Title: RBC(Retrofitted Boys Club) members check in!
Post by: Abailey4 on April 21, 2008, 04:48:15 PM
Retrofitting OEM HID projectors into OEM headlight housing is the easiest way to get that HID look without blinding others on the road.  This thread is for the main purpose of showing people what options there are available and actually being able to see them.

All questions should be through PM or in the Retrofit/HID lighting Q & A thread

Hmmm.  Here's my current retro set up:

Ghetto Halo housings
TSX projectors
Color modded (2 washers)
Philips D2S 4300k bulbs (not sure about the part #)
Hella Gen4 ballasts
DIY

Pics will come later when I'm not as lazy.  I'll also post my next retro up later when I have more time.

Here's my new set up.

OEM housings (blackhoused)
S2000 projectors
Audi A4 Shrouds
Philips Ultinon D2S 6000k bulbs
Philips Gen3 ballasts
HID "kit" for 9005 high beams with 5000k bulbs
Retrofitted by Larry Wu for Jon (konatriathlon) and then traded to me
I opened them up to fix one of the A4 shrouds that had come loose.  I also blackhoused them while open, but kept the parking light/turn signal reflector chrome.   In addition to that, I also swapped the amber reflectors for clear reflectors.

Here are a few pics of them.  No close up shots or cut off shots yet.

Ryann will be on the list soon.  I just have to finish up his retrofit after I'm done with school.  In a week and a half, I'm going to be taking my MECP license exam and then I can dedicate all my time into perfecting Ryann's headlights.

Then you can work on mine? Good luck on the exam Tim... Hopefully you can turn that license into doing what you love as a career!

Yeah, the exam should be a nail biter.  Kinda funny how I have my first install the day after I get my license.  Good thing it's on an ECM member's ride!!  I already know almost all of the ins and outs of the Accord.  Ryann, you will be very pleased with your retro.  I just want to make sure that they are perfect for you.  Considering the amount of available free time I will be having, your retrofit will be progressing quickly.

Ryan's retros are gonna be hotttt. I heard what he wanted done originally. I dont know if things have changed or not. I dont think Tim's mentioned who or what install he's doing.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I have a question. Has anyone retrofitted without black housing? Is this even possible without them looking bad? I have been thinking about doing this, but I dont want to black house them. I want them to look as oem as possible. Thanks!

I didn't know if it would be harder to make it look clean, as in nice and neat, because I have never seen a set that isn't.

Thanks! Time to start saving. I think those look really nice. Those are A4 shrouds, right? What is a good projector to use? Has anyone tried to do the AFS. I like it a lot. My moms car has it and the lights just follow the road. I doubt it would work with out a lot of serious work. I guess I need to start collecting parts, I need to do a little bit more research though.

Title: Re: RBC(Retrofitted Boys Club) members check in!
Post by: Abailey4 on September 24, 2009, 04:12:17 PM
^Those are true E46 shrouds.  Best projector at least in my opinion is the S2k's. Check out the pics of my old retro's and cutoff pics on the first page. The guy I sold me retro's to is selling some S2k projectors on v6p I think. His screen name is bluesolara.

Title: Re: RBC(Retrofitted Boys Club) members check in!
Post by: wtcii on September 24, 2009, 04:18:25 PM
Im about to go look at those, thanks for the suggestion. *edit* they sold

Ok, so here is my thinking:
Projectors- S2k, depending on how much they cost or TSX because they dont seem to expensive.
Shrouds- E46R shrouds
wiring harness-?
bulbs-?
ballasts-?

Somebody want to help me fill in the blanks?

Title: Re: RBC(Retrofitted Boys Club) members check in!
Post by: timot_one on September 24, 2009, 04:28:30 PM
Those are BMW E46 shrouds I think.  They are definitely not A4 shrouds.  I just pulled the picture from HID Planet.

Good luck with getting any sort of AFS system to work with your car.  I think you're in over your head on that one.  Considering that you'd have to integrate the AFS system from another car from another manufacturer, and then get it to read information from you ECU, it's just not a practical modification.  Those AFS systems factor in all kinds of variables (like speed, how much you're turning, braking) that would be determined by information coming from the ECU.  I'm sure it's possible, but not worth the effort.

As far as your list goes, here's what I would recommend.

Projectors:  S2000 > TSX (but also consider FX35's if you want Bi-Xenon)
Shrouds: whatever floats your boat
Wiring Harness:  custom made and highly suggested (I make them if you're not good at wiring and soldering)
Ballasts: Hella/Philips Gen3 are plentiful
Bulbs: Philips 85122+ D2S

Yeah I figured it would be just about impossible.

Would THIS (http://store.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=117&osCsid=36aebdfb012a7f2998874dc3866abaaa) be a good place to start?

Title: Re: RBC(Retrofitted Boys Club) members check in!

That's not a bad start, but you can source the parts yourself and probably save some money.

I read that some people actually paint the shield where others make some weird glowing mechanism that isn't directly mounted in the projector itself because of heat.
