Title: Radar Detectors and the like
Post by: rjp6262 on March 22, 2009, 08:58:27 PM
so i don't know where else this could fall in the forum, but if it needs to be moved then i don't mind. anyway..

im trying to get an idea of what kind of radar detector everyone uses. right now i am trying to decide between the Escort Passport 8500 X50 or a Valentine One. i know that the best way to avoid a speeding ticket is to not speed, blah blah blah. but sometimes we can't help it, and we speed! so if anyone on here has one of these two detectors, post up what you think of them!

or just post up what you have and what you think of it!

valentine one!

If they ever come out with a newer model, you can just send it in and pay an update fee for them the update it (fee depends on the type of update, firmware or hardware).

ive got a passport x8500 and have never been pulled over (when using it - hehe).  i have a few friends that are diehard V1 though.  theyre mad expensive though and tell you which direction the radar is coming from, which isnt a seller IMO

what im trying to figure out, is why from valentine one's site, it's $399, but everywhere else on the web its $499. kinda weird...but im thinking the V1 at this point. has anyone ever tried the Veil stuff? Veil Anti Laser Stealth Coating (http://www.radarbusters.com/radar-detector-accessories/laser-veil/laserveil.cfm)

I have the escort 9500. Lets you set reminders to speed traps and block out bad signals via GPS. Awesome.

v1 retail is 399, alot of places sell it with extra accessories for 499, you can also get a "refurbished" model from v1 for 10% off, just call them and ask to purchase one of those, they warranty it and everything

and the license plate stealth coating stuff is a joke...if you want to achieve the same thing, you can get high lacquer varnish from home depot for $10, the best it does is blur out your license plate when someone at a meet takes a picture with flash lol

didn't know that about the v1, i'll have to look into what all extra in included.

i had a funny feeling that the Veil was a joke. i mean it may work, but i'd much rather invest in a laser jammer...they seem to work from the multitude of videos online.

Escort Passport 8500 FTW!

I've been using mine since it came out and it has worked flawlessly. I highly recommend it.

I use a top of the line (i think) whistler.  Pennies on the dollar vs v1 & escort.  Almost equal performance.

I've got a Beltronics V940. A step above entry level, but damn good for the price.

LOL you are... LOL

IMO; the two best out in the market are;

1. Beltronics STi Driver
2. Valentine One

I have had my V1 for over a year. Before that i had a passport but once you get used to the arrows its like a drug. Its like having someone go "the cops in that direction!!" and point to them lol  I would not get another radar detector beside a Valentine V1

x2
Whistler Pro 78

Best low-entry radar detector that can compete against the almighty Valentine One and Escort Radars. I recommend it to everyone who is on a budget and wishes to get a remarkable Radar without having to spend a lot of $. You can Google reviews and tests and you will see what I'm talking about. In one of the reviews the Pro 78 had an even better range detecting cops than the STi or the V1.

No, all of us Va'ers dont have one except for Blinx cuz they're illegal in VA. I've been thinking about getting one just for our yearly road trip down to Myrtle Beach.  The cops down in NC are sneaky.  They'll have a guy standing on top of a bridge that crosses over the highway and he'll shoot the radar down at the traffic on the highway while his buddies are all lined up at the on ramp half way in the woods waiting for his signal.

BTW RJ if the Veil stuff actually works it would do more than block out your plates during meets. Dont forget we've go a good amount of red light cameras around here and more and more speeding cameras are popping up everyday.

Yup, plus like the blue leds that light up.  good visual indicator and kinda funky at night

ive got one and i live in central va.  its only a 40 dollar fine unless your up in dc which then its 300.  its a non moving violation so it doesnt affect your license or your insurance.

Central va is a lil more lenient I believe as fas as cops attitude for pulling you over for dumb shit.  These Fairfax and Prince William boys will get you for anything and everything. So a $40 fine 3 times a month would add up.... I've got pulled over for my legal tint at least 3-4 times in the last 6 months.

ya know i've been tempted to try the veil stuff, but don't know if it's worth the money for it.
