Title: key fob battery?
Post by: mnkyman on April 26, 2010, 06:47:48 PM
I was wondering if it's possible to change the battery on the key fob or if it is even worth it compared to purchasing a new one...had my car (and keys) for about 4 years now, and it seems like both keys' range has gone to complete shit, especially over the last year

I heard that the factory puts loctite on the screw, so you're basically screwed (no pun intended) if you strip the head. :P

What?  I'm pretty sure replacing the key fob battery was in the owner's manual..

I'm just going off what I heard. I could be completely wrong. I found the page on how to replace it, though. Page 83 of my 2005 owner's manual.

Quote
To replace the battery: (Battery type: CR1616)
1. Remove the screw at the base of the transmitter with a small Philips-head screwdriver.

2. Separate the transmitter by prying its middle seam with your fingernail.

3. Inside the transmitter, separate the inner cover from the keypad by releasing the two tabs on the cover.

4. Remove the old battery from the back of the inner cover, and note the polarity. Make sure the polarity of the new battery is the same (+ side facing down), then insert it into the back of the cover.

5. Install the parts in reverse order.

You can replace the battery. I opened mine up once just to see the insides lol.

I can take that particular phrase and run in so many directions with it.

thanks...kinda also wanted to discuss if this is a problem with others...if changing the battery actually helped with key fob range...

I'm tempted to change out the battery on mine as well. The car is 5 years old now, and I've been using the same key fob with the original battery ever since. The range is complete shit compared to my friends' cars. I have to be standing about 3-4 feet away from the car in order for the key fob to work.

Edit: haha I just noticed that we both used "complete shit" to describe the range of our key fobs.  :P

I should test mine.  I haven't used my stock key fob to unlock my doors in at least 5 years.

My range is good. I can stand at my front door and lock the car 30 yards across the street.

just wondering if anyone knew the exact battery type? I was going to purchase some before opening up the keys and i'm not within the same city as my car/manual (but have my key with me lol) so I can't just look it up :(

oh didn't see it above, thanks! Ya mine's not dead yet, but the range on my key fob has gone down to ~3 feet, so i figured i change it and see if that helps

I remember with my old ford i did the wire mod on my key fobs antenna that helped with the range the accord internals are different since its like inside a shell after you open it up would of help a bit if  i think since it should be the same concept to improve the range

I actually debated doing it with the accord, picked up the parts but never got around to it. You're right, the accord antennae is a coil within a plastic box in the drivers side door panel. Someone on one of the old websites (g7a, v6p, driveaccord) had taken one apart from a junk yard and had pictures of it all opened up. I think i remember them warning that it was difficult to put back together?...that's why I never got around to doing it lol...anyone remember/have link to those pictures?

update to this, changed my key fob battery and saw no improvement...i think i'm going to try to mod the receiver with an antenna. I had planned to do this some years ago, so I already have the parts laying around. There use to be a thread on the old gen7accord forum where some one had taken apart the control unit in the drivers side door panel....anyone have a link or the pics?

It's gone now Sam.  Are you talking about the switches in the door?

Damn, I was hoping either you or thein had saved the images. Ya I remember a thread a while back with the Driver's door master switch taken apart and a small coil inside which functions as the car's antenna. I was planning on taking a security system's external antenna and wiring that in hoping to extend my range and keep the KP Window Roll up, if that doesn't work, i'll just rip it out and smash it to pieces >:D

You could also take it out and sell it.  I should have time tomorrow to fuck around in the garage.  I'll see if I can get around to pulling mine apart to take pictures.

I didn't know there was still a market for those lol. But ya if you get around to doing that and snapping some pics that would be great! I know you have a fancy security system, so if you can, maybe attach a coil of wire to it and try out your oem key fob to see if anything improves.

Actually, my key fob still works fine the last time I had to use it.  Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to test anything for ya.  When I pulled the motor, I removed the battery and the wiring harness.  I'm not going to be able to put things back together enough to run power to my car right now.

no worries, if you get around to getting pics of the antenna that would be great!
