Billy, I've gotta side with everyone else.  There really isn't any need to use additives with your oil.  The mechanic's reasoning isn't sound.  As far as your friend's problem, it sounds like the power steering pump, or maybe even a worn belt.

The best way to find out how your engine is wearing is to have a Used Oil Analysis done by Blackstone Labs.

 I'm with Stupid

Three time customer here.  My next oil change interval will be close to 15k miles.  Changing your oil every three months is a waste of $, especially if it's full synthetic.

Replaced Power Steering pump inlet and pressure line O-rings. I Didn't know that there was a TSB for it. Turns out that there is an issue with the inlet O-ring's rubber. The replacements are orange instead of black. Hope this helps with the whining when it's cold.

I changed my oil with Mobil Super 5000 5w30 and a Purolator PureONE oil filter, checked the suspension and brakes, took out the philips screws that hold the rotors in place to save time for when I need to work on the brakes again, rotated the tires, and adjusted the parking brake. (Thanks Tim for putting up with all of my random texts haha)

Now I just have to get new map lights (old ones are burned out), and order a remanufactured Legend GS caliper. I might not do that for awhile though, because the front brakes on my car were changed recently before I had gotten the car, so they still have a lot of pad left.
