Title: brake and power steering fluids Post by: fabulous010 on February 23, 2009, 10:22:50 AM i want to replace my brake fluid and power steering fluid. i have 85000 k on my car, this is recommended at 84k. what fluids are u guys running? i dont mind upgrading. i am happy with the OEM fluids but if synthetics or anything like that make a noticeable difference then i would upgrade....
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: Abailey4 on February 23, 2009, 10:32:34 AM I'm still running Honda fluids for both even though I've considered swithching up the brake fluid.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: NVA-AV6 on February 23, 2009, 10:59:25 AM You must use Honda (or made for Honda) PS fluid, it has a high silicone content just like Honda AT fluid, putting in anything else will damage the seals and system.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: MyNameIsThien on February 23, 2009, 09:09:11 PM What Paul said. Use only Honda Power Steering fluid or equivalant. As for the brake fluid, you can use any Dot 3 or Dot 4.

Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: timot_one on February 24, 2009, 12:10:43 AM All my fluids are OEM Honda. I would take Paul's advice.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: MyNameIsThien on February 24, 2009, 12:29:27 AM I would stay away from synthetic brake fluid. That is mainly for high performance braking system like BBK or cars pre-equipped with BBK. Also, synthetic brake fluid is use for mainly track use.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: fabulous010 on February 24, 2009, 12:35:09 AM ok kool. thanx guys i was planning on getting OEM fluids, but was just getting second opinion...
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: NVA-AV6 on February 24, 2009, 05:58:30 AM Mixing synthetic fluid and dot3/4 is bad, if you really want to go synthetic (although major overkill for street use), you need to thoughly bleed the entire system, I have seen mixed synt/dot actually sludge up.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: MyNameIsThien on February 24, 2009, 09:31:21 PM Like Dex cool mixed with green coolant.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: Rustywaffle on February 27, 2009, 01:49:09 AM Quote from: "MyNameIsThien" Like Dex cool mixed with green coolant. indeed, i have seen a few customers do this, and i have seen the shit bubble out oem is the best way to go speaking of powersteering fluid... is there any way to bleed the system??? Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: suleman_manji on February 27, 2009, 02:05:09 AM run honda only. especially for brake fluid. the 5.1synthetic stuff is not compatible with the dot3 stuff honda uses.
as for bleeding the power steering... in most cars what i do is just get it on a lift and fill up the resovoir. keep the cap open and turn the wheel. just like the radiators. Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: NVA-AV6 on February 27, 2009, 05:38:14 AM You don't need a lift, but yeah, get the front wheels off the ground and turn the wheel from one stop to the other several times.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: Skippy on February 28, 2009, 09:18:38 AM You don't even really need to lift the front end to "bleed" the system. Turning the wheel lock to lock a few times will clear out any air in the P/S system.
Title: Re: brake and power steering fluids Post by: NVA-AV6 on February 28, 2009, 01:38:38 PM Hey Skip, I have seen a couple times (when a system has really been drain, like a rack replacement) were putting full pressure on the system from turning the wheeel with the full car weight on it has blow out seals, so I have just made it a best practices rule to get the weight off the front wheels when bleeding out the PS system...
