Title: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on February 17, 2009, 04:03:09 PM
So, I've had the Greddy Evo2 on my car for about 6-7 months and all I can say is that it's way too loud for my taste.  Since it was for the V6, it is way too loud for my i4.  For a better understanding of my set up, I have:

DC SS header
Magnaflow 5400 series high flow cat 2.5" in/out
Greddy Evo2 for the V6 Coupe (modified)
removed one of the Greddy resonators and added a "Turbo Tube" fiberglass packed resonator

After all that, it's still to loud for me.  So after talking to the exhaust shop about other options, I just purchased two Magnaflow 14827 mufflers.  I will probably install them in a few weeks when I have time.  I'll have some pics of the old and new set up when I have time.

What are you going to be doing with the old setup Tim?

Good stuff Tim! You should love the Maggies. I know I do!

I'm keeping everything but the mufflers.  I'm going to give all 3 Evo2 mufflers that I have to Mike as back ups since he has an Evo2 and I was given 2 of the mufflers for free.  I will take donations from Mike if he wants though. ;)

LOL well Maybe i'll have something I can donate... Do you think the evo 2 will be to loud on my car?

The shop that I go to is the only place that gets these things.  It's basically a fiberglass packed resonator that has a baffle in it to quiet things down.  Most resonators like flowmasters and magnaflows are straight through designs and don't quiet things down as much.

It's just the mufflers.  They're the same as what you already have.

Ugh, I hope you post back and say you like the Magnaflow's.  Personally they are on my second strike and I will NEVER buy the products for a import again.  They make decent stuff for trucks...

The pre-made Magnaflow catback I put on my Spec V was raspy and sounded like balls with the factory manifold.  When I changed it out for a DC SS Header it sounded so fucking disgusting, it was like a cat getting raped while bee's buzzed around his head.  EEK.

The universal Mag I had put on the Accord cost too much and was just far too loud.  Wasn't raspy, it was deep but yet still had a higher tone to it as well.  The WS2 that I have is far far far more superior muffler.

If you get them on and like them, that's awesome.  Just my $0.02

Tim I know there the same I mean in general. I really don't want my car to be very loud at all.

Post the pics once installed Tim... JT gave me his whole V6 OEM Dual exhaust and I might go tomorrow to install it...  Once I save for my mag 14829, I'll just switch the exhaust itself.. Can't wait to see your new set up.

I just need to get this exhaust installed on my car as soon as I have the money.  It's gonna have to wait until after I get back from FL though.  I'd rather save my money for my vacation.

Tim, do you think that we can pass state inspections around here with a high-flow cat?  Or even more, a test pipe? (I have a feeling you've been exempt from these, however, because you're registered in MI)

Also, when are you going to FL?  You might be able to help me with a few things if you're crossing paths with Rolo or Lex.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on February 22, 2009, 01:10:16 AM
I'm not sure if they do a sniffer test on your exhaust in RI, but you can use the spark plug defoulers like I did with my cat.  Yes, I am exempt from having inspections because my car is registered in MI.  I am going to FL in 2 weeks.  I will be in Orlando, so I doubt I will be meeting up with Rolo or Alex unless they come up.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: Mike on February 22, 2009, 01:18:20 AM
Ri doesn't currently do a sniffer test although they have the ability to do so. I'd imigine if something looked suspicious they would conduct the sniffer test. I know when the did my girls camry inspection the had it up on a lift and were looking around. I don't know if they would notice a defouler or not.

how often do you need to get your car inspected? or does that vary from state to state?

nice pick on the magnaflow. should be what you're looking for, and from the two videos i've seen with derricks exhaust it sound nice as well.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: Skippy on February 22, 2009, 06:07:00 PM
New cars usually have a latency period that you don't need to get them inspected, at least that's what it was like when I lived in Jersey.  Inspections are annual in most states.  Thankfully, Florida has no emissions inspection requirmemts :)

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on February 22, 2009, 09:43:48 PM
If you read my post above yours RJ, you may have noticed that I do not have to get my car inspected.  Either way, I should have these in a few days.  They are going to have to wait a while before I install them.  I will probably wait a few more weeks before I have these installed.

oh sorry tim didn't see that one. dunno if i'd want to go catless around MD though...

good luck with the magnaflows! im getting mine done in the next few weeks once im on break.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on February 22, 2009, 11:00:49 PM
Who said I was running catless?  This new set up will only change the mufflers, nothing else.  Right now, I have a DC SS header with a new flex pipe, Magnaflow 5400 series high flow cat, Greddy Evo2 for the V6 coupe exhaust with one of the resonators replaced with a resonator called a "turbo tube" that my muffler shop get's exclusively.  The turbo tube is nothing more than a 18" body 7" fiberglass packed resonator with a baffle to reduce the noise.

Post by: striktlyaccord on February 23, 2009, 01:10:25 AM
In RI, inspections are required every 2 years.

Back on topic:  Tim, good luck with the new setup.  I'll have to check it out when it's done.

I envy states with no emissions qualifications for inspection. I'm pretty sure you can't get a sticker with a cel on though right? Also, parts that are 50 state Carb exempt should have no issues passing inspection correct?

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on February 23, 2009, 10:45:59 AM
Yeah, but I still have a CEL.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up

what is the different between the resonator? is one chambered an the other one straight through? or is it the density of the fiberglass packing?

