Intermittent speaker... shorting? water problems?

Hello!
My passenger side speaker has been intermittent since months after I installed it... I thought maybe it was the crossover since it was not secured down very nicely, however its not the crossover
The speaker was mounted poorly, and I think one of the speaker's own metal bracket was touching the door wall OR the magnet was touching part of the metal door... this is just speculation
However what I can tell you is that on the case there have been metal shavings that formed.... this leads me to think that either it was short circuiting and it wouldn't play. Also I noticed the inside of the door was wet (after a intense rain the day before...) which may be part of the problem, however this speaker has been operating strangely since I put it in.
Ultimately I think it is a mounting problem... When I pulled the speaker and held it in my hand still wired up it played fine. When I first pulled the door panel off it also played fine for a while
Speaker I think is not damaged and therefore I will try to clean off some of the flakes and then remount it
Should I do anything about protecting it from water, by using a baffle or something?
Thanks for all help and advice!

Some rust you can see on the edges (the driver side speaker had similar, but less rust... and has not had issues)

It's probably touching the metal in your door. It wouldn't hurt to get a baffle for your speaker to keep it dry too. Get the baffle and you should be fine. I have some around here somewhere if you want 'em. If you're not in a rush, I can mail them from Canada the next time I'm in the country to save on shipping costs. Where in Ontario are you again?

Well, I reinstalled that speaker with a baffle...
Now it the speaker can intermittently extend on its own like crazy fast like its blowing (will make popping noises or thuds. Looks like whatever happened to it is still going on OR just simply this speaker is dying.
The baffle I used wasn't a rigid one, so its possible that it got soaked. Its also possible that the wire has been shorting... potentially
I haven't pulled the speaker to check or troubleshoot them. I must admit these speakers have been nothing but trouble (left side was already replaced under warranty). Will never buy Infinity again (for car audio)
