sorry to tell ya man, but those things are usually crap...
usually in electrical circuits, red is + and black (or other color) is - (or ground)

There should only be 2 conductors, you just separated that shielding or whatever it is. I'd test those on a battery to find out the polarity.

If you was going for leds you could of got them from ebay pre wired for a good price thats how i did my led cup holder heres the link

I have to give a +1 for getting other LEDs. I'd toss those Auto Zone specials and get something that won't be a complete piece of shit and a complete fucking pain to work with.

thanks for the link, ill give those a try.
i do got a question tho. since these are pre-wired, would i be able to hardwire these? like i said im not familiar with how LED's work besides the info Tim gave me about current flowing through one direction.

yes you will be able to hardwire these in they run on 12v so you wont need any resistor just tap into you stock wiring after you have made all your connections

+1, just remember you need to wire these in parallel...if you don't know what that means, I would suggest some more reading up on circuits before you start the project
