Title: Clutch and flywheel upgrades?
Post by: MTsixspeed on May 31, 2009, 08:47:22 PM
Are there any options on the j series for an aftermarket single-mass flywheel and maybe a sprung clutch? It would be nice....
I figure Paul would know, but I'm really hoping to get a positive answer here because our drivetrain sucks.

p.s. Orifice valves suck too.

I onlt have a 50% sucess rate with Spec clutches, they glaze real easy. Then of course there is the CM kit, the CM kist is $1300, grabs extreamly well, but has two issues, 1 you need to add a 3mm spacer behind the release arm pivot point to get a good pedal, the second is the ring gear on the flywheel, it is 122 tooth and 12" diameter, ours is 123 tooth and 12.25" diameter, so I end up ginding the welds on a stock one and machining the flywheel to accept it, with out this you will get alot of starter noise and over time destroy the ring gear and starter.

I don't trust spec either...Mike toasted one in 13k miles but that may have been influenced by a bad habit of his....we'll never know.  I would highly recommend the CM kit because their clutches are very nice.  If you can get it in full kevlar you'll probably never replace that clutch again.

Thanks, Paul and Skip. I am still in research mode right now for sure. Hopefully I can get the  promotion at work I'm expecting and I'll have money to throw at this because it seems like it'll be expensive, but worth it.

Most definitely Chris, you'll have a lot of fun with a new clutch.  The real research is in finding a compatible single-mass flywheel and a sprung hub clutch to go with it, you'll REALLY be having fun then!

I put in a new clutch when the had to fix my gears...they had to take it all apart anyway...it was suggested to me by the service manager...little did he know that I wouldn't be spending the $600 or however much it was with/through him...got it for $200...well worth it.  But after 20k, I can already feel it going...I hate it...I think it's due to the goddamn DBW system

Bumping an old thread. Wondering if anyone else here running the clutch masters kit?
I am running the CM FX300 but at 14k miles it has started slipping.

Hate to say it, but that seems to be about normal for those very expensive kits........

I heard of people with 20-30k on those and still going. I'm a conservative driver and I only drive hard maybe once or twice a week if at all.
Do your customers that run J33 and up use stock clutch?

What I have been using is the P2R disc with a new factory pressure plate.

With the dual mass flywheel? I heard from Sean that any upgraded disc with stock pressure plate is a no-no.

IThe disc is made to work with the dual mass and works well, gives extra grab for the added power of the larger engines but is still fairly easy to daily.

How long would you expect this setup to last assuming its driven normal with the occasional gear slamming?

I know others have 60K+ miles on the setup.

Thanks for the feedback.

I may opt for the XLR8 Performance Stage 1 organic disc and 20lb flywheel
