Title: Need to buy new bulbs for my retro....Need opinions!
Post by: Accord Euro-R on January 05, 2010, 08:17:02 PM
So my passenger side bulb is about hot pink at this point (massive color shift) and could go any day now.  So I have come to the determination its time for new bulbs, but I am having issues on which to choose.  I have narrowed my options down to 2, and would like some advice.  Keep in mind I AM on a budget.

Option 1: Phillips 85122+ D2S HID bulbs (http://store.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=148&osCsid=e87fefffc87714b5f475d55efa0786ed)
Positives:
 - 4300k color temp
 - 2500+ hour lifetime
 - Used by many high-end manufacturers
 - 1 year warranty through http://www.theretrofitsource.com (http://www.theretrofitsource.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Negatives:
 - $100 for the pair

Option 2: Morimoto 5000k (http://store.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=126&osCsid=e87fefffc87714b5f475d55efa0786ed)/6000k (http://store.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=127&osCsid=e87fefffc87714b5f475d55efa0786ed) HID bulbs
Positives:
 - Higher color temp for a more blue output (keep in mind I have 3-washer color mod on my TSX projectors)
 - Bulbs I currently have, have lasted approx. 3.5 years
 - 1 year manufacturers warranty
 - Half the price of the Phillips bulbs

Negatives:
 - Not a well know brand
 - Could possibly be a poorer quality

Any opinions? Looking to buy sometime within the next week-2 weeks.

Philips 4300k all the way.  Unknown brand with a higher color temp sucks fat cock.  Even when I had the Philips Ultinons (6000k) and swapped to the Philips 85122+, I was glad I did it.  There's a reason why ALL OEM manufacturers use 4300k bulbs in the US.

I don't have any personal experience with the Morimotos but a lot of people on HIDP have some good experience with them. As for the Phillips 85122+, they remain the white color and won't color shift after a couple hundred hours like the 85122 reportedly does. I'll more than likely be switching up my bulbs to Phillips bulbs later on after having my 55w setup for a bit and see if I see any difference.

philips 85122+. they can handle 55W ballasts just fine and prone to coloshifting more then other bulbs so they will mantain their brightness a lot longer (just remember the whiter bulb color get the less lumens it has 6000k ultilions only have 2400 lumens new. 85122+ rated at 3200lumens.
i have philips DL50 in my fogs(fx35) and they are brighter then 85122+ but they cost me $110 a pair 2 years ago and that was a great deal back then, now they are hard to find since they are discontinued and cost around $170 a pair. but they are rated at 5300 lumens and 3900k color temp but ill probably gona be switching to 85122+ soon too. good thing have good amount of bulbs

Thanx guys, it looks like I will shell out the extra $$ for the better bulbs.  I want that nice blue color, but I figure a 700k color difference cant really shake things up that much.

I recommend Osram Xenarc also. I have them on my car and its pretty good. Check out HID planet sometimes you can find the bulbs for 50 shipped with low hr. I have them in my 55w set up and they are pretty clean.

Also Morimoto are Japanese bulbs. They are mostly used in Toyota and Lexus. They are good but philips and osram are much better bulbs.