Yes the date hasn't been nailed down but, it looks like Newport RI. We don't talk about these things "overthere". Tim any idea why your current set up throws the cel is it the cat?

The resonator on the Greddy Evo2 is a straight through design.  I would assume that it is fiberglass packed.  The "turbo tube" resonator is a lot larger in diameter and also a little longer.  It is also fiberglass packed.  It is a straight through design that has a baffle or wall for the exhaust to go around to reduce noise.  It has made a significant difference, but it still wasn't quiet enough for me.

I don't have a CEL from the exhaust any more.  I was getting a CEL before because of having a high flow cat.  With 2 spark plug defoulers to back out the O2 sensor about 1 1/4".  After that it went away completely.  I have a CEL now because my secondary O2 sensor needs to be replaced and because half of my sensors aren't even connected to my ECU.  It's kinda funny because I currently have 10 codes.

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on March 31, 2009, 12:14:22 PM
The code was taken care of with a spark plug defouler that spaces the O2 sensor about 1 1/4" out.  Not sure what you need a parts list for or what parts you're looking for though.

ohhh i would like to know the part number for the cat you are using and the lenghts of each defouler your using

i did the calculations and 1 1/4" is about 32 mm

just wanted to know where you bought them

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on March 31, 2009, 01:18:40 PM
I bought the spark plug defoulers at auto zone.  The magnaflow cat that I have is a 54055 (http://www.car-sound.com/02product/displayuniversal.asp?universal=54055).  It is a universal cat with no flanges.  If you're looking for a bolt on replacement, you should talk to Keith (k.huston) and ask him which one we bolted on his car a few weeks ago.

Got my mufflers installed today at Enhanced Street Performance.  I was expecting this to be a fairly quick install from my previous exhaust shop experiences, although this was the first time I've gone to this shop.  It took a bit longer than I had expected for a muffler install, but I'm glad that it took so long.  The pictures will be enough to show the difference from a fast exhaust install compared to an exhaust install done properly.  I am very happy with the professionalism of the shop and the quality of their work, and above all I am extremely happy with my exhaust.  It has finally mellowed out and I no longer have that obnoxious drone in the cabin.  Here's the pics.

Looks good Tim! I remember when you initially saw our Magnaflow set up you thought it was a lil loud but I think that's due to the 2.5" piping. How does yours compare now?

Title: Re: New Exhaust Set Up
Post by: timot_one on April 11, 2009, 11:34:50 AM
I'm not 100% sure what you have exactly for your entire set up Derrick.  I am very happy with how my set up sounds now though, compared to the Greddy Evo2's original install.  Considering that I started with a DC SS header, to a Magnaflow 5400 series high flow cat with a 2 1/4" in/out, to the Greddy Evo2's 2 3/8" pipe with the 2 Greddy resonators on the mid pipe and Evo2 mufflers.  I replaced one of the Greddy resonators with a 7" diameter 18" long body fiberglass packed and baffled resonator, which toned it down a little but, but not enough.  With these Magnaflows, it made my exhaust quieter on the oustide, but greatly reduced the interior noise.  I'm actually going to go back in a few months and have the mid pipe replaced with a different resonator and have a second one fabricated as just a straight pipe with no cat and no resonators for when I plan on taking the car to the track.

Ours is ceramic Dc headers, stock cat, 18" Magnaflow resonator, 14829 Magnaflows with 2.5" piping. Good to hear your satisfied. Cant wait to hear the clips.

The shop had the mandrel bends there and I chose those over crush bends that they would have made.

After hanging out with Tim yesterday I can vouch for how quiet his exhaust is. You hear it at idle (when he isn't blasting his system) and hear the intake over the exhaust when he gets on it. And highway drone is nil. I give it a dirty thumbs up.

Little bit late, but oh well. I like the size a lot. Looks real nice! Any sound clips? I know they will not be completely accurate, but something would be nice
Does it sound anything like this:

I know you have duals, but does that effect the sound much and different mufflers. I though that they matched your description, kind of.

Yeah, mine sounds deeper.  I'll see if I can get some recordings of my exhaust when I have time.  I'm going to make a video this weekend if the weather holds up tomorrow and I get my new tune upoaded properly.

I've done a trip to MI and back and it was horrible.  I felt so bad for the people in the back seat.  I've done a few trips to NYC and back with these on and it's sooo much better.

Hey Tim, I have a question about your new setup. Did you go to a smaller diamater after the Y-pipe or did you stay with the same throughout the whole system. I ask because I'm hoping to do the rear lip mod soon and I see that there is going to be 2 exhaust cut outs. So I would like to fill in that left cutout even though I just have the 4cyl sedan. My setup right now is a custom skunk2 exhaust with 2.25" piping from the catback with a resonator. Would I be able to stay with a 2.25" piping after the Y-pipe or would I have to go smaller?

Stay with the 2.25" pipe.

Hey since a sedan can fit a v6 coupe exhaust, an i4 coupe should fit a v6 coupe exhaust no problem, correct? Only would have to add a hangar on the driver's side, no?

The flanges are different at the cat.  They will not bolt on.  You will need to cut the V6 flange off and weld the i4 flange on it.
