot time from sleep being quicker. Who knew?(http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/images/shrug.gif)

I just got done talking to my Dad, who used to be an IT but is only proficient in XP, and he said not to get it. He said if I needed it Windows would push it. So what should I do?

Windows would push it? Well, if it does end up "pushing" it, you could always uninstall the service pack, I believe.

I installed SP2 on my stepdad's laptop, and noticed no decrease in performance.

Windows won't push it. Your updater would pop up saying there's an update available and you just click yes, same as any other update. Vista is a whole other animal than XP.

I think what he meant by pushing it is that it isn't showing up in windows update.

Dude vista is a ram killer! How much ram do you have. I upgraded the memory in my HP laptop, and it made a world of differance.

True Vista is a RAM killer, but when you have at least 2GB, it runs fine. Hell, I'm running Ultimate on 2GB right now and I'm using about 50% of my ram with 5 programs running.

Vista used to take up 1.5 gigs on idle out of my 4. Windows 7 now take up 500mb. Yes, I am running Windows 7 :D. I hate Vista soo much.

I still say,  you should defragment and cleanout your registry and clean out your startup items.

Same here vista with same amount of ram and still lags some times i have tweaked it deleted alot of crap it came with and defrag almost everyday with perfect disk so i mostly stick to linux now havent gone back to vista in a while

I got me 6gb of ram for cheap, so I never have to worry about ram again, lol.

Bill, did you end up installing SP2? I just read this, and find it pretty funny:

“Microsoft will release Windows Vista SP2 to the Download Center and through Windows Update on May 26, 2009. Automatic Updates are scheduled to begin on June 30, 2009.”

I haven't done it yet. I have two memory slots and I currently have 2 gig sticks in each one for a total of four gigs. I max out at 8 gigs, So any upgrade is going to be pretty pricey. Everything is fast when it gets past that initial lag. I'll update it soon.

That's where I buy any and every computer part. You can sometimes get 2x2gb sticks for 20 bucks, like I did. However, if you have 2gb of ram, and you're not doing anything extreme, it should be fine.

Have you done any intense optimizing of Vista at all, like disabling unneeded services? I'm currently running Vista SP1 x64 as well, so I could provide some advice.

I have 4 gigs of ram currently. So going to 8 is my only option. I haven't done anything besides turning it on and using it. My Dad uses newegg for everything.

Scroll down, and follow the *Safe* column. To get to your services, press Windows + R, then type in "services.msc". Then just right click on each service and hit properties.

I started to do this, but when I bring up my services and compare these to the ones on the chart, they are not the same. Maybe this is because I am still SP1. I'll update that soon.

But yea black viper is a good source to tweak the services i would upgrade to sp2 and also turn off system protection "which is system restore" and the aero glass is a waist of memory as well you can also go into programs and features and turn off all the windows features you don't need and will never use. also try this tweak as well
Code:
Clean up Old RTM & SP1 Backup Files in vista Sp2
To housekeep your hard disk and clean up those old and unused SP1 backup files, users probably can try the new Service Pack Cleanup Tool which is also named as compcln.exe. This successor for SP1 cleanup tool, Vsp1cln.exe, can easily remove all the system files (RTM & SP1) inherited from the older versions but replaced by Vista SP2.

Running this compeln.exe tool is pretty simple:
1. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt or click Start>Run and type cmd to open Command Prompt Windows
2. Execute the command “Compcln.exe”. The path is “c:\Windows\System32 \compcln.exe”.
3. Users will be prompted a question whether to keep Vista SP2 permanently in the system.
4. Once users type “Y” and press enter, the system will start performing the windows components clean.
After the cleansing process, users will notice the free hard disk space has increased substantially.
