I was just wondering what are the optimum shift points for getting the most mpg for the accord v6 6spd? I been shifting at 3k and 3.5k+ when I want to skip gear like 1st to 3rd, 2nd to 4th, and so on.

I just want to know what are the economical shift points since I getting 330miles on a full tank. I want to try to bump it up to 350+ if possible.

It all depends on the road, traffic, and your driving habits but if I were you I would try and shift at a lower rpm and see what your mileage does.  3 to 3.5k seems high, I wouldnt try and skip gears. I know it's a completely different vehicle but I shifted my 5.0 F-150 at 2k during normal driving. I would think you could do 2 to 2.5 and get 350 easily.

Skipping gear is not worth it, unnecessary labor on the transmission. why get a manual if you're gonna be lazy  . I shift my 6spd at 3k 1st -6th (normal driving habit). At 70-75mph in 6th gear Im at 2.5k maybe a little more but, below 3k. you should be in the 400+ mpg. On my trip to canada this summer I believe i got close to 500. Also, when I just got my car I remember driving for long time in 5th gear totally forgetting to change to 6. and didnt realize until i looked down on the tach gauge and saw it at 3k+.

yeah I skip gear because I can't switch them fast enough since its all pretty new to me. I go through first and second gear really quick since the speed limit here are mostly 45mph +, and it seems like the auto car are tailgating me from the light during the first 2 gears. I shift first when its 3k at 15mph, second gear I shift at 25mph at 3k also.

Also is it true if I shift to early the car doesn't burn the gas that is still in the cylinder completely? I don't know I just heard a rumor.

I usually shift at 2.2-2.5k, i think 3k is "sport driving" lol but i drive like an old lady and always have someone riding my ass. You just get used to it in RI i guess. On my way from RI to NJ i got 30-33mpg and that was doing 75-80+ the whole way. I don't like to shit any less then 2.3ish cause then the next gear puts you really low in the rpm's and u have no power.

never heard of the shifting too early thing. I'm interested to see if anyone else have heard of it.

P.S. congrats on your new car. Trust me you will love it, I love mine that for sure

3500 is a bit high for everyday driving IMO.  typically i'll shift 1-3/4 at about 2500 and if im going 4-6 its generally on a highway and it'll be a bit higher, 3300 or so.

My shift points are between 2-3k in regular driving and 3k+ during spirited driving.

back in the old G7A, I asked a similiar question as in the OP. I believe skippy shed some much needed light on this.

If I recall properly, it's not wise to skip shift due to abusing/damaging the synchros.

On another note, I recommend installing a cold air intake and exhaust, keep your eyes on the road and let the car tell you when to shift. Let it be a symphony of sound and power.

Couldnt have said it better Arie. When I had my 5.0 I had intake/LOUD exhaust and like you said, the engine/exhaust note will tell you when to shift, you have to feel for the sweet spot.

sorry to bring up a old thread but i was wondering what is the highest rpm you should cruise at? the speed limit is 40 and i usually do about 46 and the rpms are about 2,400-2,500 in 4th. that feels to high to just cruise at but also feels to early to shift to 5th

Its not too low to go into 5th. Its definitely to low to go into 6th though. Even though I'm a k24 with a 5 spd, depending on traffic conditions, I'm in 5th by about 40-45. Obviously, if I'm going down the highway, I'm not in 5th until I hit about 60. HTH.

Driving a manual transmission is not an exact science. There is no certain RPM to shift at that everyone can rigidly follow. The skill of driving a manual is mostly tactile and, to a smaller degree, audible. With experience, you learn to feel the engine and drivetrain and you 'automatically' make gear changes. Because of the driver's close, even poetic connection with the vehicle, it saddens me to see how the manual transmission is fading from existence. It's prevalence in modern vehicles is being surpassed by new technology such as dual-clutch 'auto-manuals' that simply outperform the true 'three-pedal manual' of the past. In my opinion, the new technology can never replace the utter control drivers have in a manual, nor the emotional satisfaction of a pure driving experience.

wow bump from the dead. Aries you were right about the intake. It really does help with upgrading and It is especially good for down gearing. I usually do it by ear after that. I shift at 2.5k after second. 1st is 3k rpm at 15-20 mph. 2nd is 25 or 30 mph. then its w/e from there. As for down gearing It all varies. I usually down gear to 3rd and sometimes 2nd if the situation is allowed/ needed.
