So today I got into my car,  turned the key past the point that the steering is unlocked, only to be unable to turn it farther.  It also won't turn back far enough to be able to remove the key?

Does anybody have an idea regarding what is involved in fixing this?

Try Checking your shifter see if it clicked all the way once you put it in park

It doesn't. Is your steering wheel locked in either direction?

Is your car an 03? There was a recall that had to do with the ignition. Its for the key coming out when its not supposed to but, you never know.

It could be a mechanical issue.  I'm sure you've already tried rocking your steering wheel.  Have you taken it to a mechanic or dealership?

I took the whole assembly off the steering column, took the switch off the assembly, and since the key was in, I can start it with a screwdriver now.  I can simply take the switch along to provide some form of theft deterrent.  I'm waiting for my other keys to arrive in the mail, and then I'm going to bring it to a dealer to see what needs to be replaced.  Prob need some combination of 1 and two replaced.  I wonder if a locksmith could do anything.

Might be cheaper to bring it to a locksmith. You might also get better results than at the dealer.
