Title: What is a TPS Sensor?
Post by: Nit3h4wk C0uP3 on February 05, 2013, 09:55:11 PM
I did a search on here and couldn't find it, looks like it came out last year. Some one sent it to me in my email on FB. (i can hear you chuckling...)  I have googled it, and I still am pretty confused on what it actually does. Could someone break it down for me?  What does it do?

Throttle position sensor.

Read through this article if you want more info.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throttle_position_sensor (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throttle_position_sensor)

There's also this video.

He does a pretty decent explanation on it.

It basically just measures the position of the butterfly valve.

Denny, I've also renamed your thread from "What is this thing." to "What is a TPS sensor?" Just to make it easier for people to find it in the future.

So a stock engine has one to begin with...this one is just new and improved? and it gives you better fuel efficiency?

You make me so mad, I just want to pinch your cheeks!!

Denny, I don't know why you would need a k-tuned one.  This is where my knowledge ends and some else picks up the baton.

The image in my head was better lol.

I'll do some more reading on this...i have a sneaky suspicion that I don't need it...

I suspect that you don't need it either.

Wait, did you Change it back? LoL. I too love this forum for that same reason.

Tim will probably log on here around 1:30am and detail this out for you, Denny.

All modern engines have throttle position sensors. They do just what the name implies. Hopefully you read that wiki page Nelson linked. Its not a bad read and gives you an idea of what that little fucker does.
As for the K tuned one, it is essentially the same thing but its vibration resistant, encapsulated in billet yada yada. Its meant for the people that flog the ever living piss out of their k series engines i.e. - race cars. It was designed for those people because the OEM TPS was a known weak point as it failed due to the vibrations of those tuned engines. You don't really NEED it but expect it to last just as long as your OEM sensor in everyday conditions. You would need it if you were pushing a good amount of power along with solid engine mounts. Its the vibrations that kill the OEM ones.

See my response above.

First part is a good idea and the second part was explained above.

What Z said.  On built motors and swap cars with stiffer engine mounts, the engine vibrations are a bit harsher than in an untouched car.  The K Tuned V2 TPS is reported to use an OEM quality sensor, that is encased in silicone and inside a billet housing.  I actually have one of these on my car and it's held up pretty good so far.  I've only had it for a few months though.  For your car, something like this isn't really necessary if your OEM one is working fine.

I'm surprised I beat Tim on this one. Point for me.
