Title: Black Window Trim
Post by: gargantula99 on December 22, 2010, 11:45:02 AM
Ok, so I know people have done the black out trim tape and also paint method.  From their experience, which one would they recommend?  I really want to do this, because I want it to match my black painted grill.  I'm thinking of doing the paint, just don't have a garage to put the car in to do it.  I can do it in my driveway, but I know dust will fly into the paint.  I don't mind spending a day just covering the whole car in newspaper.

Go with the tape. Its easy and OEM style.

How did you get it to go around the top curve?  Does it last or is it something that needs to get replace often?

Depends on the quality of the product you use. Some of the 3M material is said to be good for 5 years.

Alex used some smoke tint vinyl. I used the TrimBrite stuff. Its actually pretty stretchy and went around the curve nicely.

Nelson, check out 3M Di-Noc vinyl. they have a bunch of youtube video's showing installations and it can be done fairly easily with a heat gun and help.

I know that Dave (striktlyaccord) panted his trim because the vinyl tape didn't come out good and didn't last.

Mine has been going strong for over a year now. If it ever fades, the stuff is cheap enough to reapply.

That'd be the best thing. Makes for easy application.

Thanks Z. I'm going to use the same stuff you used. Seems like it's a cheap and easy thing to do.

I bought a roll of this stuff for $20 to redo the trim on my windows as it was starting to peel.

I haven't started the project yet but I'm planning to in the next few days. If it turns out ok I'll black out the chrome on the 8th gen as well.

I'll report back with pics and how much of a PIA it was.

That's a pretty steep price for that stuff. Post pics once you're done. Did you get the gloss stuff?

It's actually not a bad price. Honda wants $96 just for the top trim. Which is the piece that is peeling on my car.

This stuff is 3 inches wide and 30 feet long. I cut a piece about 56 inches long and split it down the middle. The first time I applied it, there were creases forming and I couldn't get them out. So I ripped it off and tried again with the other piece. Same thing happened but only worse. I'm pretty sure this is because my technique sucks ass. You really need to take your time applying it and I'm not that patient.

I think I'm going to just paint it and clear it with some rattle cans. I bought some to do my emblems so I'm just going to do the trim as well. I think it'll be more durable than vinyl any how.

I can tell you that when I did have it on the trim, even though it was creased up, it looked just like OEM. It matched the remaining trim perfect.

I still have 25 feet left, 50 feet if you split it down the middle. Which is more than enough to do the all the trim on a car.
