Title: Tool Discussion Thread
Post by: wtcii on June 20, 2009, 12:18:01 PM
I have always used my Dad's tools, and I have decided that I need my own. Sears is currently having a Father's Day Sale and their ratchet sets are 50% off. This made me decide that I need to go buy some. He has had the same set of craftsman tools since he was fresh out of college. They currently have this set of tools (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00937204000P?vName=&cName=&sName=&mv=cmp) on sale for $99.99, which I think is a good deal. Can anyone provide any insight on on the tools they use and if you think that this is a good deal and a good place to start my tool collection.

Looks like a good buy and start to me.  You dont want your collection ot get too big though because of whenever you move. I've got a basic set like that, air compressor and going to be picking up a few air tools as well.

Yeah I think that would be fine for hand tools. This (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=206483-55738-LW26SS07-TB03&lpage=none) is the tool box that I think that I want, so if I can contain my tools within a box that size, I think that I will be ok. Really the only thing I could think of other than that would be air tools. To run air tools such as an impact driver, do I need a big tank to run the tools. I doubt something like a pancake compressor could run it, maybe it could, but I dont really know.

You dont need a huge tank. I think mine is 3 gallon and the only reason I went with it is because it had wheels. Most of the air tools require 2-3hp so that's really the only thing you have to watch for. The other thing you may wanna get is a torque wrench. I picked one up from Pep Boys about a month ago for about $45. You turn the handle til you get to the desired torque and when you are torqueing something it stops and clicks by itself once it's reached the setting you set. Great for using on lug nuts.

I agree with Derrick on this one start out with your basic tools and work your way up. I have a 6 drawer Snap-on box with a complete set of Snap-on tools and I love them but there are tools in my box I have yet to use and I have had the set for a year now. As far as air tools go, I love them, But air tools are like hand tools in the sence that you do not buy a dirt cheap off brand wrench and expect it to handle a bolt that has been rusted for 10 years and not break. Be sure to keep them oiled lol. and one thing that has always come in handy for me I picked up a set of breaker bars i know you can accomplish the same thing with a long pipe but it is much easier for me to grab my breaker bar out of my box than it is to look around for a pipe

I forgot about the torque wrench, I have been wanting one because I am always afraid that I am going to over tighten some like my oil drain plug or transmission or under tighten my lug nuts. I found a Kobalt one for about $60.00. I was thinking about picking one of those up when I do the rest. I need to do some more research on the air tools, but I think that I amgoing to go ahead and get this ratchet set.

Breaker bars are for stuck bolts. The breaker bar gives you more leverage to "break"(hence the name)the bolt loose. Like Big Mike #2 stated you can put a pipe over the end of a wrench and it'll do the same thing but who keeps a perfectly cut piece of pipe laying around.

Ahhh, I think that my Dad may have a set of those or maybe it was just a really long ratchet. Ill have to look into a set of those.

I would buy it and ship it to you but after tax and freight charges it wouldn't be worth it.

When rocket starter and I installed my Ingalls ETD we spent a good 15 minutes looking for something that we could use to get the motor mounts broke loose. I am more of a hard work kind of person but the breakers bars have always kinda helped me work smarter not harder as they say haha

Make sure to get sets of 6 point sockets, they help alot to prevent stripping the heads on bolts, also a long flex handle 3/8 ratchet is a real good investment.

I believe the set that I am looking at comes with a variety of both 6pt. and 12 pt sockets. Are there any disadvantages of having 6pt. rather than all 12pt.?

I do. That's what helped me break my rachet yesterday trying to install my rear camber arms.

Well, I decided to do it. My dad offered to do it for me, so I accepted, of course. I got a got the 204 piece socket set, a chest, and some other misc tools. Now I need a torque wrench, air tools, and some other random things that ill need. I also need to find away to organize my sockets. Here are my pics because I like it so much  : Crappy Cell Phone Pics

Nice collection u get there Bill.

I have a 1200 piece set from craftsman, and a 18 piece tool chest that i keep all my shit in.... although the toolchest is not big enough for waht I need, it does do the job..

I have seen a 25 drawer kobalt over at lowes that has a pioneer head unit, speakers, a fridge and a couple of led lights, for like $1000 which is not a bad deal considering what ur getting...

but Bill, may i suggest to you, it helps me keep all my sockets neat and organized.. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... ocket+tray (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00965165000P?keyword=socket+tray)

^What do you do with that many tools? I just change my oil occasionally.
My Dad has these racks that hold both short and long for metric and standard in all 3 sizes. They fit in my bottom drawer, so I am thinking about those. They are portable, which would be nice, and it is clearly visible which is which. The only cons are space and price.

I think my Dad and I are going to install my springs ourselves instead of me paying $419.00 to have Midas do it. Does anyone have a suggestions on a spring compressor and a torque wrench. I kind of like Kobalt tools and they have a pretty nice looking torque wrench for $80.00, but then again I have no idea when it comes to tools so it could be a piece of crap.

You can rent a spring compressor from your neighborhood auto supply store. As far as the Kobalt goes I've never had any experience with their tools to be honest. I got my torque wrench for $50(got it from Pep Boys and cant remember the brand) so I dont know what the difference is between the one you're looking at. I just googled it and they look the same besides the fact I bought a 3/8.

My guess the only difference is the lifetime warranty on the Kobalt, your might have one too though. About the compressor, do we have mcphearson front struts? I saw compressors for those and non specified.

I dont know on either of those actually. LOL! I used my torque wrench one time since I bought it a couple months ago, I'll have to look and have no clue on the struts.

I have an update. I finally got my sockets organized. Each size, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and both 6pt. and 12 pt. each have their own rack. They are easy to grab and look nice. Also, I purchased a 3/8 Kobalt Torque wrench with a lifetime warranty and a Craftsman Spring Compressor for my upcoming spring install project. Pics:

Torque Wrench I think this is my favorite tool and I have never used it.

I think I am done buying tools for now.

Ok, so Christmas is coming around. This would be for my dad. He has been wanting a compressor for a while. What do you guys suggest. I think the most rigorous tool he'd be using would be a impact wrench. I dont want to spend much more than 200-300 dollars. This may not even be possible. I am having trouble finding one within reason that can run a impact wrench.

I've gotta bump this thread.  I know it's old as shit and nobody has posted in here for a while.  Since I've moved to Ohio I've been getting a lot of new tools.  Since they don't get a "ton" of use, most of them are fairly inexpensive.  I just got a 3 piece 26" tool box that I'm picking up on Monday.  Hopefully, between that and the 26" 5 drawer tool box, the 5 drawer tool cart, and 1 drawer tool cart I have, I have enough storage for all of my tools.  I'll post some pics later on Monday when I get everything set up in my garage.  I think I'm going to need a new home for my compressor too.
