Title: If I could only retire Post by: skizot on July 23, 2009, 12:04:46 PM Totally random topic, but this past week I have been off from work for some well needed and well deserved R&R. Before I went on my 10 day hiatus, I was having lunch with a co-worker and he said that when he was out of work for about a month, he was bored and could not wait to get back to work. I told him that I would love to have just enough money coming in each month to pay the bills and live comfortable. If I were able to do that, I totally would not work anymore. He said I was crazy.
Well this week, I decided to see what it would be like to be sort of retired. I had no plans for my time off, just to be off and relax. Would I get bored? Would I be so ready to get back to work (granted only 10 days) that I couldn't stand it? The answer. Hell no! I have enjoyed doing nothing so much, I only wish I had a way to keep this going. I have used the time to work on my cars, clean up and clean out some things in the house that I have been wanting to do for so long and just never had the time. Fixed things around the house, etc. I realize this can only take up so much time and eventually these tasks would run out, so what exactly would I do with the rest of it? I am pretty confident that if I was on an extended leave of absence, I would constantly find plenty to keep me busy. With my days off winding down quickly, it has left me in a bit of a funk, now wanting to find a way to not have to work ever again. Yes, I realize such a ridiculous thing to say as I need to work, to keep the money coming in, but I am curious if others on the forums have felt this way? I realize I am probably on the older end of the age spectrum on these boards, but still curious nevertheless. Title: Re: If I could only retire Post by: Mike on July 23, 2009, 12:15:30 PM I'm with you 100%. the only time I have ever gotten bored with time off was when I had a major surgury, and couldn't do anything but, basically sit or lay in bed. I would rather be at work than be restricted like that but, beyond that I enjoy time off very much.

Title: Re: If I could only retire Post by: timot_one on July 23, 2009, 04:04:18 PM Scott, you know I'm with you on this. I think we're close to the same age. I was in a huge funk at the end of my vacation when I was down there in March. I know exactly how you feel. I don't think I would ever be bored if I retired.

I know how you felt as I do not want to go back to my normal grind next week. I have to, but I do not want to. I really don't think it's an age thing Tim, moreso the type of job you have. Not really, I absolutely love the company I work for and I do actually enjoy what I do, I just would rather not have the headaches of doing it. I understand your point, but really dont think it has to do with your age, although if you've been doing the same thing for 10 yrs, I could see that getting old and quick.

Not quite 10, but coming up on year 7 next month. Title: Re: If I could only retire Post by: timot_one on July 23, 2009, 05:50:16 PM I know you love your job Scott. When I was down there I was completely hating my job. There were a lot of changes and things were getting pretty bad. It seems that enough people voiced this to the "higher ups" and things have mellowed out a lot here. It's starting to get better here, but I still love the idea of not having to go to work to pay the bills. I'm the type of person that loves a lazy day of doing stuff that I want to do.
