Hey guys. Me again. I noticed that my car in the morning makes almost no noise when it's cold but when it starts to get warmer and eventually gets to temperature I hear a loud clack clack clack noise and it's like metal againts metal. Does my engine need to adjust the valves or is this normal? I really don't know much about the past life of my car since it was preowned and I got it at 64k. My car now has reached 71k and I know the book says not to adjust until 105k or until it gets loud but I really have no reference to what is loud and what is normal. Can someone upload a short vid on how a healthy j30 should sound like or guide me in the right direction? Thanks for your time!

If it was valve noise it would actually get quieter with heat not louder. Sounds more like piston slap.....

What is piston slap? I think I may be thinking of something else but I would have thought it would've been quieter as the engine got warmer because the piston expands reducing the space between. But, then again I have no clue what I am talking about and you know everything you are talking about.

Piston slap will get quiter briefly, but then get louder agin as the block and sleeves catch up on the expanson.

If it were piston slap what could have caused it ? Also which test do I need to do to see if it is piston slap or another thing ? Paul could you post a vid of what a healthy j30 sounds like  if it is not much trouble ? Thanks again for your responses.

It is very difficult to judge sound without it being live, unless it is extreamly bad.

A good valve adjustment should help, I don't hear anything outragous, but agin without hearing in person I can't be sure.

I read somewhere that the J30's don't need valve adjustments?  I guess it's not true.

I'm almost at 60K miles.  I think I may do one.  Is there a "how to" for this?
